I've just moved flat and I soon learned that my new flat was, how to say, 'well loved, then left to s**t' by the previous tenants. Which is just fine, because I like a good mindless DIY project or 12. So I went in for a few necessities like pliers. And a part for my Hoover. And a US to UK power converter. And super glue. And a phone to DSL splitter thingy. And duct tape. All of which I asked for in that exact language and all of which the helpful staff immediately found for me. Their store is chock full with helpful items that I'm sure all have wonderful purposes unbeknownst to my wildest imagination. They had exactly what I needed and the price was right, so that's all 5-star action for me. SDM must stand for super duper magic. Or at least it should.

And it always seems, even if you don't think it, that these projects appear. I came in looking for: scissors, shims (uneven floors, I'm rolling off the bed!), an exacto knife (apparently lacking all sharp objects when we moved), cleaning supplies and an extension cord/power strip. I was successful in finding all but the shims (surprising, isn't' every flat in London uneven?) -- but found some of those furniture felt pads that should do the trick. The man that helped me was quite nice. Very helpful in leading me around the store on the "shim" mission and showed me downstairs to the lumber area, where they will not cut...but will provide you the saw to cut for yourself. Fair enough. Decent shop for most of your small project needs, including an entire paint section when you feel so inspired!

Oy Vey! Sunday morning, off to India in 6 hours for 3 weeks and realised that I needed some keys…read moremade for a friend, so my mail wouldn't pile up in my building lobby and provide some sort of indicator to probing burglars. Don't fear, Rose's was here! Firstly, I was thankful to find somewhere to get keys cut on a Sunday. Secondly, the staff were really nice and they did a fantastic job cutting key copies where other key cutters had failed. I now visit this shop to get all sorts of hardware and home needs. They carry some particularly lethal drain unclogger which is so strong it is sold in a thick plastic bottle within a heavy cardboard box. The guys here are quite helpful, highly recommended shop!

I've been here several times for all kinds of help with my little flat, from hanging pictures to sorting out shelves in my bathroom, the A Bradbury fella are always there with the advice and tools that I need. It's not that expensive but it is a small shop so don't expect t find everything you need to build a house here, just the bits to fix it. A Bradbury's has been on Broadway Market for decades and you'll see photos of the store in the 70s hanging up by the till. It's an institution!

Glickman's is, hands down, my favourite Jewish owned, Muslim operated hardware/homeware shop in London. It helps that it's steps from my flat, but then that's exactly what makes shops like this handy and loveable, non? My entire kitchen is fitted in a combination of Glickmans and the Watney Market Charity Shop. I wouldn't have it any other way. The real payoff, though, are the staff, who are so quietly charming it nearly breaks my heart. I always want to chat more but then I wonder if I might be crossing some kind of line. No matter. I know we're good friends, and they know by the frequency of my visits that I value them endlessly.

I recently bought some screws from surly staff slouched over the counter looking visibly resentful of customers' presence, while others sidled in and out whispering conspiratorially. It felt like a comedy sketch. When I challenged the sweeping declaration made by the assistant about a particular product ('they're all like this' he said), he began interrogating me about how long I had lived in the Barbican, before seriously claiming he knew he was right because he had worked at the shop 'since before the Barbican was built' which was clearly impossible. The guy also failed to provide a receipt (ok, my fault for not asking)! If you want to hear unreformed macho bluff and bluster by knowall white vanmen who assume you're an idiot - the kind of encounter sent up so successfully by comedians Harry and Paul in the hifi shop and perhaps inspired by City Hardware - this is your kind of place. On the other hand, if you're polite, or female (or both), and just want friendly intelligent service, then beware. A bit of banter is fine, Paul, but the days of service like this are surely numbered.

RD charged me for four items and for their express delivery as part of a larger order earlier this month. The lanterns did not arrive. yet I was charged for their delivery. More disingenuously, RD's online communication and receipt pretended that the order had been made. When I complained by telephone and email I was assured that I would be reimbursed for the missing items. TEN DAYS ON, I am still waiting for my money.
