Excellent hostel. Professional-grade kitchen, friendly staff who mailed something to us that we had left behind, and great common areas.

It took ages to do the booking on the phone, it took a while for them to find our booking as well when we did get there! The room itself was dreadful! Really very small - wood panelling the whole way round and the bed wasn't clean. The ceiling creaked so much that we wondered whether the people in the room upstairs would fall through onto our bed!!!! The shower rooms were filthy - they were also very poorly lit. I think that this more or less was one of the worst places that we stayed in this fantastic county. We would definately not recommend this place - there has to be nicer places in around Rotorua!

The complex appears to be a hotel/motel which has been converted into a hostel. The staff were super friendly on check in and throughout the stay, and the front desk lady took the time to walk us around to show us the property. The hostel has a large kitchen with a number of new hotplates and ovens, and large stainless steel benchspaces for preparing meals, however could do well to have some larger commercial style refrigerators. Found there were enough utensils for our use, however it could be somewhat limited in the availability of pots and pans when busy. There is a large TV room with lots of lounge seating and a huge LCD television with SKY tv box, DVD's available from reception, and you could plug in a hard drive using the USB port to watch your own movies. We stayed in a 8 bed dorm which we had to ourselves the first night, and shared with 3 others on the second night. Each of the dorm rooms has their own ensuite bathroom which is cool. The shower was adequate and there was also a hairdryer fitted to the wall. The beds are probably the best I've ever slept in at a hostel, and much better than many hotels I've stayed at. I had the best sleep here thanks to these beds! They are also made when you arrive, which is awesome - you can just rock in and rack out if you want. Also they don't allow anyone to check in to occupied rooms after 10pm so you won't be disturbed late at night by late arrivals. The pools are great - there is a one is cold, one is warm, and a smaller one is filled with mineral water which felt awesome on the skin. They also have free wifi, you collect a code from reception which gives you 4 hours of access (which became a little tedious having to enter codes every now and then - but it worked and was pretty fast). Great hostel, good sleep quality, plenty of space, pools, large kitchen, awesome TV room, friendly staff. What more could you want? Its only a short walk from town. If I'm back in Rotorua I'd definitely stay here again!

Initially, I had only planned to spend one night in Rotorua. After speaking with Bastin about the activities and places he recommended, I changed my plans, cancelled my reservation at Hot Water Beach and spent two nights here. I paid for sharing a room with two bunks, four beds. I was surprised that I had the room to myself for both nights. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful cat, Blakely, who always enjoyed being petted. Bailey also helped me recommend places based on my interest and amount of money I had to spend on my last day. She even shared some milk for my hot tea with me. This is the only hostel that I stayed at who provided laundry detergent to wash your clothes. You pay to use the washer and dryer and they have powdered laundry detergent available. All of their staff was very helpful and friendly with anything you need. I highly recommend staying here when in Rotorua.

I don't remember the…read morespecific room # I stayed, the name of the lady who served my boyfriend and I breakfast in the morning nor the name of the concierge, but they all left a lasting positive impression on me while staying for a couple days. The hotel inside and out seemed a bit old-fashioned and Victorian-styled, but it seemed like an established location. The gentlemanly concierge who was well-dressed and well-spoken greeted us warmly and helped us to our room. Our room was great! Very clean and neat; it also had PLENTY of space to relax in the bedroom, living room and even the bathroom. Slept like a baby, too! As for the amenities I noticed (since we didn't stay there the entire day), the hotel's centermost area had dining areas which were a bit difficult for me to navigate, but it looked like it could hold quite a few people for events. There's an outdoor area with eating tables and a small outdoor heated pool which we also didn't use, but seemed cute and cozy. Wi-fi and TV were available for use as well (we had no issues with them). We ordered breakfast to be sent to our rooms and were greeted by a friendly lady. The food was EXCELLENT. I clearly remember my salmon eggs benedict like it was yesterday. Incredibly tasty and totally started my morning! I think older folks would like this hotel, but I think open-minded, younger people could appreciate this the location as well. The staff, especially the concierge, was incredibly helpful and friendly. It's the first time I've been to a hotel like this, and I definitely wouldn't mind coming back again should I visit Rotorua once more.

The only complaint we would…read morehave is that we were told to walk through the breakfast area right after checking in, and roughly an hour after tried to go through and we're stopped due to a private function. Now if they had told us there was an alternate route when checking in, we would have taken that. Second issue, the next morning at breakfast we went into the breakfast dining room as instructed at check in, and we were abruptly told to wait outside by female staff until her "colleague" could assist us. Now, in most cases, this would be fine. However, we were merely following the instructions given at check in. She also could have employed more tact & courtesy in how she communicated. After we were seated we were still a bit gobsmacked at how unprofessional and abrupt the staff member was. Finally, despite turning off radiator in the room and opening a window, the rooms were VERY warm. Likely fine for Western tourists, but for those of us living in the area, it was way too warm. Overall, a pleasant stay, but would advise that staff to get in the same page to avoid awkward situations when conflicting messages are given to guests.

It was about a 15 minute walk. Tours do pick up from the front entrance. Rooms: Ours was on the 2nd floor but luckily they brought our luggage up for us as the rooms weren't ready when we arrived. The two bedroom we had was okay, nothing special. There was a strange smell in the bathroom- like sulphur, which reminded me of Iceland. It was unpleasant. There is a small "kitchen" area but the counter and sink were pretty high. Service: I am giving this hotel 5 stars mainly because of the service, which is something I rarely do. Everyone at the front was extremely helpful and nice. They were also very hard-working as they seemed to cover the front checkin checkout, luggage service, as well as the restaurant. We called down with questions and by the time we came downstairs, they had printed out a map for us. The first thing I noticed was the A/C-even though we have been staying in expensive places, this is the first with in-room A/C-hallelujah! They are located at the bottom of a steep and narrow driveway in the middle of lush gardens and jaw-dropping scenery. Another thing you can't help but notice is their affinity for the color black-it is called the black Swan after all-the building itself is painted black, even the walls inside the pool are black making for a most unusual experience, and of course their are numerous real black swans in the lake nearby to feed (desk provides some bread). We were situated in room 5 (the have 8 in total) with a killer view of the lake. The room is very high style with deep black carpet, white king bed and sleek modern bath. There's even a little black and white checked teddy bear that gets tucked into the bed with the turn-down service. The shower has both a big rain shower head as well as the hand-held wand and plenty of water pressure. There is a small restaurant upstairs that serves breakfast (you select from a menu, same choices daily) as well as evening although we only sampled the breakfast which was freshly prepared and good. The pool was solar heated so quite warm and they also have two whirlpool spas in a separate small building above the pool. In short this place is a quiet luxury oasis. Quite expensive but a nice treat. Highly recommended.
