When you pay $2 for a McDonald's Cheeseburger, don't a A5 Wagyu 8oz burger... When you pay $2000 for an used 1999 Mustang, don't expect a Porsche 911 Turbo... When you pay $90 for a hotel room(like I did) in the very expensive San Francisco Bay Area, don't expect the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton... I was traveling solo and that I only needed a room for 9-10 hours, I made a last minute decision to save $100 and switch from the Hawthorne Suites(very nice!) to this very budget situation. PROS: -Cheap, No bugs, cheap, beds were actually decent, cheap, hot water, free parking, cheap, good location to walk to eateries, bars and shops, cheap, fridge, cheap, microwave, cheap, very safe neighborhood(all of Alameda?), and did I mention its cheap? CONS: -Run down, very old, needs lot of new paint, needs a deep clean, needs to bedding(IKEA is very close by?), needs a little bit of artwork, there is a coffee machine but I didn't dare risk using it, I'll highly likely never stay here again, but would do so if I was in a lower income bracket. As I'm writing this review along with the other 49 reviews, I see the current rating at Roadway is 1.6 / 5. But that is high, most of the 37 one star reviews have made the same comment that they would leave a zero = O if they could. It's all the same garbage about the rude staff at the check in desk and dirty stinky stained smoke smelling rooms. Here are some of the quotes from Hotels.com who I booked through. "They're sticking with their policy and won't issue a refund." "We're sorry you've had a frustrating experience, and that we can't help more in this case." What you can do for me and other travelers, is tell Roadway you will no be doing business with them any more to protect the people paying your salaries by spending their dollars with you. Then suggest to your patrons to go to the competitors who do serve the customers well. In time this will put the Roadways out of business as it should be. read more

There needs to be a zero rating. The woman at the front desk was rude when I checked in only speaking to take my credit card. The carpet needs work and there was a terrible smell in the lobby as well. The room was older, but cute. I liked the older furniture. The room had this funky smell but I'm sure it was just the spray. When I tried to open the window it would not open. I finally got it open and told them not to send maintenance. Then I left to find food. When I get back to my room and sit on the bed this foul stench of cigarettes comes wafting up. I got up and sat down again, more smoke smell. I called the front desk to ask for another room and was told there were no more available rooms. After asking him what I was supposed to do since I wasnt going to sleep on this bed, he sends up his cleaning lady. Shes no lady. She comes up with two cans of spray to spray the bed. Shes actually going to spray the sheets! I refuse and tell her she needs to spray the mattress and change everything on the bed. She still wants to spray. I tell her to sit on the bed and she will smell it. She just looks at me. Why wont she sit on the bed? It hasn't been used, it should be clean, she still refuses. She says I can stay or I can leave, they are completely booked for the night. Really? The place is completely void of cars. She says to me "reservations sweetheart" and walks away. I push the door shut and it slammed shut. Now shes hollering about how I need to leave for slamming the door. Shes going to call the police. Next the guy at the front desk calls and tells me I need to leave, he going to call the police. I tell him to go ahead and call. Of course, they never arrived. I go to get my FULL refund and the guy just wants to argue. Literally, he just keeps talking. I finally tell him that if he shuts up then we have nothing else to say. He threatens to call the police again. I tell him to go ahead...I'll wait. He does nothing. Bottom line, this NON-SMOKING motel is a smoke filled circus. The bed smelled like smoke. There were people walking in front of my room smoking. The cigarette cistern was two doors down from my room. Even though ALL the rooms have a no smoking placard on the doors. If I could give it zero I would. Very dirty, unkept, smelled like cigarettes even though it was non smoking. Carpet was dirty and stained and coming off the edges that joined it to the linoleum in the kitchen. Bathtub was gross luckily we always use sandals in hotels to shower and walk around. Found a used rag on top of the showers curtain rod which was disgusting. Kitchen area looked ok but we didn't dare use anything. Felt very unsafe in the area, had neighboring people with doors open drinking and smoking. Do not recommend staying here. Spend an extra 15-20 a night and go somewhere else. read more

