Although it has up-scaled a great deal, going from an average neighborhood hardware, to upscale specialty paint/hardware/housewares and gifts it still has the same neighborhood feel and even some of the same staff. Wilder, who works behind the paint counter in the basement, where most of the "serious" hardware is located, has been there ever since I can remember, and always provides one of the best customer service experiences available. He knows his stuff, and is always happy to help. Upstairs, where the gifts and housewares are found, is home to what I can only describe as *the* best selection of gifts for hard to shop for hipsters and grandparents ever... Anyway it seems Montreal doesn't have a lot of places that sells that but saw online that Hogg hardware does since it's part of the Home Hardware group. Went in, ordered it, got a call 2 days later to pick and it wasn't expensive at all. The guys are also really nice but while I was waiting around I saw a ton of cool stuff for the home including soy candles, funky door handles and coat hooks, and stuff you'll never see at Home Depot. I used to buy soy candles at Winners (since soy doesn't produce soot and burns cleanly), but increasingly they don't carry them anymore and instead have "hand-poured" candles ( what the hell is that supposed to mean if it doesn't change the fact that it produces soot?) but now at least I can get some here at a reasonable price. There's a reason why it's located in Westmount and also Nun's Island, it's definitely more bourgeoisie and less blue-collar.

The prices are excellent as well. I am amazed that nobody has written a review yet. Customer service was erratic but it has improved recntly. I really like the choice and the prices they offer. D'abord, le système fonctionne à la minute. On te demande combien tu veux déposer sur ton compte d'impression. J'ai choisi 5 $, pensant que ce serait suffisant. Le temps de chercher mon document, environ 2,50 $ s'est envolé -- à 0,35 $ la minute, sans que je n'aie encore rien imprimé. Puis, au moment d'imprimer, je découvre que l'impression coûte 3 $, mais il ne me reste déjà plus assez de fonds. Il faut donc quitter la session, redéposer de l'argent, puis recommencer le processus. Et le comble : quand j'ai voulu demander de l'aide à un employé, on m'a dit que je devais payer 7 $ pour avoir de l'assistance. Sérieusement ? On paie déjà pour utiliser les machines, et maintenant on doit aussi payer pour que les employés fassent leur travail ? Qui les paie alors ? Nous ou la compagnie ? Honnêtement, c'est le pire service à la clientèle que j'ai vu de ma vie. Aucune flexibilité, aucune compréhension, aucun bon sens dans ce système.

Hard to get to on weekends. Everything is bright clean and well maintained. Many helpful staff with sufficient staffing. I visit them when I need items I can't find elsewhere. It's good to have options.
