In my opinion, Dr. Hartman is truly one of the best dermatologist doctors you can find. It's honestly rare these days to meet a physician who takes this much time with patients, listens carefully, and genuinely works to find the root cause before making a diagnosis instead of rushing through the visit. What really stood out to me was how thoughtful and accurate his clinical analysis was, and how well he explains everything to his patients. He educates you in a way that actually makes sense, which makes it much easier to trust the process, follow the treatment plan, and stay compliant with his recommendations. Beyond his knowledge and expertise as a dermatologist, you can clearly see that he truly cares about his patients and respects them. He loves what he does, and it shows in the way he practices medicine. I had a cyst on my chest. A doctor in Beverly Hills wanted to charge me over $300 to remove it, despite my having insurance. I decided to live with the cyst until it became majorly infected. Dr. Hartman has always loved the sound of his own voice. He performs the same monologues every time I see him. He's always been a bad listener. However, this last time he was overtly insulting. He handled my very exposed body like I was a cow up for auction. He then turned his back to me and described his findings: to my husband. It happened again and again: I would ask a question and he would turn his back and speak to my husband.Like it was 1950 and he was recommending my husband lobotomize me to cure my hysteria. I have 3 different kinds of keratosis. He advised me to use Albolene, which is a mix of petroleum jelly and mineral oil. I got a second opinion from another dermatologist. Dr. Hartman is a very knowledgeable Adult and Pediatric Dermatologist. What I like most about seeing him is that he takes the time to go over proper skin care and what to look for in between visits. The office staff is generally unpleasant. There is always a wait and a huge wait at that. They have zero consideration for your time. And this is something they are totally aware of. They told me "if you don't want to wait over an hour, you need to be the first appointment or the first appointment after lunch." So they know very well what they are doing. So after nearly 2 hours in the waiting room at my last visit, I told them quite kindly I could no longer wait and had to get back to work. They were not happy that I had to go. Also I was there for a recheck after a procedure which left marks on my face. Thankfully gone now but when I called to discuss to see if that was normal, the doctor would not get on the phone and I got totally mixed messages from the staff. Basically I was told I had to wait several months until my appointment . Then I arrived and waited 2 hours and never saw him. And I never will. Terrible experience all around. Dr Hartmann is the ONLY dermatologist in the LA area who successfully treated my skin issue. I spent a couple of years going to different dermatologists which resulted in my skin problem becoming so bad that it blanketed my skin from scalp to backs of knees. It was so awful that I could not sleep well and showering became a painful experience. For a time, the skin problem disabled me and I was miserable and uncomfortable 24 hours a day, day after day. I couldn't work out, wear clothes comfortably, or lead a normal life. I went to a doctor at one of the most highly regarded hospitals in LA, another doctor at a highly respected teaching hospital, and another doctor at a fancy office in Beverly Hills, but none of these doctors bothered to actually treat my condition. All the other doctors did was prescribe corticosteroid creams and tell me not to take a hot shower and this only helped slightly but never really treated my issue in a productive manner, in fact, the creams seem to make it come back worse. Dr. Hartmann gave me many creams other than steroids and he offered other medications as well. When I think back to how the other dermatologists treated me I get upset because I now realize that they didn't take my medical issue seriously which resulted in my condition becoming a nightmare. Dr. Hartmann is very knowledgeable and he took my issue seriously and didn't stop giving me a medication regimen until we found one that actually worked! To put it plain and simple, Dr. Hartmann gave me my quality of life back and I would never step foot in those other dermatologists' offices again. I just hope that Dr. Hartmann does not retire because I would have no credible doctor to go to. It's really hard to find a dermatologist who actually treats skin ailments and doesn't prioritize patients who want cosmetic procedures. Dr. Hartmann was always professional with me and he's funny if you catch him in a humorous mood. If Dr. Hartmann retires, I may have to start looking outside of the LA area for a dermatologist because LA is full of dermatologists who are money grubbing quacks who just want to get rich from insecure people who want lip