Review #162 - 2020…read more The boys have been bugging me to find a basketball court since we were in Twain Harte so when we were heading back home, I decided to Yelp a park that has a basketball court and a playground. We showed up at around 1 PM on Sunday, August 23rd, but little did I realize that this park was located in a pretty nice little community. The park was empty when we first showed up so we had the whole place to ourselves. The teenage boys had a great time playing basketball while the younger kids played on the playground. My brother-in-law brought a kid's archery set to let the kids shoot and the open space was perfect for it. A few people showed up a little later and the place didn't feel as empty anymore. The park is very nice and clean. The bathrooms were open, even though there were caution tapes on the playground, which people had already ripped off. It was surprisingly clean for a public park restroom.

In the early 1930s, the townsfolk got together to turn the old site into a community park. It's a lively gathering spot hosting the seasonal farmers market and special events. Local folks can rent the pavilion picnic are and kitchen. I love this park. But there is even more to love about this park after the recent major renovations. The entire park was closed for a few years. It opened up again last summer. It's all spiffed up. The bathrooms are now ADA compliant and the newer paved walkways are as well. The children's play area has a newer modern, safer equipment with bounce play mat and playground chips. The play area is gated which is helpful to corral the kiddos. Even adults get a play area, well it's a covered area with exercise equipment for circuit training. There is a new covered pavilion with picnic tables and bbq grills, this area can be used by reservation only. Right next to the pavilion is a new commercial grade kitchen that can be reserved along with the pavilion. In the other side of the parking lot is a basketball court (which is not new) but the three pickleball court lines are new. Next to the basketball court is an outdoor covered amphitheater stage with a natural grassy sloped lawn. This is where they have live music every Friday evening during the farmers market season. Along the far end of the park are gravel walking paths. The path has a incline and elevated at a higher level than the rest of the park. Along the path are the old mining equipment dating back to the 1800s. Neat. Also there is a memorial from the high school class of 1961 dedicated to local soldiers fallen in the Vietnam War. The machinery and memorial were previous items before the recent renovation. Another memorial is located near the playground. That memorial i no s dedicated to the 17 men that lost their lives in the 1889 Utica mining disaster. An internal avalanche occurred within the mine. As tragic as it was, more men were not hurt due to the fact they were not working full staff at the time due to doing internal structural timber improvements. The old growth sequoia trees in the middle of the grassy lawn area are a site to behold. Classic old growth beauties well maintained providing cool shade. Don't forget to check out the Mark Twain statue on the grassy lawn. If you didn't know, Mark Twain lived in the area in the late 1800s for a brief period and heard bar stories that help him create the short story of the Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The statue is life size and was dedicated in 1944 by the Warner brothers film studio for the film premiere of the Adventures of Mark Twain. In 1957, the statue was vandalized with three frogs removed. Rumor has it that it was removed by a biker (motorcycle) gang. But recently the statue was refurbished, adding back the frogs.

The brick & mortar bathrooms are usually clean-ish. There's always space in the parking lot. They have a concrete ping-pong table, and sometimes people leave paddles and balls to use. I've never seen it patrolled by police, but it feels family friendly without a lot of riffraff hanging about. We enjoy coming here. :)

Here's why: The play structures, bathrooms, water play area, picnics and shade are all right next to eachother. As a mom with young kids, I felt comfortable sitting down and watching them run back and forth from water play to the pirate ship, back to the picnic table to grab a snack, ect. The other park in town with a large splash pad area is large enough that I felt the need to follow my kiddos around. The picnic areas here are way nicer because they have good established shade. And, for potty training parents - the bathrooms are literally right there. Across the large flat field (perfect if you want to play soccer) there was adult exercise equipment, basketball courts, and tennis courts. They even had a handicap swing and one of those cool ones for both baby and an older rider, that face eachother. 10/10 reccomend this park! As we got into early afternoon, the park got super busy and there were lots of rough older kids. We decided that the crowd was getting a little too rough for our littles so we decided it was time to go. I would say that if you have toddlers, morning hours are best before it gets super crowded.

This is a pretty new park even though it's been open a few years but I would say it's a better park…read morethan any other Lathrop park. It's near an elementary school but not as close with a whole grass field between. The pathway that's between the school and park is wide and shady, filled with places to sit, workout and eat. There is a restroom at the park and on the Slate Street side closer to the school. The water splash pads runs continuously during the day in the summer because the water is recycled and filtered. They have city workers that check up the area regularly. I see them in the mornings when I go for a walk sometimes. They added a new pergola type area next to the tennis courts. More tables to enjoy and a bbq pit I believe The parking is pretty much street parking but it seems that a lot of the visitors are from the area so they most likely walk to it. Ice cream trucks, well vans come by and sometimes the school would invite Kona Ice usually on Wednesdays sometimes. Kona would usually be on the Slate Street side FYI

The 5-12 area actually has two play structures, with one a little more challenging than the other. - Plenty of shaded picnic tables and picnic areas - Lots of park bench seating - Babq grills - bathrooms - two tennis courts - A Sand volleyball court, no net up (bring your own) - swings for older kids Downfalls: - the grassy areas are uneven, not a great place for kicking a ball around - bathrooms are older and not the cleanest - no water play or misters - no baby swings Overall, there isn't anything brand new or fancy about this park but it's definitely a solid option. It has way more amenities than most city of Tracy parks. The shade is nice, the neighborhood feels safe, and the play structures are large and interesting.