Decide to give this a try since a few of my friends lived here many years ago, but man this was a bad decision. People were loud at midnight and smoking weed... They were speaking spanish - middle/old age couple. Indian lady rep was mad rude. The room was broken last week and you still haven't gotten it fixed... Got mad when we asked for another room because they gave us a really ugly one after we can't get in our room, as the door was broken. What do you expect from a cheap hotel? I guess if I expected more then I'd pay more somewhere else. Dirty floors, suspect stains all over the place, weird odor, and gross bed covering. It kind of had a Breaking Bad vibe going on. Tips on what to bring it your staying here, slippers, disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, extra layer of clothing if you intend on sleeping on their sheets, and maybe some gloves. We made very last minute plans to visit San Francisco and were not willing to pay last minute prices for San Francisco hotels so we started casting a wider net. The price was right at this hotel so we booked without reading the reviews. And I'm so glad we did. We were prepared for gross smells and scary clientele and just muscling through a couple unpleasant nights. But when we arrived the room we were given had been recently remodeled, it smelled great, that thing almost qualified as beautiful. The carpet had been ripped out and replaced by spotless, fake wood flooring. The bathroom was nicer than mine at home. The bed was comfortable. I was amazed. The outside and the check-in area don't look like much but room #121 is awesome. read more

I stopped staying at this hotel years ago because it was getting so run down. I booked a reservation thinking it had to be better because they must have updated it by now. WRONG! I would say it's like sleeping in a cave but a cave would actually be a better experience. The walls are dirty, bed saggy, parking terrible, WiFi slow, room noisy, and the carpets are dank... Dank like they have 30 years of dirt pressed into the. I was afraid to let my bare feet touch the ground. I was afraid to touch the wall at the top of the bed. It looks like it's been pelted by a booger machine gun. I had to sit in the entry way next to the door to get the WiFi working. It's the kind of cheap crappy hotel you see in the movies when people are broke and on the run from the law. Except this motel is so scummy they would probably turn themselves in. This place deserves no rating at all. I have gone there a few times after work because I didn't feel like the drive home to Fairfeild and each time the towels were nasty and dirty. The bedding was dirty and stinky, the used to be yellow bed skirt was black, the floors were not mopped and had spills from previous guests. They look like they had started a makeover and stopped. Not to mention the the type of guest they have. This place looks like a rooming house for meth heads. They should shut down and remodel. Pissed customer!!!! If you chose to stay there bring some Lysol and cleaner and your own towels. read more

We checked into the Rodeway Inn, which we booked directly through CHOICE Privileges and when we went to our room, immediately noticed a stench odor upon opening the door! Like carpet cleaning chemical? Terrible place!! DO NOT COME HERE!! The room was filthy! I also had to have the towels changed out after noticing brown streaks on one of them! The noise was unbearable ~ garbage truck emptied the container(s) at 5:30am and there was noise most of the night either from the questionable looking clientele staying in some of the other rooms. There was traffic in and out of some of the other rooms all night long making me think . . . Parking was extremely tight and some of the people watching us park made me feel very worried about the security of rental car. The cooks and/or employees of the restaurant next door were taking their smoking breaks directly below our room until after midnight. After asking for the "lowest price possible" with CHOICE Privilege, I was offered $102 per night final price (overseas US Army veteran), the man in front of me paid only $90 FINAL per night! I won't recommend this hotel or the CHOICE Privilege program to anybody! read more

Reviewer # 19 Great location only minutes from the Bay Bridge. This place is somewhat run down and old, but well maintained. I had a good stay here. The owners allowed the pool to be open late for us (super late) so that we could swim when we got back from the city. It only took 11 minutes to get into San Francisco-- the next day much longer with traffic-- which was unheard of. Hotels are so expensive in the city and much smaller. The room wasn't anything special but hey it was clean and there were no bed bugs! Quick and easy check in-- no fuss! I will def stay here again if I am going to the city and don't want to stay in the city. read more

