I just found out about a "High tea" scene in Utrecht that I didn't even know existed - with…read moreBakkerswinker at the heart. It's an old bakery that has been around for almost 300 years. They have a bakery counter if you need things to take away. The dining room is located mostly in the cozy kelder that has windows looking out to a gracht that's adjacent. A group of five came hungry, and we chose high tea, since it's closest thing to brunch you can find. There are several different high tea options on the menu with focus on sweet, savory, or everything ranging from €20-30. There is also a good selection of a la carte items for €5-10. We were overwhelmed with an attack of food and tea. The food started with a scone, jam, and clotted cream course served with two giant pots of tea. Then we continued along (see my picture) and were served a tower of two plates of small sandwiches (five different varieties), bowls of soup, various kinds of quiche, and a plate of sweets, chocolates, and tartes. Two more pots of tea showed up with the main course and they brought one more at the end as a palate cleanser. Five pots of tea total. Don't miss the Lapsang tea. Impressive - fresh food made from scratch and fun staff with good service. Casual atmosphere. See you there for high tea sometime!

Large portions so you can certainly share plates. The meatball was large and like a big patty, served with a grilled onion and bread that was not my favorite. Most other items were fried with thicker outer breading and then was served with more slices of bread. During lunch, they had a good selection of brunch items too like pistachio strawberry french toast and lox toast. Interior is cute and centrally located. I'm not the biggest fan of Netherland food, but appreciated the chance to try it here!

Because this space is sectioned off, none of the noise from the main dining traveled here, making this area super romantic and cozy. I recommend sitting here if you can! I ordered the Gehaktbal with a side of fries. The waitress said that if we get a meatball dish anywhere, it should be from this establishment. Did it live up to her claims? Not really. While I loved the sauce, the meatball was a bit too soft (I am impressed though by how the chef was able to cook this in a pan without it breaking apart). It felt like I was eating meat sauce rather than a meatball. Texture wise, it left a lot to be desired. The boyfriend got Melanzane (it's basically like a lasagna, but with eggplant layers instead of pasta layers). To me, it tasted super bland, and the lack of texture made me think this dish was made for people without teeth. Like it was just such a soggy mess. It came with a side of salad. The salad was fresh, but I left most of it untouched as I found the dressing barely palatable. Save yourself the €17,50 and order something else. Lastly, we tried the tropical smoothie. A bit overpriced, but it tasted very fresh.