fillers or some kind of cosmetic junk done. The plastic surgery industry has made it where people with legitimate skin issues struggle to find a real doctor who will take their problem seriously and give them effective treatment. Once again Dr Hartman's office is a disappointment, I thought things have changed but it appears they have not. He is a great Dr his office is not. He did a procedure on my shoulder and told his staff that he wanted to follow up in December when the follow up did not happen I did my own follow up and was told I would not be able to see him for over a month. I randomly had a severe rash at age 67. I assumed it was due to soap or another topical element in my daily routine. The rash lasted and grew. I went in for my yearly skin check appointment with Dr. Hartman and left with no precancerous spots but instead a diagnosis of moderate/severe eczema. I was shocked. Dr. Hartman is on top of the latest treatments and information. He explained everything to me, prescribed the medicine I needed and my skin has started to heal. I have been a patient of Dr. Hartmann's since I was six years old. Up until recently I had imagined this doctor to be one of the best. Unfortunately that changed when his receptionist discriminated against my 7 year old son for having the same insurance he had at previous visits. She told me that she would not allow him to be seen by the doctor, bc we have medical now. (Which again makes absolutely no sense since he had medical in January during the last visit). This was a follow up visit for my son, and he has a very painful wart on his foot. The woman by the name of Elvia in this office has no business working in any customer facing position. Not only did she turn us away bc of the type of insurance we have, but also, when asked to provide the doctors medical license ID number, and her name, she promptly shut the window, returned and advised me that I will no longer be seen by the doctor. I said I wasn't going to leave until my son received the follow up care. She said "IF YOU DONT LEAVE NOW I WILL CALL SECURITY". In a panic my son said "Mommy no"! Today I received two letters from the doctor indicating that I was no longer a patient of his. He must've forgotten that this was a visit for my son. See attached letters to confirm the cowardly attempt to protect his medical license. When changes occur in a clients life, and they have an emergency it is certainly most unethical to refuse seeing a patient when they had no prior knowledge of the type of insurance you needed to have in order to be seen. As a young patient seeing Dr. Hartman for almost four years now, I am so grateful I found him. I'm so satisfied with the care and service I have experienced. Looking at other reviews, some do seem unpleasant but my experiences with Dr. Hartman have always left me thinking nothing but positive thoughts. Parking is a bit of a pain, but I usually come in early morning and find an ample amount of street parking. There's a lot in front which I used to park in when they used to validate parking but they don't anymore so I just park on the street now. Dr. Hartman himself is wonderful. He does seem to rush through his appointments but I don't think he does so for malicious or negative reasons, I just think he's good at his job thus can quickly diagnose the problem. I've been in for several issues such as hyper-pigmentation, severe acne, and seborrheic dermatitis and have always received the greatest care and advice from Dr. H. Quick and fairly easy remedies or medications have always helped my conditions improve. My only negative is the wait times. It can get exhausting and I have waited an hour for an appointment, but I can honestly see why. He's great at what he does so a lot of people want to see him. I'd recommend bringing a book or downloading some movies/episodes on Netflix (as they don't have wifi) while you wait. I come in early in the morning now and avoid wait times so I'm not necessarily discouraged. The office staff is also extremely helpful. I believe I have met all of them throughout the years and they're all super attentive, for my issues at least. I read that some people have poor experiences but I personally have had good experiences with them. Granted it does sometimes take forever to get off of hold but I usually get my issues resolved that same day or a call back within the next two days if needed. I've never had an emergency where I needed something ASAP but I've found that it's important to be mindful that there is one doctor and only a few staff to help. I'm glad I found Dr. H. all those years ago! I go to school in Irvine but live near Encino so I still routinely go see him for check ups. I used to have another dermatologist when I was much younger and my issues were not really resolved and would come back much more often than now. After a year-and-a-half trying to figure out what was wrong with my skin, multiple doctors, tests and expensive treatments, Dr. Hartman finally