I had a spa session with massage and facial and it was excellent! I swam every day and used the sauna facilities. The locker room and pool area was kept very clean and dry. The lady attendant was fastidious in keeping the changing room dry and clean. There was a bit of an incident where one of my favorite vintage pieces I sent off to laundry was not returned to us when they dropped off our clean clothes. I had actually been at the entrance to the hotel when the cleaner dropped it off and I verbally acknowledged to her that I could see my laundry because of my vintage piece and she stated they'd be delivered to my room shortly. Front staff sent back an empty hanger amongst our other clean clothes and had lost it. We found it on the floor amongst boxes behind the reception desk. They returned my item, and apologized personally. Not a big deal and glad it was resolved.

The downside of this hotel is the aggressive pricing for wedding packages, meaning that there are many wedding parties going on. I counted six in two days, which brings a lot of drunkards to the hotel, which does not help if you're seeking a quite place to relax. Will I ever get back to this hotel, no.

The good news is that the beer is still top quality, albeit pricey (£3.50 a pint), and the roaring open fire was very welcome on a grungy day like today. Sadly though, the interior designers have been hard at work, and turned this place into a somewhat sterile experience with the emphasis more on food (expensive) and coffee than beer. I guess a lot of people will love this restaurpub, but to me it's mock tudor, and not the real thing. It's the sort of pub that foreign tourists go in because the real pubs look a bit too intimidating. The stone flags remain, but the soul has gone. Having said all that, and call me a hypocrite if you want, I'd probably go here again at some point as the beer was good.....but not before I'd been to a few other pubs in the area first.

The room had a reasonable size TV and free wifi is an essential these days. They have an arrangement with the NCP car park round the corner for discounted rates. The staff were very helpful, in the evening I needed directions to get to This and That (you can read my review here on Yelp) and the lady printed out a map for me to follow. The duty manager in the morning ensured a smooth checkout and served the aforementioned breakfast beautifully. The only thing I would improve is to empower the staff more like in the best hotels, when I arrived after a long drive from London there was a problem with my reservation so I was hanging around in the lobby for half an hour while this was sorted when all I wanted to do was freshen up. When this has happened to me previously receptionists have said just go up to the room and relax while we get this sorted.

Beds are hard, pillows are thin, duvet is really thin - especially for winter months. There's always a strange off smell in every room I've ever stayed in. I ate once in the restaurant downstairs - it made me feel sick - really not nice at all, stale and microwaved overpriced food. Breakfast buffet is decent size, but again scrambled eggs are hard chewy and flavourless, sausages taste cheap, tomatoes are rock hard. The area itself isn't the nicest in Manchester. I've always got a taxi from the train station, but I've seen a bus stop nearby. The only pluses are the customer service, staff are always attentive and friendly - and the water heat and pressure in the shower is good. Make sure to bring all your toiletries, tooth brush and paste too as there's no perks in the room & there's no nearby shops.
