I can't say enough about how wonderful and competent Dr. Kathleen and the tech James and the other staff were in saving our cat's life after he ate rat poison! They worked us in when they had other patients, stayed after hours, and calmly and knowledgeably handled our combative cat when we were exhausted and stressed. We had a cat emergency, and the closest emergency vet open that day was in Durango (we live down the highway in Cortez). They were able to fit us in within an hour and a half (I explained it would take an hour to drive there). The receptionist, nurse, and doctor were all professional, kind, and empathetic. And got our little Gremlin back to his normal rambunctious self in no time! While it's a little but of a drive, I think I'd like to make this our new permanent vet for all of our fur-babies. read more

Business over animal care. INAPPROPRIATE by veterinary standards: I did not bring my dog for emergency/urgent care because she had poopy-pants! She had blood in her feces. Records state 'diarrhea', I even called and requested this be corrected, and nothing was done. I told them there was a hardness in her abdomen, I could feel it. MISDIAGNOSED: 'no mass' recorded by Dr Shawn Clark, he should have a formal complaint thru Colorado regarding license to practice. The fecal test showed negative to every worm/parasite tested. She was 'prescribed' probiotics and dewormer. Never any mention of her weight loss between visits, blood loss, dehydration or pale gums. UNPROFESSIONAL: Poorly managed office, 'mistake on our end' regarding appointment scheduling. INEXCUSABLE: They know who you are by your phone number. I was unable to achieve any consistancy with ever seeing the same doctor. I wanted the same doctor. When I called back to take the first appointment with ANY doctor, my call went unansered. I had to call from another phone to get thru. She was a $2,000 pup and I was treated as though I was indigent and like an over-protective parent. She was 3 year old and there was something wrong with her. I was passed off from doctor to doctor. After my concerns were disregarded and had lack of confidence and trust, I saught care from another veterinary hospital who saw her as soon as I could get her there. She was immediately put on an IV and kept for observation. When she wasnt getting any better, she wasnt strong enough to breath on her own after being operated on for an enlarged spleen. I cant help but think what might have happened if she had gotten care in a timely manner. No compassion, no follow up, no excuse and no reponse to this review is necessary. Please, if you had nothing to say about her death, you can keep it to yourself. Have some respect. I can assure you that you dont want me to pursue this any further. I called these people in the morning with a young cat who needed immediate help. He was still lively and alert. They said the office visit would be $145. I explained if the cost was going to be great that would be a problem. The "receptionist" said to bring him in, they would work with me. I rushed to get there. The dr. said they would like to keep him for a couple days and the cost would be a minimum of $2,000 and that would need to be paid right away. I said, the receptionist told me you would work with me. He said she was mistaken and she was just a receptionist. After $200, they sent me home with a very drugged cat. He never came out of it and died slowly over the next two days. Several things were very wrong about my experience but the death of a three year old cat was devastating. It's ALL about the money. If I could give 10 stars I would. Every experience we had, they have gone above and beyond to make us feel comfortable during this Covid. During his 1st shots we got to see our pup, Yogi, through the window and talk him through! Then a real EMERGENCY happened. Yogi got a hold of a long steak bone swallowed the whole thing! At 5A.M. He woke up crying and vomiting. I knew we had to take him to see someone immediately! So I called the vet and left a voicemail. Dr. Clark called be back 10 minutes later and agreed to meet me ASAP! He ran tests and x-rays and found the issue. Dr. Nollet and the staff then prepared my sweet Yogi for surgery and proceeded with the best course of action! September 20, 2023, we arrived at 10am with a very sick lab. Staff refused to see her, and told us to go to Albuquerque or Moab. THIS VET IS ON THE BAD LIST. NEVER, NEVER GO THERE. I called another vet I found on Google, they had no one on duty right then, but gave us 4 other vets to call locally. The 3rd one, Kindness Animal Care, immediately worked us in and saved our sick girl. read more