The penultimate place to stay...The airconditioner that was turned on at an adjoining room sounded like five sinks draining at the same time. No headboard for the bed was creepy because I was up against the wall. No reading lamp near the bed. I spilled water on the floor near the microwave and when I dried it up with a nanpkin, the napkin was black from the floor! I tried other parts of the floor and some were cleaner. I think the sheets might have been clean. Hard to tell if freshly laundered. Well, there was a door that was lockable, the shower worked and the toilet flushed. read more

Paid over $80/night to stay here last year and it was a nightmare. Nearly the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, but I think that that one in Cortez, CO with meth or crack junkies in the parking lot was worse. Since this is the Bay Area, everyone at this hotel was just high on dope. And they seemed to be selling it, too. The carpet was torn and filthy, the bed had hairs in it, the door lock did NOT seem to be secure AT ALL, and the furniture was beaten to hell. I really don't want to know what goes on here besides selling some weed (seemed to be a regular spot). I called Choice Hotels (made the reservation through them) and luckily got the rest of my stay refunded, so I only stayed one night out of the planned 3 here. Thank God, too, because there was a Raiders game the day I checked out and things were going downhill fast. Really terrible experience. read more

The room was meh but the customer service was awful! I had emergency plans that had changed within an hour or two of booking so I didn't need the room anymore but of course this place got their money already and they REFUSED to give me any sort of refund! The front desk guy was rude and condescending, he didn't try to work with me whatsoever and I left immediately. Had to push my car to their parking lot due to breakdown which I thought was the hotel's. I asked if I can parking overnite and get it tow tomorrow. The Indian lady wants to charge $10 even though the space is shared with a restaurant. I walked out fuming and swear even if I have to push a car 1 mile I won't give her a dime. The restaurant allows me to park overnite so the Indian lady had to let me park. Why would she charge people in trouble. Pros:. Near San Francisco and Bay Area attractions at a more reasonable price. The room was fine: microwave, mini-fridge, beds, and bathroom were all good. Shampoos, etc are included. Front desk guy was super friendly. Peet's coffee in the same parking lot, Crown Memorial State Park and beach area are nearby, as is a cute downtown area and shopping (retail + groceries). Cons:. You can literally hear everything anyone says in your part of the hotel. That made it really difficult to sleep. If you have amazing ear plugs and sleeping pills, don't write off this place. If you don't or need quiet, go elsewhere. Since my use of hotels are for sleeping, I gave it 2 stars. read more

There wasn't a person at the counter to check us in. We had to wait a long time. Not enough towels in the room. When we tried to ask for extra , the staff refused. I had to fight to get extra towels. The room smelled horrible. It didn't seem clean. Walls dirty. Asked for an iron and was told there was only ONE iron for the entire motel. The phone in the room didn't work. Staff was not pleasant. The rooms pictured are the BEST condition ones, not the regular rooms. Upon checking in we found our room was nothing like those pictured. In the time it took for the wife to complain at the front desk,I saw two Oakland PD Officers respond to the room below me. Now I have no way of knowing why they were here, but who cares. The room next door smells of skunk weed as a mentality ill person walks around yelling in the parking lot. This is the environment of the location. Every sound is heard from the room above, every voice outside too. Large gap under door allows the morning light in, long before you feel like waking up. I thought I was getting a deal. I should've paid more, period! We spend a lot of time in Vegas so we know a good hotel when we see one, this ain't it! Not even close. I can't imagine how anybody can suggest this place is nice, fair or even ok. We had our room changed, it's passable but just so. NEVER AGAIN! I am almost ashamed to admit that I have stayed at this substandard Bollywood-run motel but I consider it my obligation to warn others to stay away! I am currently in the process of relocating from the Central Valley to the Bay Area and I needed a location with public transit access for my commute (work) to SF.I chose Alameda because it is mostly residential instead of Downtown Oakland. I am a Choice Hotels Privileges member and this Rodeway Inn & Suites was a location that was provided to me. From what I gather, it was formerly a Days Inn and is long away from what it once was. The lobby is filthy and worn and the rooms are equally worn. I was quoted a corporate contracted rate but management tried to charge me a $89.00 per day which is well above what they should be entitled to (more like $45.00 per day). The bath tub had a mat in it that exposed a rubbery white sludge underneath as I showered, the bedding had holes and the linens were badly stained. The icing on the cake, though, came on the morning of Wednesday 4/ 4 @4:30am when I heard a few cars speeding in the parking lot and quickly stop. Then, the police began banging on the door of the room next to mine ( I stayed in #109 on the ground level) while yelling "Open the door, it's the police". I was terrified and stayed awake because I didn't know if I was going to need to escape flying bullets. Surprisingly (really not so surprising), the manager tried to tell me that the police were called for a medical emergency but when I asked why an ambulance didn't appear he appeared as though he was unable to come up with a more reasonable lie. Getting the window of my rental car broken last night was a downside, but that might have happened elsewhere in Oakland or even in Rossville or Sacramento, though I did not notice it until I was filling the gas tank this morning. 3 stars because it is a Rodeway with bare floors, but in comparsion to other hotels at the price point it is a lot closer to 5. read more

