Want to experience the 4000+ years of Chinese martial arts combined with the best of modern…read moretraining techniques? If you're tired of all the fluff and lack of heart at other martial arts schools in the area, then " just directa your feetza" to the Shao Long Academy. Be respectful; Shifu Lefler can spin kick your head sideways before you can quote your favorite Van Damme film. Seriously though, you will learn the finest traditional Chinese martial arts techniques combined with contemporary conditioning drills to strengthen your mind and body while you become the ultimate Gongfu warrior. My daughter has been attending this academy for several months and there has been a marked improvement in her self-esteem, confidence, and general fitness. The fortitude required to teach others is a skill not many possess, and the progress I've seen in Shifu Lefler's students is a reflection of his devotion to his craft. For Shifu Lefler, this isn't just a hobby - it's a way of life.

It was a long-shot but we figured why not try something different for her. The instructor/owner, Itzak, is super nice and kept his students engaged, disciplined but still having fun. The practices are traditional and it's not hard for my child to follow. The pricing is fair and still within our budget. Along with virtual lessons, he actually has a Tai Chi app as well and I actually feel a little sore after trying it. Great options during this hard year especially. The studio is really clean and organized. The owner follows the guidelines for Covid-precautions and safety measures so peace of mind is there. The mats don't smell which is what I usually always smell when I go into other studios/gyms. That's a plus for me. The location was not hard to find, convenient and I didn't have any issues with parking. Only con is that I like to go eat the seafood place next door.

My kids have made great friends here and love the program. They do a fabulous job of building a community within the Westwind program, bringing all 3 locations together for fun events, year round. We absolutely adore Ms Ryan and Mr Wright. I would highly recommend the program for any family looking for an extracurricular that Instills discipline, routine, and physical fitness in a fun package!

Can I take a minute to give a big shoutout to my dojo?!?!?!?! I've been studying here at WestWind…read morefor the past 6.5 years now, and little did I know how much it would change my life! I came into contact with the studio at the "What Women Want" Expo in April of 2017, and Mr. K, our head instructor, was giving out VIP cards with the promo to try a month of Karate free for Women's month (May) when you buy a gi. I thought I'd try it for just the month, and a month got me interested enough to try it for a year. I honestly didn't think I'd stay past a year, and here I am... 6.5 years later and looking to earn my black belt within the next few months or so (fingers crossed). In this time, I've grown mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. To say this dojo has been life changing is an understatement for me, as I am not the same person who started 6.5 years ago. I have gained so much confidence in myself as a person, and have learned to let go of a lot of the unnecessary junk that weighs someone down in the day to day. I've also learned curriculum, which is broken down in each rank, continue to work on katas, and have been creating my own techniques, as required in the higher ranks. WestWind also has an annual Challenge (inter-school tournament) that challenges one to step outside their comfort zone and try something new or overcome the fear of performing in front of others. Our school is broken down into Early & Basic skills (ages 3-6 y/o) and Karate 7+ yo. It's great getting to learn alongside children and adults. You learn a great deal of control in the process. WWKS also has weapons disarm seminars as well as other technique seminars throughout the year to help one prepare themselves. I can't say enough good things about the teaching and instructors. They really take the time to help you understand the curriculum and your movements, and they care about you personally. They want to see you succeed. It's a big family with everyone working together to reach their goals and learn in the process. Thank you, WestWind!!!!

Monk Wise will charge you maintenance fees on top of your tuition. If you cancel your membership, you still have to pay two months' worth of tuition (supposedly this has been changed to 30 days, but in all our negotiations to end our contract, we never once saw a new contract or signed it, even when we were still regularly attending the school). You're charged to advance, you're charged to participate in extra activities, you're charged to put your account on hold . . . you're even charged to attend a potluck. Monk Wise works off the idea that you pay a fee and then attend as many classes as you want. But if you have a schedule that makes it hard to come in often, or, say, children, this model is not ideal. We paid extra to receive private lessons, only to never receive private lessons or a contract for the adjusted payment. But, of course, we got $118 taken out of our account regularly, every *two weeks*. Attempts to discuss payments with the owner were either met with very salesman-like runarounds or complete silence. (We were even charged for two weeks' of lessons when the studio was closed for Christmas break, which is illegal. Like I said, you will be nickeled and dimed to the point of insanity.) If you're interested in martial arts, there are much better places to enroll. Learn from my mistakes and go somewhere else. *Their website says they have no contracts. This is a lie.

For camp, the kids learn some jiu jitsu techniques but also fun activities like dodgeball and water games, to get kids active and moving. The owner, Carlos leads the kids camp. Good mix of boys and girls in the class. My girls enjoyed coming all week and now want to sign up for regular classes. All happy kids there! The owner of First BJJ has amazing experience and credentials; he has several that are worth looking into like being a 3x world champion in BJJ but my favorite story was learning how the ruler of the United Arab Emirates invited Carlos to come to UAE to teach the country BJJ and worked in Abu Dhabi for 9 years. I asked Carlos if he still keeps in touch with the royal family, "nope", what?! lol. We in Utah are very lucky to have Carlos and his gym here. Has been running 10 yrs and counting! It is a well run studio and SUPER CLEAN. They always disinfect the mats, so important since students are in close contact with people on the mats every class. Recommend this place if you want to become a proper BJJ competitor or learn for the joy of the martial art.