If I could give a negative review I would review a negative 10. Main vet is INCREDIBLY rude. He called a grooming salon to give a rabies verification over the phone and insinuated we "did not know math" and other incredibly rude comments. We had spoken to the client prior and explained an email would be suitable as verification but she had called this practice to give the information which was upon their discretion. The team at Riverview were lovely to work with during our pups rough time. From our first phone call to them they asked lots of questions and expressed concern for our pup. They were able to get us in quickly, took time to really get to know our pups history, and showed real care and concern for her. Pricing was clear up front and reasonable, we did not feel any pressure to do tests we weren't comfortable with. We arrived feeling anxious and stressed and left feeling comfortable and confident knowing our pup was getting professional, expert care. Per the condescending reply below, you assumed that I didn't have enough money. I had more than half in cash, and would pay the rest on a card. Again, if it feels like discrimination, it probably is, as now you have taken everything one step further with stating that I didn't have enough money, which was never the case. Your company did not accept my cash. I was asked to go deposit the cash by the man who brought my pet out. He didn't have any paperwork with him. He didn't know what the charges were. He blatantly asked me how much cash I had. WHO DOES THAT?!?! I even offered to put the cash in an envelope so he wouldn't have to touch it to avoid having to go to the bank. I will find another vet that would gladly accept my cash. One who will handle their business with integrity and honesty. You should take a look at my past visits. Considering you didn't do your research as I have been a "client" with you for about three years now and have always paid in full. Money isn't the issue here from my standpoint, the issue is how I was treated from the moment I pulled into the parking lot. As for your comment about severity of Illness, the agreed upon time between me and the receptionist was 1:15. I made an URGENT appointment that morning because my pet was bleeding. It sure seems like the compassion isn't there for you any longer, it's all just routine these days and money makes your world go round. If you have a chronically ill pet this place is way to busy to care for your pet properly. The vets won't return your calls in urgent situation- might even take a few days- and then will have their techs play middle men "as the vets are too busy to talk right now." We were very disappointed after our last interaction and will be moving our pets from this clinic. Medication refills were a headache 50% of the time. During a road trip our Otis took a turn for the worse. We were desperate to get care for him but the local vets were all closing. The compassionate people at Riverview Animal Hospital said that they would wait for us even though we were 30 minutes away. Our worse fears were confirmed and all we wanted was for Otis to be calm, pain free and in our loving arms during his last moments in life. Dr Randy and Franklin did everything they could to make sure that was the case. We couldn't have asked for a more compassionate, supportive, comforting and reassuring team to help Otis make this transition. We will always be grateful. read more

I will no longer be using Riverview as my vet. I woke up with mild congestion and scratchy throat but within a few hours I started feeling worse. I decided to do a home Covid test and it came back positive. I called them to tell them and they STILL charged me an $80 LATE cancellation fee! So I do the right thing and cancel as to not infect people, and you're going to charge me $80?! Moral of the story, if you have Covid, don't cancel your appt, go in and get everyone sick or else YOU will also be charged $80 for being responsible. I have been going to them for over 15 years- they lost my business. read more

TLDR: go to Bakers Bridge Veterinary Clinic instead, riverview will misdiagnose your dog and take advantage of you. Brought my dog in for a problem with her rear foot as it was bleeding and seemed like there was some sort of bleeding mass there. Waited for 30 minutes and called again after waiting outside for that long. Doctor told me it was some sort of laceration and charged me 170 dollars for some bandages and antibiotics (that I later found for 14 dollars online). I was ok with the price at the time but I wanted a second opinion as I was only told to give her the antibiotics and wait. Went to Bakers Bridge veterinary clinic which was much quicker to see me and didn't make me wait in my car for 30 minutes and much more professional. The doctor asked me very specific questions there and actually seemed to know what they were doing. The previously identified "laceration" was then identified as a mass as I had suspected and the doctor opted for immediate surgery as she said it would not heal well without surgery. Bakers charged me pretty much the same but didn't add on unnecessary things like clipping a dogs hair on an unclippable area and ran a full blood panel. Tried to get a refund for misdiagnosing the dog and they made me jump through hours of holding just so I could talk with the incredibly hostile office manager Mary Ann that only would offer to refund 60 dollars. Moral of the story, don't go here, go to bakers bridge. read more

we've been to this vet a total of 3, maybe 4, times, and will never go again. on top of the complete misdiagnosis, which i'm seeing from other reviews is perhaps commonplace here, dirty exam rooms at early morning appointments, and the pressure experienced at every appointment to proceed with things for our dog that we don't believe in, they've now also let us know they intend to charge us (twice now!) for an appointment we canceled well within policy using their new text service - that apparently doesn't work? who knows. bottom line: there are multiple vets in town - use another one! read more

