Payless Fence

Payless Fence

Absolute. Nightmare…read more I got 5 estimates on a complete fence replacement. Ended up choosing Payless because Ben seemed very personable and had good Google reviews... I learned pretty quickly that I had been duped, and not to always trust Google reviews. There were multiple changes to the start date. Originally 4/21, then 4/23, then 4/28, then 4/30, then 5/5. Communication was poor at best - mostly, it was only when I reached out to him that I learned it was delayed yet again. He offered stump removal as a service for $150/hr. He showed up with a small grinder that was in no way adequate for the large stumps and two day laborers who were in no way skilled to do it. Grinder kept smoking and cutting out, and the guys were trying, but could only shave off parts of the stumps little by little. Ben had left, so I called him and told him to have them stop. He came back and was extremely agitated and argumentative. I asked him to calm down and said we needed to be able to have a normal conversation, but he wouldn't... Why would he bring the wrong equipment and guys who didn't know what they were doing? "That's all Home Depot had," and yelled, "I'm a FENCE guy, NOT a stump grinder guy!" His behavior made me extremely uncomfortable... So much so that I asked if I could just pay him for the one section of fence he took down and cancel the contract. He sneered, "Go ahead and cancel it, but you're not getting your deposit back." Mind you, not one bit of material had been delivered at this point, even though he had said he'd be bringing it and never did... Later, I received a text demanding $225 for the grinder rental before he would proceed with any work. I paid it (regrettably) -- I just wanted him to finish the work and be done... I paid to have the stumps ground by Davey Tree Service. Once he resumed (3 days later) he arrived far later in the day than he said he would - this would prove to be an ongoing issue. There was no fence between me and my neighbors, and I asked him to let me know when he'd be coming so they could keep their dog inside - he didn't do that, either... All of the delays resulted in my having to take additional days off work and cancel a planned vacation. Days later, I finally had ONE section of fence done. The day he was to start on another section, he texted me to say he was "Still figuring out post situation. Going have to go a different route and dig and set 10 ft posts." When I questioned this, as the contract stated that 12 foot posts would be used, he replied, "Also I have to weld up 2 more feet onto 10 ft posts since we are going according to contract, because I'm not spending what they're asking for them." Total breach of contract!! What he did with the $9,000 I gave him, I'll never know... It sure wasn't used to buy materials for my fencing. At this point, I'd had enough - told him not to come back until he heard from me. I needed to speak with my attorney, for sure... I also started doing a bit more digging into Payless Fence (I SHOULD have done this before I hired him and gave him a ton of money - kicking myself for this everyday...) His website had been taken down (he had one when I hired him,) he has NO business license and his LLC is delinquent. Wondering if he's gone out of business, left town, or ??? The old fencing had just been piled up in the alley behind my neighbor's. I asked when he'd be taking it away, heard nothing, texted him back 3 days later, and he said he'd be coming to get it that weekend. He never did. So I called 1-800-GOTJUNK -- $980 to have it hauled away. AND - no pressure-treated rot board on the one section he did, as in the contract. AND he didn't install a gate to replace the old one he tore down, which resulted in a clear opening from the street into the backyard. So I had to hire someone to build and install a temporary gate immediately for security purposes. I'm now in a credit card dispute through my credit union, have sent him a demand letter for what he owes me, and will pursue it in Small Claims Court if there is no resolution. I will update here.

I do not leave reviews for people I do not hire but I found this team to be very rude. I am happy…read moreto share screenshots of text with Yelp staff for proof on my interaction with this team. Even phone records if they would like. I called on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. There was no answer and I left a voicemail. Never heard back from them so I called again on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. I started to leave another voicemail and my voicemail was randomly disconnected in the middle, which was weird (also a feature many networks let you do if you preview the voicemail and decide not to proceed). So I sent a text and he called me back immediately. This part felt better honestly, finally able to talk to someone. I sent him my name and address via text, he will send me date and time options for scheduling. Later a few days later, the team texted me saying they would like pictures instead. This is Friday, July 19, 2024 per the text timestamps (can be provided for verification if needed to Yelp or anyone else). He requested pictures and was obviously not scheduling an appointment. I was not able to take the pictures immediately the same day. They were sent over approx one week later on July 27th as I had a personal emergency to prioritize. Instead of a poor quality pictures, I decided to take my time, do a detailed walk through and take two videos. I even took the time to zip it up for him and upload it to dropbox (public easy to download link, industry used for over 10+ years and intuitive). They responded by telling me that: "Your videos are not viewable. I don't believe I will be the best contractor for you. The major delay of response is not a good first sign for communication for me. Also I am not available to look at your project this week. Let alone start till mid October. I wish you the best and hope your project goes well." This is laughable, they were hard enough to get ahold of the first time, they never came out to give an estimate as agreed in first phone call and then they give me an attitude when I go out of my way to give them a detailed video instead of crappy pictures. Obviously I am proceeding with someone else, but this was a weirdly disappointing experience. This business is blacklisted and blocked in my books and they are not welcome to bid of any of my work, ever. I find it weird they have so many other 5 star reviews that contradict the experience I had so I am exercising my first amendment right to share what happened with me. P.S. I can tell team is not tech savvy with the basics when they request info from you, i.e., you cannot play a video inside a zip file, you have to unzip first.

