He is charismatic, pleasant, knowledgeable, obviously has a lot of experience under his belt, helpful, practical, and on the same wave length agreeing with me that the less medication, the better. But as soon as I had something of a serious nature for the first time in my life, he for some reason is not able to accept my complaints as valid. And he breaks one of the rules of doctoring which is to believe the patient's complaints! He has actually for the past seven months been denying that what I describe as my symptoms are happening! This is the logical extension of his sunny disposition. I remember now that he has often been that way. I once told him that after wearing a heart monitor for 13 days, the result was first degree heart block. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" My stepdaughter told him he had a spot on her lung of 0.5 centimeter. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" And I remember how in past years, I always leave his office feeling better than when I came. But the day came seven months when I presented with a serious condition, and he has persisted and persisted since in saying, "Oh, that's nothing. It's all in your mind." (He has actually told me that the main thing wrong with me is my mind. I learned that that is called "gaslighting.") And I know that isn't true, and I know he is wrong. And if this same thing happens to you, you should be apprised that that is the day you must make a decision--whether to continue to put yourself in danger or to part ways.

My hubby had to fix a few instances between us bumping heads, but he takes responsibility that you are his patient. He does not do any modern testing at his office nor suggests it unless you ask and he will write a script. In his own words he "works for God". He certainly does. He will help anyone with pain as long as you prove there is a reason to. Honestly, I love him. At first, it was difficult because I'm very aggressive, but I learned his nature and how to work with him. Today, I tell him everything. I can cry, be sincere, laugh or debate. He's genuinely sent from above and I'm very fortunate I met him. Be calm and honest. May take a few attempts to get him to listen fully, but he is not about money. Many prescribe to make money including very invasive surgeries like an opioid pump. He will NOT do that. He will keep you alive and do his best to save your other organs such as your liver while trying to treat your pain. Be patient with him and you will thank above for him being in your life. At the time, I was very unhappy with my current PCP due to his horrible office staff. Therefore, after a bit of research, I made an appointment with Dr. Retsagi. The practice is very small. His staff consists of a lab tech (I forgot her name) and the receptionist (Rita). Both are absolutely wonderful and always give me a very warm welcome. The only negative about Dr. Retsagi is sometimes he runs a little behind. Don't be surprised if you have to wait a half an hour, but I don't mind. It just shows he is taking his time with patients. As for Dr. Retsagi himself, he is everything a doctor should be - very kind, gentle, and very knowledgeable. He truly cares about his patients and always tells me to call him anytime if I have any problems. For my pre-op testing for the lap band surgery, he left no stone unturned. He carefully reviewed all my lab reports and also ordered some additional tests. He is also extremely fast about returning phone calls in emergency situations. One thing I forgot to mention when I first wrote this review - Dr. Retsagi's business hours are from 12-8PM, which is perfect for all us working people. If you have to reach him in the morning, leave a message on his voicemail and he will get back to you ASAP.

About 3 years ago I turned 50yo and asked Dr. Retsagi if I should schedule for a colonoscopy, but with confident assurance he said the a stool smear test was sufficient. I asked him again, and he again restated. Since I did not look forward to the colonoscopy prep (which is, btw, not all that bad as I found out) I went along with his advice. At least once more on my last checkup I repeated my concerns and was again reassured by him. Then, about 3 months ago my heart sank when I looked into my toilet after voiding to see bright red water. The colonoscopy revealed long existing polyps that I had to wait anxiously for 2 weeks to find out were benign. I was furious! For another example, a couple of years ago I complained to him about moderate hearing loss and asked if it's possible I had ear wax. He looked and said I was fine. 6 months later I went to a specialist who exclaimed that I had a lot of ear wax. This specialist told me it was certainly possible for a regular doctor to miss this, so I let it go. My new doctor looked in my ear and told me immediately that I now have ear wax buildup again, even without my complaining about hearing loss. I am through with Dr. Retsagi!

He always asks "is there anything else?" and gives any new issues the same amount of attention and patience. The last time I was there, he reminded me that it was time for a flu shot, and gave it to me immediately. Third, he is willing to let his patients challenge him and to challenge them back. I am very pill-shy, and he will not only describe what the pills will do, but the side-effects - and how long it will take to recover. My spouse is the type who researches everything on the internet, and Dr. Diamond engages her in what information is accurate in her particular case. Finally, he builds relationships with his patients. I don't need to review my medical history with him. Dr. Diamond's secondary specialty is geriatrics, and I have referred several older friends to him, including some older gay men who are HIV positive. They have told me that he has helped them better manage their medications and provided useful information on health management. If you are in Flushing and looking for a new doctor, I recommend him. He's at Kissena and Holly, and there are 5 buses that stop in front of his office.
