It was Bookstore Movers' excellent customer service that earns them 5 stars. The 3 movers showed up early and worked very quickly and efficiently. In that haste, some items were damaged and I offered that feedback in the follow-up survey. I quickly received a call from the company offering to discount my move and send Walter Davies, a furniture repair person, out to make furniture repairs. That concern for customers and making things right earns Bookstore Movers 5-star service. Walter Davies was excellent and thorough in repairing my furniture. We had a dedicated elevator, yet workers often brought items down only one or two at a time. I also saw team members on their phones or standing around in rooms and hallways instead of actively moving things. These delays added up quickly. The crew also misplaced parts of our bed frame, and the pieces had to be found before it could be reassembled. That alone added nearly an hour to the move. Because the move took much longer than expected, the final cost was significantly higher than the estimate we received. We were also charged based on an arrival time that was recorded as ten minutes earlier than when the crew actually arrived. The team was courteous, but given the inefficiency, added time, and higher final price, we would not use Bookstore Movers again. This is unfortunate, because we had been happy with them in previous moves.

THE WORST MOVING EXPERIENCE in my life, in which I have moved multiple times due to the military…read moreand work. Let me tell you my day with JD Movers. They showed up at 8:00am as scheduled with the tiniest truck. In my conversation with them before scheduling the service I explained the move we wanted. I described the items we had and I asked him to come and see for himself, he replied, "I charge an hourly flat fee." I said ok, cool. He was not my only quote I got, but he was a little more affordable than the others (I was quoted pretty much the same 6-7 hours in total by multiple companies). When they arrived he claimed that I was not clear when I told him about our move, which I was. He said that I did not ask him to bring the 2 trucks he had. Well Sir, it's not up to me to tell you the amount of space or people you need for the job. Also he scheduled me for 4 people it was only 3. Then I continued with my day and they started packing few things (many of them were already packed) he came with the smallest boxes and also complained about the many things we had. They went to pick up another U-Haul around 12:00pm so we can fit everything. They finished "packing" around 3:00pm They DID NOT COVER OR PROTECT THE BIG FURNITURE ITEMS. It took them more than the usual time to arrive to the destination, they stopped by 7-11. When they arrived and started unloading they broke many things. My walls were all dirty and some of them had dents. My dinner table was scratched due to the lack of protection and my other big items were also very dirty. THEY TOOK 11 HOURS TO COMPLETE THE JOB!! And if 11 hours doesn't sound crazy, THEY DID NOT UNPACK ANYTHING, NOTHING AT ALL. Since we were on the clock and we knew they will take another 5-7 hours to unpack we decided to end the move. Again the worst moving experience ever. We moved from a 3 BR house with only 2 adults living in it. MANY things were already packed and at the end we had to rush putting things in trash bags because it seemed like they were never going to finish. Around 7:30 pm they were getting the last few boxes, and the owner was trying to charge us more than what it was supposed to be. I HAVE NEVER SPENT 11 HOURS WITH "PROFESSIONALS" MOVING THE SAME ITEMS I HAD IN THE PAST. Ridiculous!! If you are reading this and you think, *oh sounds cheap,* DO NOT DO IT! I regret hiring his services, so I could help locals. I will never recommend this company to any one. -Edit from here downwards- It is easier to blame others than take responsibility for your own actions. Sadly he has nothing else to say that "I was untruthful in disclosing my real items and location" every thing else that I wrote was not mentioned on his reply since all of it is true. I am just going to add; 1- I was straight forward with all my information, since the moment I requested a quote I entered my information, the *from* to *where* *number of rooms* *number of boxes* and so forth. The location was very clear, when he gave me the invoice he knew my exact address. 2- We were never asked to buy more boxes. 3- The other companies I quoted came over to my house and knew all the items needed to be packed and transported. I still got maximum 7 hours from all, packing, disassembling, unpacking and assembling. These people did not unpack (yes, it was because they had been doing this job for over 11 hours, we were done at that point) 4- I did not disclose in my previous post the fact that he gave me a "discount" and the reason was that he wanted to charge me an additional hour for the time they spent eating. So if you count that, they took about 12 hours from start to finish. From 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. 5- He states that I fail to do "do my dutie" and not tell him what kind of vehicle he should bring, this just shows the lack of professionalism from his part. I am not going to the doctor and tell him/her what kind a medicine I need it to take, that's why you hire a professional. You do not rely on the customers imput, any one that works in customer service know that. You might take it into account but if you have been in the business long enough you know that, there's a real reason why we hire professional. The fact that he drove x number of miles back is not the costumer responsibility to know.

I attempted to hire JD the Mover and I am glad that he showed his "true colors" prior to the move…read moredate. JD's prices were fair and he has great reviews on Thumbtack. However, when I requested an agreement for the work, he replied that I may need to find someone else to do the job and that he's decided that this job now is not a good fit. Sounds like very shady business practices and that he did not want to be held responsible, in the case that the move did not go as planned. His response to my review is not true. I inquired if there was a difference in price from weekdays to weekends. The entire text thread conversation has been uploaded. Who hires a business for a service, pays them hundreds of dollars with no agreement? That's absurd!!! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIS SERVICES.

