I am in my mid-thirties and joined this academy about three months ago with no jiu jitsu or martial…read morearts experience. Naturally, I was afraid and unsure of what to expect. If you are in the Escondido area you have to check this place out, my only regret is not starting years ago!! There is a great energy coming from the mats and it all starts with the owner/professor Michael and the other experienced students. I have been welcomed and encouraged with a friendly, positive atmosphere even though this a "no frills" style of jiu jitsu. I feel that even when class is full, I still get the instruction and attention I need as a newer white belt. Safety and cleanliness are top priorities at this gym which was very important to me. The pricing is incredibly reasonable and there has been no pressure for sales or any other extra stuff most gyms try to stick you into buying. If you have any interest in jiu jitsu do your future self a favor and come check out a free week trial at this place and start your jiu jitsu journey today!!

We searched, found this school, and decided to try it out before we made a commitment. My husband and I have been coming to the morning classes and have decided that this is definitely the place to join! The people here and most importantly, the staff is super inviting. Michael, the owner, and Pops are such awesome professors. They take their time to teach you the right way and you can go on your own pace. If anyone is looking for a great jiu jitsu studio for themselves or for their children, this is the place to be! It's a great place to learn with instructors that cater to you and your level no matter if you're a beginner or a black belt. Come check it out!!! Highly recommended!

I'm really torn on this place..so 3 stars seems appropriate…read more I've been looking for a place to get back into boxing training and this place seemed to fit the bill- close to my house, relatively good air flow- huge roll up windows, and a wide variety of classes after 5pm which works really well with my schedule. They have a website so I emailed them, but never heard back. Meh, ok...no big deal. I called but the voicemail doesn't match the name of the establishment...but I did receive a voicemail and then a text from someone named Johnny (there are two Johnny's at this place so I'm not sure which one I texted with). We exchanged a few texts and I told him what I was looking for- boxing training/classes and I wanted to check out/watch a class...and he told me to come in on Monday at 5pm or 6pm. So, I went in at 4:50 on Monday...lo and behold....there's no boxing until 6pm, so I have no idea why I was told to come in at 5pm. Anyway...I hung around for a bit, spoke to Johnny (not sure if this was the same person I texted with), and received a class schedule. I was sort of sour on this place after that, but decided to give it a shot. Let me rate the class- the class is good. Coach Johnny (not the person who I spoke to about membership) ran the class and it was a solid boxing technique class. Having been in the fitness industry for years prior to covid, there were a few things concerning to me...like no cool down or stretching after class and no safety cues during the class...but I don't think most people would notice it. Newcomers are separated from the main class but once Coach Oliver saw I had experience, he told me to join the class. Membership is 125/m which is on par with other speciality training centers. I ultimately decided not to join for several reasons- while their paperwork to join was pretty standard like release of liability, 30 days notice to cancel....all standard....there was no option to 'pause' your membership for a medical reason. Also, the area surrounding the club gets sketchy at night. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking to my car after class alone after the time change. My search continues.....

I am interested in learning if there are "weapons" classes as that might be a way for me to return to the mat and work on movement, balance and strength (to work within my current abilities @73. Regarding recommendations I have attend a number of dojos and found Sensei Kevin to be less "martial" and more "artist" (non -aggressive, safety and cooperation oriented, I never left class with my wrists in pain like I had from other more aggressive dojos. I found AofE a great place for me to learn and feel safe.

Having come from another Aikido Dojo I watched several classes at the Aikido of Escondido Dojo…read morebefore joining. Now after several months as a member I can say that I made a good choice. From the first time I went to look into the dojo I was approached in a friendly manner and right away made to feel welcome. Since joining I have found every one to be interested in knowing your name and eagerly welcoming you to participate in the classes. Sensei Kelleher has a professional and approachable teaching style where he is able to demonstrate techniques and communicate instructions well. Sensei is an expert in Aikido who also hosts an awareness of other Martial Arts where he can easily differentiate Aikido from them. Sensei and all the instructors are very safety conscious and always aware of the student's abilities and progress. I like the fact that Aikido is a martial art of body and mind where you not only get a good work out, discipline and traditions are an important part of the training. In this dojo these qualities are integrated into the dojo culture in such a way to help you develop as a person as well as someone who practices Aikido. For me the Aikido of Escondido Dojo is a great place to learn and practice Aikido. ~Brett
