My…read morebrother has both been a tripper and a leader on SHP's trips, and I've been a leader on two SHP trips as well a few years back. While bike touring is not for every teen, it does appeal to many looking for an adventure and travel on the road. If you're new to bike touring, then going with a group like SHP is the way to go - the leaders are fun and engaging (I think I was!), well-trained mechanics, and the logistics are top notch. As a leader, I had every tool at my disposal: detailed maps for safest routes and points of interest, games and activities, a reasonable budget for food and fun stuff, and a great group of kids. I'm currently a environmental educator with the Appalachian Mountain Club, who run some fairly serious backcountry expeditions with kids, and I'm glad for my experience with SHP.. As a leader I learned a lot and had heaps of fun as well. To parents: be well advised, not every teen will enjoy the somewhat unstructured layouts of the trips - the kids have a lot of voice in where to stop, what to eat, etc. - and the biking is indeed strenuous.