Arrived at the Airport to discover my pup's rabies was expired (who was flying with me). Being not from the area I was in a tough situation and had time restraints to make the only other flight for the day just a few hours later. I called and Riverview was extremely helpful and understanding. I arrived shortly after they opened and they were able to get my pup in and out in time for me to get back to the airport in time for my next flight. I am from Texas and was camping with family in CO. My dog started becoming extremely I'll. Seemed as though she couldn't breathe, wasn't eating, drinking or using the restroom. I immediately took her back to Farmington thinking it was the high altitude. She didn't get better over night . After taking her to 3 vets in Farmington on 4th of July weekend, and being turned away, either because I wasn't a client (remember I was traveling) or they were at capacity, I called Riverview. The staff was extremely nice and willing to help. I was informed there may be a wait but I made the hour drive anyway. My Roxy needed help. Come to find out she had a blood clot in her lung and had a birth defect we didn't know about where her organs were all out of place and up in her chest. We ended up having to put her down. I will always remember Dr. Karen and her staff. They never once rushed me to make any decisions. They kept Roxy comfortable until my family could come and say goodbye, even allowed us to say goodbye in the grass outside since Roxy was very nervous about vet rooms. When everyone else turned me away with no compassion at all for my poor dog who couldn't breathe these folks helped her instantly. They knew immediately something was wrong. I will always remember how the staff treated me and my Roxy and if I ever need a vet in the area again, I will be back. read more

Probably the best vet hospital any pet owner could find! I was taking my cat Izzy there for Urinary tract infections! Had gotten meds for him but it didn't work for him ! So surgery was scheduled! Unfortunately it wasn't what I expected! I had to let him go due to high cost for more extensive surgery at another vet of which I could not afford! Dr Shawn is incompetent. I brought my dog to see him because her ears are infested with ticks. I'm not a Dr and I'm not from this area but I am a nurse and was able to find out what she has called otobias megnini which I guess is very common in the southwest. I pulled 30 ticks out of each of her ears the night prior to our appt. These ticks are not in her outer ear... They are deep down in her ear canal. I do not have the tools to be able to get the deeper ones out, this is why I brought her in. There was no mention of ticks in her ears. He only prescribed some anti bacterial, antifungal, steroid drops which is great but does not cure the problem. We got home from our appt and she still has living ticks crawling out of her ears. I don't think he even looked in her ears! She is the most docile dog too so II know she wasn't resisting him This type of tick is transmissable to humans and I have 3 kids at home. I am very disappointed in her care and now I have to take her to another vet to get her the help she needs. Don't bring your pet here! read more

