Great stores which almost always have what you need, generally downstairs. Sensible prices but a really wide selection of useful stuff.

Having raided my Mum's charity pile, I found some lovely wooden tea light holders which could do…read morewith a new lease of life. So off I popped down to this DIY store. I have been here once before to pick up some very reasonably priced flower pots and compost. I had a list of three different colour paints, masking tape, craft brushes and sandpaper. Alike all DIY shops, this one was just as overwhelming, however, a member of staff was conveniently located in the front of the store. All you have to say is "sandpaper, please" and they will take you to the exact location. I listed all of my items one by one and was directed to them within seconds. There are many types of items to choose from, different brands and different budgets, to suit everyone. Located at the back of the store were a few shelves containing paint pots, but not the sample pots I required. I asked the kind gentleman whether they did any other paint, and to my surprise they had their very own mixing machine! I chose from hundreds of colours and they were able to whip the paint up in a jiffy. On the final pot of paint the machine decided to pack up! The staff were so friendly and kept apologising while they fixed the machine. I didn't mind waiting the extra ten minutes as they were very chatty - and I learnt how to purge a mixing machine! The three pots of 250ml paint came to just over £10 which is quite reasonable in my opinion. 6 craft brushes, 3 sheets of different roughness sandpapers, a roll of masking tape and 3 pots of 250ml paint equated to just over £16! I prefer to support local and independent businesses rather than going to the bigger 'super stores' and this store have done themselves proud. I received excellent service and at a great price. I'd definitely recommend this DIY shop to anybody! This e-mail is intended for the addressee only. Bit shocked by the previous review as I have found these guys to be very informative and helpful…read morewhen asked about anything. The have a good stock of a wide range of products for such a small store and have generally been able to point me in the direction of what I wanted when I wanted it. In terms of product quality, you get what you pay for, especially with DIY products - I have learned that lesson many times in the past, so the blame can't really lie with the vendor, more with the manufacturer and brand. Anyway, this place is quite expensive, but being in the centre of London what can you expect? Is a decent go-to place for urgent materials, but if you can get yourself to a bigger store to get your stuff, do so.

Oh dear! I think I need to review my review!…read more Today I went back to Leyland SDM to pick up various bits and bobs we needed to fit our new kitchen. The shop IS really well stocked, but for some reason, the staff were terrible today. They were rude, uninterested and one of them suggested the wrong thing for me twice(!) I am so glad I called my other half to check!! As I was paying, I realised they had undercharged me by quite a lot (they wanted £11 instead of £35) I told the man at the till that I think he undercharged me, as I didn't want him to get in trouble. I wish I didn't bother!!* At first he was really touchy and rude about it (!) he then he said he'd give me a £15 discount for being honest (yay!) this turned out to be a 15% off discount, that he didn't manage to work properly...so he only reduced my bill by 81p. Ah well. *If that happens again, I'll keep quiet and be dishonest... as long as my tendency to blush doesn't give me away!!

Two minutes walk from Camden tube station, this hardware store is an absolute treasure trove of all…read morethe things you could possibly need for any home DIY. They stock everything including nails, nuts, screws and plates of every size, twine, cord, rope and wire, paints, varnishes, glues and grout, brushes, dowel, hardboard, literally e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. They also have a paint mixing service and downstairs they also stock bathroom and plumbing accessories, shower heads and radiators. Its really fun to wonder round and look at all the bits and bobs that people need at home. They have buckets or baskets to collect what you need as you tour the shop floor, and if you don't really know what you need, the guys that run the place are friendly and approachable, so even though they look like big men - don't be scared, they really are nice and helpful.
