This was my first visit to Charleston, SC. My husband and I were just walking around the Historic District when I came across a sign " Art Belongs to Everyone-All are Welcome ". I was immediately intrigued and love art ...so we walked in. I immediately felt comfortable. It was warm and inviting. The space was a beautiful, open , a historic brick building with beams and gorgeous hardwood floors . The walls were filled with contemporary , creative and imaginative art pieces. I enjoyed walking through each part of the gallery and found myself getting to know the artist just through their art pieces from nature, imagination and reality to playful and fun imagery. Then, there's an interactive component to the gallery, a bench you can swing on while viewing art , a piano to play, and an area to create rock art. Robert Lange, artist and owner of the gallery was there. He was painting a piece. He was very nice, chatted with us and answered some of our questions about places in Charleston. Even though we didn't leave with a piece of art, we left with the idea of knowing that "art does belong to everyone " and how it sparks your inner creativity ! With all that to say, I highly recommend this art gallery in Charleston! read more

A friend introduced me to this gallery on a visit to downtown Charleston. It's set in an unobtrusive brick-fronted building that perfectly captures the charm and history of Charleston. The interior is warm and spacious and obviously designed to lure you in to see the art. The works are amazing, created by the gallery owner and other in-house artists. Several of the upstairs rooms are working studios for the artists. I love the art and the atmosphere, particularly the swing and the rock room. Do yourself a favor if you're touring King Street and take the turn down Queen street. read more

Just arriving today at the start of our vacation, we set out on a tour of local art galleries. Stopping late in the day at Robert Lange's Studio turned out to be an amazing experience. Settled in an old brick building centered in the historic district, Robert gave a brief history of his gallery. It is shared with his wife, Megan, both of whom are accomplished artists. He introduced brilliant artists & their gifted work, & pulled us into an art discussion that was unforgettable. Each piece was so perfect they almost fooled us into thinking they were photographs. The undetectable brush strokes, painstaking commitment & passion of the various artists, & superb wall locations & lighting of the studio captivates your attention. My husband and I visited as many art galleries as we could in Charleston today, and the RLS gallery was by far the most engaging. The whimsical and innovative artwork was awe-inspiring, and I especially appreciated the efforts made to encourage visitors to interact with the gallery by observing artists at work, coloring templates created by one of the artists, swinging, etc. Messages throughout advised visitors that they may explore these areas, swing on the swing, talk to the artists while they work, which made the whole experience feel so inviting and welcoming. read more

What can I say about this gallery that hasn't already been said....well I'll repeat it's a true gem! We first discovered it more than 15 years ago on a vacation to Charleston and have been avid followers ever since. One thing we love the most is you never feel pressure to buy anything. The current space is perfect to just take in some great works from fantastic artists. Over the years we have purchased some awesome pieces and treasure them more and more each year. If you happen to be in the area during an opening it's an added benefit because of the various new works so get on their email list for notification. The most warm, welcoming, unpretentious gallery in Charleston. They seem to truly believe "art is for everyone". I've walked in the gallery many times dressed up and dressed very down and have always been pleasantly invited in the space. Their art selection is always inspiring or fun, or both. Robert Lange Studios is easily my favorite art gallery in Charleston. The artists in residence are incredible, and a rotation of featured artists from around country are showcased as well. I've always been an art lover, but have friends who hesitate when I invite them to this studio because they don't consider themselves "art people" or "don't get art"....but they always fall in love with the studio just as much as those who are trained artists or seasoned collectors . In short, this gallery is a good time for everyone. The artwork is modern and innovative, and so is the space itself. I love how the artists' work(s) in progress is also displayed, and on certain nights you can pull up a chair and watch them paint. This gallery throws the best opening night parties, too. I heard Robert Lange speak about his work and his experience opening this studio when he gave a public lecture at The Citadel several years ago. It was a fascinating presentation and made me appreciate his art even more-- so if you see him around the studio, don't miss an opportunity to ask him about his work! read more

This is my favorite gallery by far - and just an overall great place to hangout. The artists featured here are all extremely talented (and varying in their artistic styles) and with a new featured exhibit each month, the gallery is constantly changing. Yet, there is always that familiarity and comfort when walking through the doors; it's as if one is walking into their own personal gallery at home. The owners are wonderful people (and artists in their own right), as is the curator Curry, who is an absolute delight that is quick to great you with a warm smile upon entering. I recommend a visit to this gallery to all guests in town, so if you are ever in the French Quarter/ East Bay area, definitely stop in. "All Are Welcome." This is the phrase that greets you at Robert Lange Studios. When you open the door and walk inside, you are likely to be greeted by a smiling person at the front desk and, particularly if you have a small child with you, they'll point around the corner and excitedly say "There's a swing in that room!" Settle in on the swing and take in the art that is up for your enjoyment on the adjacent walls. Listen to someone pick out a tune on the piano in the room as you stroll around and take in the gorgeous paintings. (Or play a bit yourself if you feel so inclined...) Make your way up the stairs where you'll see another sign: "All Are Welcome." There, you might happen upon an artist at work who will let you hang around and ask questions. Lounge on the couches and discuss with a friend which painting speak to you the most, which one you could best imagine hanging in your own living room. Challenge your creativity (and entertain that aforementioned child) by building a rock sculpture. When you've taken in enough beautiful things to sustain you for the time being, make your way back downstairs and, if you're not yet ready to make a purchase, step out onto Queen Street. Don't be surprised if you find yourself asking "Did I really just have a great time at an art gallery?" "All Are Welcome." The motto of Robert Lange Studios is what first brought me through the doors and into the gallery. It's such an important idea, one that doesn't readily come to mind for most people when they think of art galleries. But it's the friendly staff, the comfortable surroundings, and of course, the stunning paintings that bring me back whenever I have a free moment to pop in. Saving my pennies for the day when I can buy one of these paintings for myself. Currently coveting #1: "Listen" by Adam Hall. I saw this stunning painting on the RLS Facebook page, and within 24 hours, I was in the gallery to admire it in person. Currently coveting #2: "Poseidon with the Inflatable Nessie" by Nathan Durfee.
