Pros: Very skilled barbers with whom you can have a life long relationship. Family friendly. Olde style barber shop feel. Friendly staff. This is definitely the town hangout for retired old farts. Cheap pricing. Drawbacks: Bankers hours. That's good/bad. Good for sustaining staff but hard to get in if you work. Very busy. I waited 90 MINUTES for service!

There are a few types of barber shops in Scranton. There arthem the overly aggressive, hipster…read morebarber shops, "salon style" barber shops, then there is Mackerel's. Mack has done a great job setting the place up to feel like a classic barbershop. You can tell he takes pride in his work. I went there for the first time in May after trying several barbers in the Scranton area and feeling disappointed every time. I needed to find a good barber before my wedding in June and this was my last chance. I've never had a better experience anywhere. I showed Mack a picture my (then) fiance had picked out and he went to work. I've never felt so confident leaving the barber shop before. I didn't even have to send her a picture to know it was perfect. Honestly, I'll never go anywhere else for a cut as long as I'm in NEPA. By far the most comfortable, friendly barber shop in the area.

Anthony's Five Butchers - I'll admit I should've known. I used to get my haircut here in high…read moreschool and they can't help themselves but give every man a high and tight buzz. I was home visiting and badly needed a cut before vacation. I figured it had been 10 years surely things must've changed. I went in, showed how I wore my hair (plenty to brush back) and asked for just a trim with scissors and he agreed to keep it nice and full. After seeing all my hair falling down the drape I even thought "wow do I really have that much hair?" He spins me around and - the butchers strike again. He must've taken more than 2.5 inches off and gave me a high and tight buzz like I'm a sergeant in the military. My head looks like an egg. No more brushing my hair back since it's so short it can only stick straight up. Please learn from my mistakes and stop trusting these guys. (Unless you do buzz cuts then they're fine)

Spring has sprung. Come get a shave and haircut but bring cash!!! Matthew doesn't accept credit…read moreor debit cards. Yes, in small town USA there are still businesses that want to keep giving you quality with out having to over charge you by letting you use credit and debit cards. Matthew runs a clean little shoppe in the middle of a town where most are long time residence or just visiting for the weekend. He will give you a quality treatment for a small town price. This is a barber shop of of course I could not partake in his services. I wasn't looking to have anything cut or trimmer while I was there, however I did apparently have a stray eyebrow that bothered him enough to come at me with scissors. What I can say is I watched as a man who quite obviously had not had a shave or cut for the better part of a year sat in his chair and told me his life story while Matthew went to work on him. He even mentioned this was his first haircut and beard trim in a year while he told me his troubles. Matthew skillfully cut his hair, trimmed his beard, straight razor and hot foam shaved his next and trimmed his strays from where ever needed. Even took a moment to give some other little attentions to things for this older hard working man. Reviews are based on experience and I can honestly say this man had a 5 star experience while he was there. He didn't need a fancy salon that wreaked of hair spray and hair lightening chemicals, what this man needed was a good old fashioned barber shop. When all was said and done he asked what he owed. I nearly fell out of the chair when I heard the price. His experience cost much less then I could have imagined and he left with a beaming smile feeling good about how he looked.
