Starbucks - Venti Iced PSL (2023)

Starbucks at St Stephen's Shopping Centre is located on the upper level of the shopping centre, in…read morethe city centre of Hull. The interior is fairly modern, the window seats have nice views of the shopping centre below, and there's mainly comfortable seating, although I do think the overall size is just not adequate, considering this is the only Starbucks in the city centre that isn't in the train station, so it does get very busy. I ordered a Venti Iced PSL via the mobile app, there was a reasonably long wait for my drinks, and the waiting area felt very cramped, but they were busy. My drink tasted good and was up to a reasonable standard, although it did cost a little more than usual as this is a franchise location, it worked out 40 p more compared to a corporate-owned store, this can add up if you visit a lot and buy multiple drinks. Due to being located inside the shopping centre, they do close fairly early at 7 pm, the only other Starbucks nearby would be located inside the train station, but even then they're only open until 8 pm and don't accept Starbucks cards for payment. 3* - Decent Starbucks, yet very busy. Definitely could do with an extra store in the city centre to take the load of this one, which will likely make the experience better across the board.

You'll find this kebab van just across the street from Christ Church. We popped on over around…read more10ish at night for we wanted something quick and good. There were a couple of guys standing there before us, so we waited. I put my order in for some chicken kebabs and salad loaded with lots of everything and anything. The guys were nice too. Oh and a funny side note, as I was getting out a couple quid for our late night snack, a guy who was standing a few feet away asked "Is that a fast pass?" I looked up and said "Sorry??" Turns out the guy just moved to Oxford from San Francisco 2 months earlier! Whaaaaa? He saw my Muni Fast Pass in my wallet which cracked me up! And even more funny is that he lived maybe 10 blocks from me in my neighborhood ... oh man seriously? Do I have to go to another country to find a random person who used to live in the Sunset???? I can't find anyone in San Francisco who lives in the Sunset. Crazy. We chit chatted a bit ... super nice guy. Awesome and totally random to meet a local San Franciscan at a kebab van at 10pm in Oxford! Back to the food ... we arrived home and I dug it. One bite and I was in heaven. I said "This is soooooooooo good" as I had sauce running down my face. Everything was perfect. They were super generous with their portions and this little lady ate it all. If there's anything I miss about England apart from the breakfast are the kebabs at 10pm. Yes, there is good food in England ... it does exist!! Great spot for those late nights staggering home from the pub pissed as hell and you have just a couple quid left in your pocket.

Right. Five stars…read more Seriously? Yes. But here's the thing. This is a KEBAB VAN. This is probably the best kebab van you'll ever find. Seriously. I've been there for dinner. DON'T: get the normal kebabby stuff. DO: get the Gosht curry. The Kofta kebab. The shish. Anything they have to cook. they do this garlic yogurt mint sauce that will blow your salad cream back to the factory it came from. They'll put up with you no matter how drunk you are. Or how sober. NOTE: this is the van just outside of the church OFF of St Aldate's on Pembroke Square. Do NOT go to the dodgy van just outside of CC as you'll... well, things that should be solid, won't. For a while.

Vascos Tapas & Pintxo Bar

Vascos Tapas & Pintxo Bar

Formerly Scarlett cafe, Vascos is a well-decorated and atmospheric tapas and pintxo bar located in…read moreHull's old town, just outside of Princes Quay. It's cozy, humbly lit, and full of warmth and color, with a beautiful shade of red and streamlined furnishing dominating its decor. The tapas-style menu is perfect for a speedy bite before (or after) a film, but diners and drinkers can also happily lounge for hours. The kitchen is open, and you can watch your meals being prepared. They have an outdoor seating area which is great for socialising. The dishes are simple and traditional, the spicing unpretentious and straightforward but the ingredients are treated so beautifully that the whole of each dish is far greater than the sum of its parts. You can feast on an aromatic wealth of mouthwatering tapas for hours. The chef is warm and approachable, and has, on numerous occasions, explained to customers what the dishes are. A sample of the menu is always on display in a refridgerated unit. The new waitress that was there recently (I suspect this was her first day as she couldn't find anything) left alot to be desired in the customer services department - yelling at the chef (whom I suspect is the owner) in front of customers and not being very pleasent or positively descriptive when customers asked about the menu - but hopefully this will improve or the wait staff will change. Previous visits were not so disappointing. They have a beautiful coffee machine that does amazing cappuccinos, expressos and the rest, all for a reasonable price. The lagers on offer were of a great variety. The wine list left something to be desired, but the house wine seemed to go down well with my friend - who knows a thing or two about reds. The menu is extensive - from Tapas and Pintxo (Pintxo is a small slice of bread upon which an ingredient or mixture of ingredients is put and held there using a stick) to homemade pizzas made with the freshest ingredients. Everything I have had has been incredibly savory and showed the restraint of Spanish cuisine - it has tons of flavor without hitting you over the head with spices. I have tried numerous dishes there, and for the tapas I found the meatballs the best dish. The olives served are proper Spanish olives, and none of that tinned stuff some places give you. I had a pizza there recently that was one the freshest thin crust pizzas I have ever had. They even have a breakfast menu, and cater to vegetarians. Despite living nearby, I have yet to experience Vascos for drinking on an evening, but I suspect that the atmosphere is lively (there is a small stage) and the drinks are flowing.