A couple of reasons for my 1 star review 1. Price and inconsistency with price quotes 2. Lack of consideration 3. Timeliness I arrived at my wellness exam appointment 5 minutes early, as I believe it is important to be punctual. I sat in the waiting room with my nervous puppy and waited until my appointment was 15 minutes late to ask when I might be seen. I was then told that there were no rooms available so I would be taken to a "special room". This special room ended up being a storage shed to the side of the building with a two couches. The room smelled awful and appeared as though it had not been cleaned in a couple of years. I was concerned about my dog receiving her vaccines in such a dirty space. The appointment started here, where I ended up being misquoted for my dog's wellness appointment because there wasn't a computer to look pricing up on. I finally told the doctor that I was very uncomfortable in this dirty shed. She told me we could go back inside and she would examine my dog in the lobby. When we got back inside a room opened up and they rushed my dog in without cleaning the room. After the doctor examined my dog I got the bill for her wellness exam of $614. The blood work panel they had done they underquoted me by $50 and they added on tests that I had no asked for. When I brought this to the vet tech's attention she immediately removed the tests I did not ask for but refused to talk about the fact that the blood work was under quoted by $50. All in all I felt like I was a chunk of change to Riverview and they had no care in the world about my dog. This was quite a shock to me as I came from a vet that would truly tell me if he thought something was unnecessary for my dog rather than trying to put in charges for tests I never asked for. When I explained that this visit was absolutely terribly no one asked how they could have done better or what they could do to make it better. We were in Durango visiting my son with our 2 dogs. One of our dogs who had a very aggressive cancer had taken a turn for the worse and we felt that the compassionate decision was to have her put to sleep. Dr. Katie and vet assistant Alex were so incredibly caring and compassionate to all of us. They gave us all the time we needed with our sweet pup and were supportive of us during this sad time. Even though we live in the Denver area, they sent the sweetest sympathy card that warmed our hearts. I will always be thankful for their kindness and how they helped Meka over the rainbow bridge in such a peaceful and loving way. read more

A travelers worst nightmare is when their animal becomes ill. Although we live here in the summer almost all of the care for my dogs is done in California. Vet in Bayfield had seen my female many years ago. When I called in a panic they said they could not see her. They recommended Riverview. Thank goodness they were able to treat my girl and she recovered fully. Very nice staff (was so busy first thing in the morning) were kind and welcoming. Traveling from CA with our elderly dog we had a medical emergency. They were able to fit us in on short notice and were so nice and caring. They took extra time to print out information that pertained to our dogs issue and printed out the blood test and notes for us to take to our regular vet once we were back home. Riverview Animal Hospital is truly a place of compassion that I didn't think still existed. I wish I lived closer because this is where I would take all my babies! I was in town on vacation when my dog, Gus became super sick after eating mushrooms on a hike. It was getting kind of late in the day so I was really worried we wouldn't be able to find a vet that was open. I called around trying to find a place that could see us but was turned away multiple times because they were too busy. I called Riverview Animal Hospital and they were completely booked but told me that it was urgent and to head over as soon as possible. Everyone was extremely kind and treated us so well. I was amazed at the fact that they were busy and yet the doctor was so patient, explaining everything so thoroughly and reviewing the labs, medications and plan of care. We were in and out of there pretty quickly and thank goodness Gus ended up being okay after some treatment. We were in Durango for a long weekend when our dog became pretty ill late on a Sunday afternoon. We wanted to be cautious since we were driving home the next day and Riverview was the only open vet in town. We arrived about an hour before closing and were greeted by the most friendly staff we have ever encountered at a vet's office. We were seen promptly by a doctor who rearranged her surgery schedule to see us. We received some of the friendliest, most thorough and thoughtful care for our girl - so much so that this experience actually made us wish we lived closer so we could change our primary care doctors. read more

Irresponsible charges. Example: 2 view X-ray, $255. This is the most you should pay for SEDATED imaging rather than standard imaging. Lab draw: $225, a full chemistry panel+ should be in the $100 range at most. Meds, I was sold one tab of Cerenia 60mg for $23.99. This is what RETAIL cost is for FOUR tabs of 60mg Cerenia. I could go on with items on my bill but you get the picture. Bayfield Animal Hospital tried to induce labor on my dog, drew labs, and did an EMERGENCY C-section with spay for $460. Riverview charged me $900 for labs, 2 tablets, a subcutaneous fluid bolus and a couple injections. When you hear of vets piling on charges and going WAY beyond what the standard fees are while pulling your heart strings about your pet.....this is Riverview. I've been referred to Kindness animal hospital for weekend/after hours care. The referrals have come from people with similar experiences with Riverview as myself. Cheers. In response to Riverview, I've seen your daily vs weekend pricing. The daily pricing is almost as far off from the average. Your overall level of care and Veterinarian experience does not exceed others in the area, your charges DO certainly exceed the others. I hope this clarifies your pricing mismatch. read more

