I can sum this business up in one word: McDojo. I'm honestly sad because I wanted to like this…read moreplace, not for myself but for my kids. Unfortunately instead of being a place of learning, like my husband experienced taking karate as a child here in Durant, it's nothing more than an expensive belt factory. I expected a monthly fee, not a problem. What is a problem is having children test for their next belt within two weeks ($60 per test) of even starting. They haven't even learned anything worth testing for in literally 3 hours of overall practice time. And then to be told to expect them to test every two months if not more..that's not how this works. There is no set time that they should be ready to test. If you go to a class and look around you will see tons of children running around with different colored belts. Very young children. And there are quite a few with black belts. If that isn't the biggest indication that this is a McDojo, I don't know what is. So basically unless you have money to blow so that your kids can run around and have fun, and a lot of closet space for their spiffy colorful belts, I'd skip this place.

The kids' class is so awesome and is taught by two world class Olympic athletes. The instructors of each class progress their student based on the student's individual skill level. The adult and parents classes are filled with committed students and there is a friendly atmosphere that makes the classes very fun and motivating. Also, this dojo produces some highly skilled competition athletes. Very impressive!

I don't feel like I am someone paying to have my child take a class, I feel as though I am part of a family with Mr and Mrs. Perez and even some of the other parents. Being a single mom of an extremely high maintenance child, I can only express that Karate has given him a different kind of confidence and a strong attitude all because of what goes on in a 45 min class that remains consistent. What's more pathetic is at the end of the low ball classes($49) they give you child a "belt". They they charge you for "registration" fee. We tried this for a month, after the 1st month, after the child gets used to the classes (which seems to be over crowded) they hit you with all that I mentioned above. However, after one class we were convinced this was the place for us. But, I wanted to give it some time to make sure it was a fair and honest review. Here is the scope: Senseis Lee and Matt are incredible and passionate about their instruction which shows in every aspect of their teaching style. Not only are my children stepping up their game and performing strongly but one can see that the children in their class feel a connection to the art as presented by the instructors and are progressing at a solid pace. The instructor-student dynamic is very engaging, and all students regardless of ability are treated with an equal amount of compassion, discipline, and respect which results in every class being a fun and serious karate training season that my girls look forward to attending. Classes are unlimited and scheduled throughout the week which is nice considering our schedule and +20 miles we must drive each way to attend (for us it is worth it). There are no high-pressure sales tactics or crazy 6 + month commitments like some other place (we have looked at a few). Bottom line if you are considering Karate or any martial art for that matter seriously take a look at this studio. It is a great experience on every level!
