I am so happy that I found this place when I googled places to stay. Cheryl was solo since her husband was on a trip. She didn't miss a beat in taking care of us and any of the other guest. She is an excellent cook! The pictures on the website do not do it justice on how beautiful the mountains are in the backyard. There is an abundance of deer to sit and enjoy in the evenings. For a bed & breakfast, we could not have asked for more. The lady can cook! What else could one expect from a delightful southern belle. Not to give too much away ... but read the chapter 16 of the Book of Acts of the Apostles to get a feel for the divine hospitality we experienced from our gracious hostess. She gave us the history of the area which allowed us to treasure our visits to the museums in town. It has made a valiant attempt to rebrand itself as LYH. That trip back down memory lane of the struggles endured by the growing pains of our people, our country, our self-worth made us appreciate from whence we have come. The House of Lydia gave us the privacy we needed. I am glad that the Good Lord knows what to provide to keep the fire in our marriage roaring. The huge antique bed & luxurious, spacious bathroom with custom Jacuzzi made our 34th anniversary getaway memorable for sure.

(And the neighborhood has other gems to see if you take a walk around.) We stayed in the 1 Corinthians room, with my significant other loving the air jet bath. And while I'm not very tall, I could readily see someone who typically struggles with standard-height shower heads appreciating (if not loving) the rain shower. Owner and host Bonnie was fantastic. She went out of her way to accommodate our breakfast and lodging needs and wants. (Please be sure to tell her not just of any food allergies but also of any strong food preferences so that you can thoroughly enjoy breakfast.) She makes it a point to use organic ingredients, and there's plenty to eat. (I had so much to eat during the first breakfast that I skipped my lunch and almost could have skipped dinner.) It's obvious that Bonnie cares a lot about her guests. There's so much more that I could write, but I hope that this gives you a good idea. Get your reservation in; you won't be disappointed.

We arrived early to get our champagne and walk around the property, which is gorgeous. We were seated in a private dining area, with special menus that said "Happy Birthday", since I let them know I was celebrating there. The service is top notch. But beware, you can't add more guests to your party after a certain time so if anything changes with your reservation, let them know ASAP! The wine pairings with each meal were fabulous. I especially liked trying the ice wine at the end with dessert. I also love that they change the menu and are seasonal! Our menu was dreamy! The first course shrimp and grits had us all licking our plates. We even asked the chef at the end how he made the grits. Perfect!! The next round was an interesting goat cheese and corn soup. Loved the pumpkin seeds with it. Then....the filet. YUMMMM! Now they don't ask you how you like it cooked but we all got rare which was fine. The asparagus was nice with it too. The dessert topped it all off, with a perfect peach compote and almond cake that had us all delighted. Or maybe it was all the wine. Not to be missed is the pipping hot French press coffee we all enjoyed after dinner. Again, superior service, cozy atmosphere, and we enjoyed our convo with the chef afterwards. It was certainly a special occasion for the price, but in my party's opinion, very worth it and a night we will not soon forget.

Servers were cheap with the wine pours. We were greeted with less than a half glass of Champagne which was nice. We requested more champagne and they said they were OUT. Disappointing. We also received less than 1/2 glasses for each course, and it was difficult to get additional amounts for any course. The servers seemed to avoid eye contact. Additional wine could be a simple up charge. Small portions, cheap with the wine, and price value amount to a "7" rating. Ambiance was very nice.

When my husband made the suggestion that we stop overnight in Roanoke on the way to Asheville and…read moresaid that the place to stay (according to the local Reddit threads) was a B&B I was admittedly unsure. We had never stayed at a traditional bed and breakfast and while the idea was charming (I've seen my share of Hallmark movies), thought that the experience was reserved for a different demographic...I thought the rooms were going to be dated and filled with frilly lace, that the dynamic with the owners was going to be awkward, that we would have to engage in forced conversation with other guests. It's not that we're antisocial, on the contrary, I just had a lot of misconceptions swirling around my head. I trust my husband though, he went ahead and booked it. I can't speak highly enough of our experience with Chris, Jayne, and their little pup Jax. When we mentioned that we would be getting to Roanoke a bit earlier than their check-in time, they were available to welcome us with smiling faces. Chris showed us the before/after of the home's renovations and how it was salvaged, the only one of four houses on the block where the other three were condemned. The home itself is gorgeous, they have put a lot of thought and care into how the rooms are decorated - the photos on this Yelp page are outdated, their website (blacklanterninn.com) does a better job of showcasing their beautiful accommodations. Chris and Jayne live on the first floor with 2 rooms and a shared kitchen on the second floor and a suite on the third floor. We were one of only two rooms booked for the evening, we never saw the other couple as they arrived later and left earlier than us - it was like we had the whole place to ourselves. Chris recommended a number of local breweries, bars, and restaurants for us to explore - he pointed out their 2nd floor deck, complete with cozy blankets and a fireplace heater (perfect for us to share a late night glass of wine). We stayed in the Black Lantern Room which was bright and cheerful, it looked like a page straight out of a restoration hardware catalog. The bed was incredibly comfortable and a welcome sight after a 5 hour drive and an afternoon/evening of eating/drinking our way through downtown Roanoke. In the morning we enjoyed a delicious all-organic breakfast crafted by Jayne. We were treated to yogurt sourced from New Hampshire, an incredible gluten-free coffee cake made with sweet potato flour (that Chris has gone on quite the goose chase to track down), and a veggie filled egg frittata on an english muffin with swiss cheese and bacon. I typically have to hide vegetables into my husbands food, but even knowing what was baked into his breakfast he hummed his way through (a sign he is enjoying his meal) the sandwich; we were also treated to Roanoke's own H&C coffee. We enjoyed our breakfast along with the company of Jax and the kind and genuine conversation of Jayne and Chris - they truly put a lot of love into the experience they provide their guests. As we were leaving, Jayne handed us 2 little baggies with locally baked croissants for our 4 1/2 drive down to North Carolina - they really do think of everything. I can't speak highly enough of our short stay here and would absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend the Black Lantern Inn and our gracious hosts to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.