Don't stay here. We drive from Los Angeles to the hotel and were exhausted from the drive we arrived at the hotel at 1 pm but were not allowed to check in until 3 pm. I have never experienced this. In other hotels I have been able to check in early but not here. The manager said the room was not clean and ready but I saw no one cleaning the rooms. We waited until 3:01 pm to check in. DO NOT STAY HERE! This is one of the worst places i have ever stayed! Dirty and horrible service we had a reservation for a non smoking room which had a plastic covering the smoke detector and smelled like cigarettes very strong our eyes were burning, the bed, the pillows were filthy and the bathroom had mold and was disgusting, there was a trash bin next to room that smelled nasty. THE MANAGEMENT were extremely rude and just kept saying "that is the best room we have" he would interrupt me and was acting like it was our fault very very rude. I would think that hotels.com would have some standards and vet this kind of place it should not be operational under these conditions and with basically no customer service. read more

This is one of the reasons I joined Yelp. I think this may be my worst experience and I stay out of town at least 100 nights per year. Put it this way, I slept in my clothes and didn't shower in the AM. In spite of my request to leave and get my money back before I touched the bed I was told the charge had been made and he couldn't reverse it since it was past the first ten minutes. Later when I went to get an iron (that's right, don't expect an iron in your room), I was told I needed to leave a ten dollar deposit. No chance. So don't stay here and I am reminded now that I need to call Choice Hotels to tell them about this. I am a regular with them. This place is a discredit to their name. This was about late July. Decent enough room , albeit pretty basic but at least shampoo , coffee maker and hairdryer were there . And it was clean . It was not worth the price of the room though for essentially a 2 Star Hotel . Slightly tatty feel about it especially at reception and the drinks and ice vending machine wasn't working . At least they catered for smokers and non smokers with the rooms and luckily there was a Peets Coffee Shop across the car park which do excellent coffee . The real complaint I had was the outrageous and incompetent behaviour of the new night staff boy when I went back to stay in the hotel at the end of my trip as I'd stayed there at the beginning too . I'd got off a 6 hour flight from South Carolina to San Francisco plus uber to Hotel , the night staff boy who later the manager told me was 'new ' , charged me twice off my card , refunded me , then as it takes a few days to go back on card I didn't have the credit to book in and he wouldn't let me in !! Threatened me with the police !! A guest !! By this time , I was in floods of tears , frightened as to where I could stay ( I was travelling alone ) and exhausted . I phoned a friend who intervened and paid and the next day the embarrassed manager gave me the rest of the stay discounted and apologised for his new co worker who should've been fired . Dreadful . Manager was nice though and sorted it out by reversing transaction with my bank on the phone , puzzled as to why this boy had cocked uk transaction .