figured out what was wrong. I had Discoid Lupus. if I could I would give him a zero I have been seeing Dr.Robert Hartman over 20 years. I had an appointment with him to remove some small brown spots. He decided without asking me and went ahead with taking a vein out, using a device to remove the brown spots, They scabbed and it turned into a red spot. I call his office and they said to give it some time. Then I went in again , because it wasn't going away. He did what he did the last time, but used a different method, and it scabbed, but this time it was worse, it was more red. I called his office again and was told to wait 2 to 3 months. it still did not go away. Today my son had an appointment, but, I wanted to show the doctor that it was worse. He said there is nothing he could do. He said to use makeup or get it lasered. I said this your fault, are you going to pay for it and he replied no, even though he caused me to have a scar. He stared yelling at me and we left. They took the co-pay, which my bank will take care of. I trusted him and he scared my face. Very sad since I've been seeing him for a long time. read more

My rheumatologist recommended him so I could get a rash examined. He said Dr. Hartman is one of the few dermatologists in LA who does not do plastic surgery. However, when I was waiting (and I did have to wait over an hour to see doctor), a Botox rep came in and it was clearly not her first time. When I finally saw Dr. Hartman he was rude, patronizing, and said my rash could be "anything" and that I could neither look at what has caused a rash in the past or what might happen in the future. I asked him what I could do to prevent sunburns as I take an anti-inflammatory that causes me to burn easily--I use sunscreen and wear a hat but am always pink. He said that I was wrong because he has prescribed that very drug to prevent sun sensitivity? At this point I would like to acknowledge that a random woman with an iPad was in the room, and it was unclear to me her role. After a few minutes, the doctor wandered off. The woman with an iPad handed me a sample of lip balm and then wandered off. I would never go back. It would be one thing if he were just late. Most doctors are behind. But he was useless, wasted my time, and talked to me like I am an idiot. Hard pass. read more

My family of 5 has been going to Dr. Hartman for about 11 years. Up until about 2 years ago, my experiences were excellent. However, over the course of the last two years, the service and professionalism have deteriorated to the point of unbelievable. Impossible to get an appointment in under 4 weeks, even when I called with a situation that could have turned life threatening with my daughter whom had a skin infection that was scary. Because we could not get in to Dr. Hartman, we wound up going to our regular doctor to get his opinion. We were going on a trip put of the country, and wanted to have her skin infection looked at. He was extremely alarmed, and wanted to put her on an IV, with the possibly of hospitalization. I called Dr. Hartman's office, told them the situation and asked for a return call. When I did not hear back from him by the end of the day, I called again, pretty frantic, and begged the staff to please have him call me immediately. That was 3 weeks ago. I NEVER heard from him. In addition to this callous disregard for any professionalism...or decency for that matter, their billing company is run by nimrods. They cannot bill insurance correctly with proper codes, and when the insurance is rejected (because of the billing dept errors), they stop trying to rebill, and start sending you past due bills. My husband mistakenly thought that they were sending us balances, and not the entire bill, and sent them a check. I called the same day he sent the check, and told them NOT to cash the check, we sent it in error. I told them I was cancelling the check....yeah, they tried to cash it anyway. And now they are trying to charge me for the bank fee for cashing the canceled check. Not sure what happened to this doctor. But he is NOT the care giver he used to be, his office is run by a bunch of inept people who so over schedule him, it is a pretty much a guarantee you will be waiting at minimum of and hour and a half for your appointment, with no apology or excuse. His billing company are idiots, and he DOES NOT CARE ANYMORE about his clients. Pathetic. Look at his reviews from 2+ years ago, and what he is getting now. The reason his rating is 3 stars right now, is due to the dozens of good reviews HE USED to get. The one stars are now adding up though, and he will only see his rating continue to crash. read more

Wow I'm really glad I came to this yelp page to know what was going on w/ the staff @ this place. I was referred to this doctor by my doctor and I had an equally awful experience w/ the staff. Obviously Dr. Hartman must be aware of this or doesn't care. This would lead me to think his attitude might not be the best either.