We appreciated their prompt response with communication. They were open to discussing different ideas and questions for the project. However, this type of project seems to be something they do frequently, which is good. We needed a permit from the city. This slows things down. However, it didn't take too much time to finish the project. I appreciate how they integrated the existing roof line into the new roof. You can't tell it was even there. They did subcontract the roof and gutters. But that's not their specialty, which is okay. They stated they could have done the roof if needed. In all they did an excellent job.

I requested quotes for four other companies in our area and decided to go with Juan and his company as they had the most competitive offer for what I wanted installed. During my initial inquiry, I knew that I was going to get great service from the onset of our conversation. I requested a quote using his website and within an hour he contacted me and arranged to accommodate my schedule and came out on a Sunday to do a site survey. By Sunday evening I had an estimate and three days later his team of professionals were installing my new fence. They were extremely professional, polite and completed over 200' of red cedar fencing within two days. Additionally, they did an extremely detailed walkthrough and cleaned up all the debris. I have dogs, this was a very nice touch and spoke volumes to the quality of their work and I didnt have to worry about screws or nails being left in my yard. I plan on having them come out next year to install a wood Pergolas. Seriously, if you're in the Aurora area and looking for a new fence, Juan is your man.

UPDATE: Juan threatened my personhood & property - to illegally trespass on our property & remove…read morethe new fence & gate, which would also result in theft, as he removed our old fence & gate. I've been advised to report him to Denver Police & my attorney. ---- Over-promise & Under-deliver, with a side of machismo - by the owner: Juan. ----- It all started innocently, when I called Kim, the receptionist, for an estimate in late Sep or early Oct. Instead of sending a person out for an estimate, she told me all she needed was photos of my existing fence & gate, and from there, she'd create an estimate. At no point did she ask me for measurements, and - given I'm not in the fencing, gate, construction, painting, or staining industry - I trusted her & her boss, Juan, as well as foreman Raul and Ruin to guide me through the process. This is, after all, why I hired the job out, and hired what I thought were professionals. Instead, on the initial scheduled day, it came to my attention that they only purchased enough materials for a 6-foot fence & 6-foot gate, when it was clear - from the photos - that the fence was higher than the gate (8-feet). Raul & I canceled that job, and we re-scheduled from Mon 10/9 to Tue 10/17. In parallel, I was told by Kim that she/they could easily match the existing stain on my fence/gate, and I need not worry about finding a color. This was also untrue. After the reschedule, Kim asked me to find photos of stains I liked. I started on Home Depot, and they had hundreds, if not thousands, of brands, types of stains (oil-based or water-based), and colors. I had no idea where to start. Given I was hiring professionals - or so I thought - in order to narrow it down, I went to JCQN's Yelp page, and found photos of their past/sample work that I liked. I took photos of the fences & gates I liked - including style & color, and changed my initial fence/gate design from vertical pickets to horizontal, to be more modern. And I decided on a natural redwood stain, and sent photos of both the style I desired, and color. Kim & I resolved the initial measurement misunderstanding, and she was diplomatic, professional, and apologetic, acknowledging she should've explained the material measurements on the estimate, and asked me to measure & verify. Yes! Again, the reason you hire professionals, is for them to guide you with their experience. If I wanted to DIY, I would've gone to Home Depot myself, rather than to Yelp. I did not have the time - or interest - to DIY, which is why I trusted JCQN's multiple reviews, and nearly 5-star status. WRONG! Just like my beau has consistently been telling me - don't trust the reviews. I learned this lesson the hard way, with this company. Tue 10/17 came & went, and Ruin & another gentleman installed a great looking fence & gate - this time, with the correct measurements. Though I wanted to have it stained & sealed on the same day, fearing this exact situation, Kim told me the owner, Juan, said that's not possible, and the wood needs to "sit" for "one week" then it moved to "one and a half weeks," which raised suspicion. (Home Depot's paint/stain & lumber departments told me this was BS last night, as I suspected. If the wood is cedar - as I was told it would be, not fabricated, it does not need to sit before staining.) According to Juan/Kim, I had to wait 1-week, then 1.5-weeks, then only a few days to stain/seal. We scheduled it for Fri 10/20. Fri 10/20 arrived, and Kim canceled, saying Juan was too busy. I pulled rank. Then Juan was magically going to show-up after all. He arrived, with the wrong stain - not the one Kim & I discussed, and I selected. Juan attempted to gaslight & blame me - for his mistake - rather than accepting accountability & owning it, and that story is too long for the character limits of Yelp, unfortunately. Juan blamed me - the female customer. Juan blamed Kim - the female employee, including blaming her age: "she's only 20," vs. his "20-years of experience at age 50". Juan blamed me: "I only want to make you happy," attempting to imply I wouldn't be happy with my initial redwood stain selection, and I should go with the cedar/natural he brought, thinking he could manipulate me, in order to fix his mistake. It was a huge mess. Juan then refused to reschedule the job (something about his personal affairs & if he doesn't repair his son's house by next Tuesday, he'll "go to jail"), and now I'm stuck with a beautiful raw, wood fence & gate - that will mold & become useless the minute it rains or snows. Kim negotiated with Juan to refund me the $1,800 I paid for the fence & gate, but neither one of them can refund me the $1,840 worth of my billable *TIME* (that I can never get back) that I wasted on this nightmare. Luckily, I now have 1 other contractor scheduled for Monday, and 3 on stand-by, should that fall through, given the weather is getting colder, which is not ideal for staining.
