It's a very slow river but deep in places so kids can't go in it. We were given a pitch on a field down the end but requsted to move, paid a bit extra and got a pitch next to the river. There's not a massive amount to do on the site, it's more a relaxing break. They have got a large field for tents but when we went it was empty so we could have a good kick about. You are set right in the middle of the countryside so there is alot of walking to be done. In the area is the Sherwood Forest visitor centre where you can marvel at Robin Hoods tree, Newstead Abbey, Mansfield town and more. A nice place to take you van for a break.

I'm talking exposed beams, a crackling fire perhaps even a selection of random copper pans on the wall and the occasional Toby Jug. The Peels Arms in Padfield is just such a place, for those who are not familiar with the area it's just a stone's throw from Glossop town centre. The pub is very discreetly placed in a quiet residential area of the village, there is a car park at the back but it is only small and one assumes gets very quickly full at popular times such as Sunday lunch etc. I would say the building is on the smaller size for a pub, but this adds to the character and charm, I could tell when I was there that the pub is particularly popular with the walking and cycling community for a place to relax and recharge the batteries. You can choose to eat in the main part of the pub or there is an ever so slightly more formal dining area, this is where we were placed which was fine apart from the cosy pub atmosphere is slightly more diluted and the position of our table was opposite and very close the kitchen door, which flung open and closed very often. The menu covers everything you would want and more, I didn't have one of their salads but someone did on the table next to us and it looked extremely tempting. The food is without a doubt home cooked, one of the most refreshing things to see was the Battered Garlic Mushroom, when it arrived it was evident they had literally just been dipped in a fresh batter and deep fried that moment as they were presented in their beautiful golden crunchy coating, each one a tear drop shaped treat, with a garlic dip on the side. Don't get me wrong their food is not Nuevo Cuisine with highly stylised plates, but some effort has been given to presentation. The quality of the produce is good and has that rustic homemade taste that I'd hoped for, other dishes at our table including Chicken Pie, Gammon and Monk Fish, all of which went down very well. The service was friendly and about what I'd expect from a small pub like this, it wasn't the most prompt of service, but it was with a smile and I certainly have no complaints. If you're in the High Peak area and considering your choices for some tasty tradition pub food, then you won't go far wrong with the Peels Arms.

Large traditional and historic pub on the Main Street of Castleton. We stopped for Sunday lunch…read more The rambling interior has a central bar and several different seating areas, including a small seating area at the back. There are flagstone floors and lots of rood panelling. There's an extensive menu with a range of full meals, and hot and cold sandwiches, and a good range of real ales. In our party the £10 Sunday Roast went down very well, with generous portions and huge Yorkshire puddings. The £12 veggie burger (minced mushroom) was very good and also generously portioned and cake with sweet potato chips and coleslaw. For s busy Sunday, service was very quick and friendly. So, not the cheapest venue but good value if you can manage the portions.

My favourite spot in Castleton simply because of their excellent cream teas. This 'pub' does better…read morefood than I've had in son restaurants. It is a bit pricey, but it's good quality, and Castleton is a big tourist trap, so kind of expected. Lovely atmosphere, and big leather sofas and a real fire mean it's very hard not to nod off after your dinner, especially when the resident cat comes and plinks on your lap : )

We visited on a Friday lunchtime and it was packed out, we waited around 15 minutes for a table and that was fine, the staff were all very pleasant and apologised for the wait. The restaurant had quite a busy active vibe and even though it was quite noisy too it was never at odds with holding a conversation. Our orders were taken quickly, focaccia and dip to share to start, spinach and ricotta ravioli in sage butter for mum and the risotto special of the day, which was borlotti bean, pancetta and roast ham, for me. The food arrived quite speedily although it took longer for the drinks to appear and the focaccia was delicious. Spongy bread which gently oozed olive oil topped with a sprinkle of sea salt and a lovely peppery olive oil and balsamic dip to dunk into. Mains also arrived in a short space of time, my risotto was rather good, creamy grains of rice perfectly al dente with a generous mix of salty smoky pancetta, sweet and juicy ham and a soft textured and tasty bean. The ravioli was also good but just a little too thick and chewy to be great, although the filling and sage butter sauce were excellent. We finished with a really good cup of coffee, I chose the rich blend option and it certainly ranks up there with my other favourite brews. All the other diners also seemed to be enjoying their selections, the food looked fantastic, I really must try the chicken escalope soon! All in all a really good option for lunch, I will definitely return to sample more menu options and a browse in the shop is a given!

The food is, obviously, of the highest quality. Excellent ingredients, clean and fresh flavours served with flair & imagination. I'm almost tempted to say that the restaurant is almost made for superlatives - but that would take away from what this place delivers. We went for the Taste Of Britain taster menu, my wife also had the accompanying wines which, judging from the little slurps I had, certainly adds yet another dimension to the food and I'd recommend paying the extra for it. The full menu would require far too much detail, although I will submit a photo - my highlights were The Ravioli of Yukon Gold Potatoes, quail's egg, broad beans & peas White Peak Lamb, lovage & goats curd emulsion (the scallop was a very close second though) Chocolate Tree Trunk, lime sorbet, mint & dehydrated chocolate Also, I have to give a special mention to the cheese trolley - so often restaurants go for wow cheeses and forget the overall combination. This is a trap that Fischers have avoided presenting a well ranged selection that offers plenty of differing choices which still compliment each other. Excellently served by a knowledgable man who took obvious pride in knowing what he presented. It pays attention to every detail. From the initial welcome, the presentation of every dish & glass, even the coffee & petits-fours. The service easily equals that found in the most exclusive dining locations London has to offer. Although far from cheap, you won't feel cheated in any way.

Yummy fish finger sandwiches - just a little too much bread for my taste…read more I've visited a few times following a walk or a run in the peaks. Today was a run and I was starving hungry and ready for a big feed. I was not disappointed - the fish finger sandwich was huge and came with great salt and pepper fries. I did leave some of the granary roll as it was just a bit much for me. The staff are always friendly, and there is an excellent range of beers. There are some good sunny, quiet outdoor seating spots and muddy boots and dogs are welcome. It does have a bit of a chain feel to it, however it's not really an issue as the location, food and beer are great.

Now any visit to the Peak District really should involve a visit to Castleton. Mam Tor (a large…read morehill with an impressive landslide and spectacular views), three caverns (one with a boat ride!) and a castle. The Castle Pub sits.... rather as you'd expect directly at the base of the hill from the actual Castle. Smack in the middle of all the walk routes for the area, a 2 minute walk from the most impressive of the caverns and a 2 minute drive (or a ten minute uphill walk) from Mam Torr. Now as to the pub, parking is costly as the nearest spaces are the "£4 for as many hours" cavern parking, but if you don't mine the walk theres free parking on the outskirts of town. You'll arrive at a pub with a huge amount of outside seating (the thing that sold me to it initially, over it nearest neighbours. When the temperature dipped a bit (as its want to in april) we headed inside. The pub is remarkably intimate despite its size, lots of side rooms warmed by real wood fires and enclosed in old fashioned dark wood beams. The food, delivered swiftly despite the busy bar was spectacular (though perhaps on the pricey side for the nicest options on the menu). The portions were of a good size and everything was delicious. We felt content to lounge by the fire long after our meal without being hurried along. I went away very full and very happy with the quality of service. In fact had i been on more than a day trip i could even have stayed, the pub runs an inn with private lounge areas for residents as well !! The only advice i think i owe it to readers to give is don't go eating there if you want to go climbing after, they will fill you with food and good ale and you won't ever want to leave!
