This is truly a phenomenal museum embracing all forms of transportation throughout North Carolina's…read morehistory. There are tributes to the now-defunct Piedmont Airlines, old automobiles, wagon travel of the 1800s, and the obvious nod to trains. But the fact that they acquired a massive railroad building dating to 1924, active tracks that provide visitors rides on a refurbished train, and that they renovated an 1898 train depot as a meeting point for train rides really takes this museum to a five-star level! You can easily burn two hours here pursuing the seemingly endless displays. If you want to know what to look for, here are some of the most interesting tidbits on a sprawling property filled with gems. The incredible collection of very old wagons in Building B is impressive, as is the old Piedmont plane nearby, the school bus from 1940 with long benches instead of seats, and the fire truck dating to 1917! Walking deep into the complex into the farthest reaches of the roundhouse (building F), you can explore inside an old mail train and a U.S. Army medical train. Along the way, you'll see behind the scenes where employees are actively repairing trains in the workshop. But don't miss the last train car before the workshop, a black car dating to 1919 in remarkable condition. And even though Building D was off limits when I visited, just behold the exterior of this structure dating to 1896, the oldest in the entire complex!

It is a massive museum, the grounds sprawling, so many massive buildings to explore! I particularly loved the train lights and gates you can test out when walking up. I seriously want to bring the grandkids here soon! We explored, rode the train, explored some more and grabbed a couple of train souvenirs for the kids!
