Dropped by on a whim this week while having a look around Old Town Harrisonburg. Halcyon Games…read moreoccupies a smaller space but really excels in stocking a large variety of quality video game titles for all kinds of systems. I wound up talking with the owner for about 15 minutes and they were really knowledgeable and friendly, like genuinely excited to talk to you about different games and help you find what you're looking for. They stock everything from Atari up through the latest Nintendo Switch and Playstation games and have a nice selection of complete-in-box games if you are into that. The prices are pretty fair; I would say on-par or sometimes marginally better than what you'll see online. But to me, the real advantage is you can see everything in person and take something home same-day rather than waiting for it to ship from somewhere else! On this trip I picked up some great titles for the Nintendo Wii and n64. Looking forward to coming back once I've gotten through those!

I have now been to this location quite a few times. And been to numerous video game stores…read morethroughout Virginia. The store itself it's incredible. The selection will waver (as all vintage game stores do). But what they do have is extreme quality. They may be picky on what they will take on trade in but I value that as someone who likes to see some of the rarer items for sale. I truly don't know how they make the business work. You can go in here and look at there prices and a vast majority of the time it's cheaper than eBay. No need to price check/match. Plus you get there honesty that the games have been tested. The owners are some of the friendliest I have met in all of my reviews. Down to earth, nice, and willing to hold a conversation with you on about anything. A true gem of a business and a place I greatly admire. Would definitely recommend.

My wife found this awesome little hobby shop last night while hanging out with a couple of friends, and when she came home and told me about it, we ended up going back together the next day. I'm into all things nerdy, especially anime and GUNPLA, so I grabbed an SD model kit and a Thousand Sunny Bandai kit from One Piece. They've also got individual actual Pokémon, One Piece, Magic decks, and individual cards in binders for sale (at least for Pokémon, I'm unsure of the other cards games.) They had some Anime models, Manga, a bunch of stickers, different types of dice (for tabletop gaming), plushies, some older video game stuff, and I think there were Warhammer model kits. It's a small local shop, so prices are a little bit higher than what you'd see at big box stores. BUT you're supporting a local business, and that's always really worth it. There are some game rooms in the back where people can play tabletop stuff like board games or Dungeons & Dragons. They've got a bathroom (I didn't check it out), plus a little section with snacks and sodas to indulge if you get hungry while you're there playing. Big shoutout to the guy behind the counter. He was super cool to my wife and her friends last night, and even more so when we came back today. I watched him today helping other customers too. My only guess is they saw that the secondary market exploded and the price doubled so they cancelled my order so they can sell it for more at inflated prices. I'm shocked at how much space they have for their games because it's almost like walking into a warehouse full of games, anime figurines, and merch. Everything out in the open games are shrink wrapped and it does help keep that minty fresh condition, I'm sure you don't want to see dust on items you want to buy. The back section used to be an open spot where they would host events. The Gamers Exchange was what I looked forward to the most when going here. Local sellers sold games and it brought a sense of community. There's now more of their section to test and repair consoles so I suppose it's for the better but those were the days.. Apart from all the cool video games to check out I have a few complaints. Like many, checking out here takes too long and I wonder if it's just something where their point of sales is just outdated. Even then, there's only one person just checking out people.. why not have more than one register at a time? There's the option to use WiFi but I could never get it to work. Although there are computers around to look up items that you want to check the price on, it can be a tad slow sometimes. I do like the convenience of checking out what's in stock but sometimes that's not always the case. I remember a few times asking someone that worked there if they had a game, they could not find the game at all and that put a damper on my visit. If I can't see it in person in store then most likely it's probably bought online. Otherwise I find this store to be such a joy to visit. While I think the prices are kinda high, I don't think any game store in the area could really compute. They have games ranging from NES - Recent and that's pretty impressive alone. It's so cool to visit a store that caters to anime and video games enthusiasts.

The store itself is very unorganized, and the online inventory doesn't seem to accurately reflect what is actually available in the store, which makes it frustrating if you're coming in looking for something specific. The checkout experience was especially frustrating. The clerk took an unusually long time to complete a simple transaction, and it became pretty apparent that he was distracted or doing something else. After standing there waiting, I finally asked if everything was okay, and coincidentally my transaction was completed almost immediately afterward. I understand that stores get busy and employees have other things to handle, but basic communication and attentiveness go a long way. This could be a great place for people who enjoy browsing and collecting games, but unfortunately the poor customer service, disorganization, and inaccurate online inventory make it hard to recommend.
