My wife and I are just back from a four day stay at the Rodmay Hotel, in Powell River, BC. We stayed in the "excecutive suite", at a cost of $138 plus taxes/fees. This is approximately 50% more than the typical going rate in town. Issues we found:
1. Apart from the first day we arrived, there was no hot water, for the duration of our stay. After running the water for over 5 minutes, it would get slightly warmer than cold, that is all.
On the third day we "attempted" to talk with two women in the main office who we think were owners, or owners rep's. Only one of them had a marginal grasp of English, spent most of the time translating what we said to the other. They said they were sorry, would check into it, but nothing happened.
When checking out we told (English speaking) staff about the lack of hot water, and they said something about "one of the boilers being out".
I'm basically echoing Jess M's experience, perhaps the "boiler has been out" since 2011, lol.
2. The suite was represented as having a kitchenette. That turned out to be a table in one room with a bar fridge, toaster, kettle, toaster, microwave and Mr. Coffee. No sink or range. Upon arrival all appliances, including the fridge, were unplugged.
3. Most of the windows are painted or nailed shut. A few could be worked open, with broken latches. Window ledges in places were extremely dirty. There were some cracked panes and one quite broken, taped up, with pieces missing.
When we arrived staff requested payment up-front, which we did. Perhaps due to guests getting so disillusioned, leaving early? Anyway, it was not completely terrible, the place has a history, ambience, and at the third day they came through, removed garbage, tidied and supplied fresh towels.
Still, I would NOT go back there, feel we were cheated/overcharged for what we went through. read more