I used Troy several years ago and had a decent experience, which is why I hired him again…read more Unfortunately, this time was entirely different. The plan for my move changed multiple times, often with little notice. He split the move across two days, which forced me to take additional time off work. The afternoon before the move, he changed the timing again, requiring me to reschedule meetings with contractors, make alternate arrangements for my dog, and adjust loading dock reservations at both locations. He did not care how these changes impacted me, only that they made his job more efficient. I also paid extra for packing services, and the kitchen was packed so haphazardly that several boxes were falling apart from being overfilled. He didn't pack the area under the sink at all. On top of that, he left behind a number of items that were clearly part of the move--including my trash can, step stool, and a container holding several blankets--without any notice or explanation. I ended up making two additional trips to retrieve items I had explicitly hired him to move. He presents himself as an expert, but his arrogance makes him difficult to work with. If you just want your stuff moved and don't care how it happens, he'll probably get the job done. But if you need to plan around a busy schedule, value communication, or expect basic attention to detail and follow-through, I'd look elsewhere.

So after receiving a few quotes from a handful of businesses, I went with Potomac Moving due to the speed of their response, clarity in communication, pricing and overall warmth and professionalism. In our first phone call to walk though my needs, they were very assuring and accommodating, which is a such a relief in the midst of stress and coordination that comes with planning for a move. They were also always very responsive in the few times that I reached out between the time I paid the deposit and the actual move. A night or two before, I sent at email regarding wardrobe boxes, since I was debating whether or not I should buy and have a few delivered to me. The owner responded quickly, assuring me that wardrobe boxes were tried, true and if I wanted to buy any directly from them that I could. That ended up being a great call, because they were able to properly enforce the boxes so that even the boxes filled with my heaviest coats remained in tact. On the day of the move, the movers were communicative regarding their arrival time. They were also very nice and hard working. I had a few large furniture items that needed to be disassembled and they ended up being quite beasts to tackle. But they worked diligently to break them down. Once it came time to move things to my new place, that was a breeze. One gesture that I thought was just so classy, was the owner called in the middle of the move to check-in on how things were going - I really appreciated that. Overall, would definitely recommend PMC - they're easy to work with, fair and transparent about pricing and you're sure to be met with professionalism!

Could I have avoided the stressful outcome I endured by just asking them upfront if they would move all of my boxes? If they would stay on the job until it was finished? It may sound silly to ask this of a moving company, but read on. I'll start by saying that the three men who handled my move were mostly professional and careful for the eleven or so hours that they worked. Also, I significantly underestimated the number of boxes I had to move. Serena was very helpful when I initially contacted the company. I provided an inventory of my belongings and some photographs and she worked out a quote that was agreeable. On moving day, her team showed up on time. They were all personable and receptive to my requests. By early afternoon, the moving van was filled up ... but there were still about a hundred boxes in the old house. Suppose the new house didn't have enough room for everything? I asked if they could help me take the remaining items to a storage facility. They pointed out that by the time the van was unloaded, regular offices hours at those facilities would be over. The new house was about a 20 minute drive from the old house. I left in my car and the movers left in their van at around the same time. I arrived at the new house expecting them to be right behind me. For quite a while, they didn't show. I tried calling them but they didn't answer. After about 45 minutes, they arrived. They took a break for lunch. That's fine. Why didn't they just tell me? I labelled each of my boxes with the name of the room where I wanted it to go. For the most part the movers put the boxes in the correct rooms. However, the next morning I could not locate my toothbrush, razor, and a number of other items so I had to purchase replacements. They also dented a wall when moving the couch. They compensated for this by deducting a credit from my total bill. Sometime between 7:30 and 8:00 pm, the men had finished unloading the moving van. The boxes were distributed fairly evenly throughout the house and there was still free space remaining in each room. The team leader started preparing my bill, so I thought they were done for the day. I settled the bill and anxiously tried to figure out how I was going to get the rest of my boxes moved. Was I going to call another moving company? Rent a cargo van? Over the next week and a half, I made ten trips, usually after work, from my old house to the new one, squeezing as many boxes as I could into my little sedan. I finally got the last of the boxes moved. Not fun for an old guy with a bad back. The entire episode left me exhausted and wondering if somehow things could have been handled better. A few days after completing the second stage of my move (and nearly two weeks after the first stage) I received a voice mail message from Serena. She wanted to know how things went. She already knew there had been an issue with me having too many boxes for one trip because one of the movers had called the office on the day of the move to advise her. In her message Serena said that the office was currently closed for a holiday but that I could call her on her dedicated line. Unfortunately, she didn't realize that her line had been switched off for the holiday and was not accepting messages. A day or two later we did manage to connect. Serena was careful to ask me just a few general questions so as to avoid suggesting that anything had been handled improperly. At the same time, she wanted to know what had happened and what options, if any, I was given. I eventually told Serena that none of the movers offered to make a second trip to collect the rest of my boxes and I believed that was because they did not work after 8:00 or 9:00 pm. Serena assured me that sometimes they worked past midnight. They keep working until the job was done. Except in my case. She also agreed that the three men could have moved the last set of boxes within 90 to 120 minutes. Serena told me she would discuss the matter with the movers and get back to me. But I never heard back from her. I still don't know what to make of this entire affair. I work in customer service and I use all of my resources to ensure the all of my clients' needs are fulfilled. That's what they depend on my for. Of course, if I knew there was an option of making one more relatively short trip to complete the job, I would have gladly taken it. The company would have gotten more money, the movers would have received larger tips, and I wouldn't have faced the ordeal of moving a hundred boxes a dozen at a time by myself. Ouch!

Originally, I was quoted a timeframe between 1-5pm, they showed up an hour EARLIER! To some this may have been the part where you panic, especially if you are running small items back and forth to your new place, to me?? This was PERFECT, because I was able to have a headstart for my long moving day. The truck was large enough, both movers came in and were polite, patient, and did not make me feel uncomfortable when handling my items.
