Older Hotel with a lot of character built in the early 1900's. It's in a terrific location, particularly if you are going to take the ferry to Cumberland Island. It's got some great history and real character. Internet for computer worked but harder to connect for iPhones/Tablets. Individual room AC worked well. Lobby is crowded with memorabilia. A cat and dog (both friendly) roam the place. Owners were comfortable with the lobby door open (for breeze) or closed. The rooms are a little small, but the bathroom with our room was clean and updated: lovely tile, plenty of hot water. The bar, though, is not to be missed. Comfortable, well-stocked, every inch of the walls covered in old advertisements or wise-guy signs. Cindy, the Queen, runs the place. Cindy is a piece of work, trading hilarious foul-mouthed insults with the regulars, loudly, but without malice. She's a force of nature and not to be missed.

Such a gem! Sitting right on the river! We had no idea what to expect when arriving since it was our first visit to St. Mary's, GA, but we will not stay anywhere else! Our stay was perfect. Very quiet hotel, beautifully preserved historic building, comfortable room, all the amenities you need, lunch packed and ready for heading over to Cumberland Island, great hotel staff, and the Saloon was fun! Hilarious bartender and pretty good food.

Dude. I am all about cool, old places with character... but our room was gross. Not comfortable at all. The mattress was AWFUL, the sheets were not clean and they gave us a USED bottle of shampoo. We will never come back, sadly.

Hotel from the 1916 all original from that time, you go in and you smell the antique.. room with two beds small no to comfy but to sleep one night is ok.. bathroom clean except for the bath tub has hairs all over.. the place is enough if you are going to be only one day like I did

I was told that the Sure Stay hotel the better of my options for a short stay.. well, after the warm reception I (and my Vietnam vet colleague) got, both at the Sure Stay and the VFW here in Kingsland (a short distance from the Sure Stay), I went home to Charleston, SC, checked on what it would cost to move to St. Marys, called the relators here, located an apartment (that wasn't "quite" ready), and moved lock stock and barrel. I booked into the Sure Stay for the duration of my wait for the apartment. Besides the wonderful breakfasts that were included in the room rate, having the cocktail lounge, "The Breeze", with their menu of bar foods, made it so I didn't really HAVE to go out for dinner. my stay at the Sure Stay got extended a couple of times because of problems that came up with the apartment, but it didn't bother me a bit; after a week I felt like family at the Sure Stay. I still visit the Breeze once a week and I'm greeted by the Sure Stay employees as if I never left. My Vietnam vet colleagues have come from out of state to visit and I put them in the Sure Stay. Thank You Best Western. Butch J

For the cost, do not expect the staff to go above and beyond at all. They stand around in the kitchen and must be sought out for assistance, never proactive. It's a very serve yourself type of atmosphere .The porch area is rarely attended to and dirt, with the interior furniture is ripped, tattered and worn. The food is nothing special and you are herded out of the communal eating area when time is up. You are your own bartender, as there is no one to offer you a drink. The service is subpar at best and there is very little attention to detail. There were older folks who couldn't bike and climb the dunes to get to the beach and they would not drive these people in the truck to the beach, which would be a nice option to accommodate those who need help to enjoy the island. I am glad I went, but not worth the cost they charge. nothing special, IMO.

Everything is slightly run down but lovely and feel free to help yourself (bicycles, kayaks, fishing rods). Also, ticks. Also, the chef from the glory days is still on the payroll so the food is AWESOMEBALLS. Also, would you mind kicking in...say the cost of a small car...to offset the expenses? The insects, especially in summer, can be a bit much. Did I mention the ticks? Also every other bug that can bite your ankles and calves will. Everything itches. I actually entertained (and then discarded) the thesis that the lovely Ferguson family are in fact the prisoners of giant insects, who obligate the family to bring human guests to the house so that the smaller insects can harvest their blood while they walk the property (no bugs in the house, thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster). At least in the summertime [Recall that these homes were winter residences, so I imagine that it isn't anywhere near as bad if one visits at the time of year that the property was originally intended to be used]. Unlimited beverages (except alcohol - your hosts aren't _that_ generous, regardless of your contribution). The amazing food - or at least a part of it - comes from the garden maintained by the staff. Also lovely flowers. Coffee is meh and this is a significant black mark. COFFEE IS MEH. If it wasn't for the AMAZEBALLS food, the slightly run down everything and the bugs, this place would be super cool for a friend's house (even grandchild of faded industrialist friend) but a bit sad for a super-premium price hotel. But the food really is AMAZEBALLS. So there's that. Also service is friendly if a bit hard to find at times. Super nice little touches like a card with tomorrow's weather and tides are sweet. Like being at a friend's house the folks here are happy to drag you around the very scenic island to see the marsh animals and the various ruins of the island's glory days. Social distancing like a boss out here on the island. These guys are trying super hard on that score. The beach is huge and almost empty. Very shallow and pleasant coastline. Also, random piles of horse manure from the wild horses (the staff will remove particularly egregious examples when too close to the house). The horses just hang out everywhere. You can't ride them. They are slightly scary. Highlight for me? Playing chess in the sitting room. Everything is suitably old and lovely.

It looks like a nice, quaint hotel from a distance, but with the exception of very few people, this…read moreplace is nothing more than a roach- and flea-infested drug distribution center. They offer smoking and non-smoking rooms, but even the non-smoking rooms reek like smoke because they don't enforce their own non-smoking policy, leaving non-smokers to put up with the smell of smoke because they have so few rooms left that are truly "smoke-free." The majority of the "guests" are permanent residents, who pay by the week or two, some of whom have been there as long as five to seven years. In order for the single-night guests to not be "mixed" in with the long-term residents, they are deliberately placed in the front of the hotel only, where it is the hottest and noisiest. This way, they can supposedly be shielded from the activities that take place in the back of the hotel, such as drug use/deals, drunk and disorderly conduct, domestic disputes, etc. This might be why the police are called to the hotel almost every night, and sometimes more than once a night. If you have a problem, don't expect anything to be done about it. Neither the staff nor the manager seem interested in making your stay comfortable. They don't even offer cleaning services! Many of the permanent residents have dogs, in some cases more than one, and there is dog crap everywhere in the grass around the pool and gazebo, and in the picnic area. It's like a poop minefield everywhere there is grass because no one picks up after their dogs, and it smells like dog crap, everywhere. It even smells like animal urine right outside the office and in the breezeway between the buildings, ALL the time. There are children running everywhere, day and night, making all kinds of noise, and I heard that some children even go door-to-door asking for money for snacks! I've personally noticed some children being rude and disrespectful to adults while their parents did nothing about it. There is a small grocery store that is very convenient - when it has the things you need - but it runs out of many of the most popular items often, and they only restock once a week, so if you don't get there, or aren't staying there, right after they restock, you might as well just go to the store and stock up on groceries. The people who suffer however, are the ones who live there and don't have a car. The prices are so high on some items that it hurts many of the permanent residents who are on welfare/EBT and can't get to the store. They even charge for toilet paper here! This area is certainly not lacking in hotels/motels, so if you are planning a trip to this area, do yourself a favor, even of you have to pay a little more, stay somewhere else. By the way, the Cumberland Inn & Suites in St. Marys and the Best Western in Kingsland are owned by the same [non-American] company as this lodge is, so you are likely to encounter similar deficiencies at those hotels as well.