we went in to get our dog stitched up from a dog bite. we've never been there before our regular vet was super busy and we needed to get this handled. after waiting for a while we finally got a quote to help her $1200. as we started looking over this estimate and said this is just too much we noticed silly things like they wanted to do bloodwork why do you want to do bloodwork I asked they said because of her age she just needed stitches we weren't there for a complete physical and she's been to her regular vet within the last six months they would not remove the blood work $200 in an attempt to try to get this down. We asked if there's anything we can do to lower the bill and why it was so much, then we were told very rudely because "you people" never pay your bills. excuse me I have cash I could've paid the entire $1200. it would have left us hungry for the rest of the month but I have the money had it been reasonable. amidst the Chaos of this, our regular vet called us back. And said bring her in so we took her back to her normal vet with emergency charges total cost was only $425 that's a pretty big difference $1200 to $425. These people are rip offs there mean and they're rude I would not recommend them to anybody . read more

Poor service. We found a worm in our dogs stool. We're new to town so we chose these knuckleheads. After charging us $100 to test the dogs for what we already knew was a tape worm they called back and said the results were negative. Say what? We couldn't see a dr until the following week. In the mean time we found another vet to see him the same day and prescribe the medicine. Done. Back to the $100 bill for a test result that was obviously wrong. They would not credit us and said test is only 75% accurate. But what about the visual worm? Poor business sense. After telling a few others about our experience they also said they only would use them in emergency. Not reputable. Find another vet. read more

Our usual vet was abnormally busy, so I brought in my pet to Riverview to be looked at for lethargic behavior and no energy. During his exam, while I was in the back room with the vet, I noticed that scattered on the wood floor were numerous, small drops of blood. Next, I noticed the vets lax candor, jovial attitude, his extremely red and watery eyes and his lack of coordination. He then drew blood from my pet and performed the glucose level test, wiping the excess blood off of the machine with his finger, and the entire time, not wearing gloves. They gave him the blood glucose test and were about to send him out the door when I asked for a blood test for his levels. They told me they would have the results back later and I could leave. I thought it was strange that I left before the results were back, but my wife received a rather blunt call saying, "your pet has kidney failure and is dying." We then returned to our usual vet and after some fluids, he is back to his old self. read more

When I moved here in January 2012, my dog Quincy had issues. It turned out he needed his spleen to be removed. Dr. Stacee was amazing through this whole process and the hospital was great with working around my work schedule (I was new and obviously couldn't be gone a lot). After a while, I switched to Dr. Randy because he was available when I needed to schedule another appointment for Quincy. I would be happy if he saw either vet. I've stuck with Riverview the entire time I've lived in Durango and when Quincy and I move to Denver, they will be missed. I've already talked to them about the move, and they are going to recommend someone up there for us to see. They have always been very helpful and treat Quincy as if he were their own. Our standard poodle Jobey tore his ACL playing in a dog park shortly after we arrived in Durango. Dr. Hays called us back immediately and gave us good instruction that evening until we could come to the clinic for an exam the next day. The staff was excellent. Being new to town we needed to find a vet because our Bella was in need of some help. We saw Dr Stacee and she was wonderful. We have a long road ahead of us to get Bella back to herself due to a misdiagnosis from another vet 3 months ago. We feel confident that under Dr Stacee's care Bella is going to be altogether better. IF YOU HAVE A PET AND LIVE IN DURANGO PLEASE READ!!! If you have a pet and you live in Durango, DO NOT, go to the Riverview Animal Hospital. I just had the worst experience and was completely taken advantage of. Around noon today Max (my black cat, love of my life) came in from rolling in the dirt outside and was crying uncontrollably dragging his legs. He seemed as if he was in extreme pain and he couldn't stand up. Understandably and instantly I loaded him up in a cat carrier from the basement and took him to the Riverview Animal Hospital. I was obviously hysterical, crying uncontrollably calling my mom every 3 seconds with questions and updates. At the animal hospital they took Max in the back room and shut me in small intake room. About 30 mins later they asked me some questions about his general health and told me they would put together an estimate. They said they wanted to get x rays because he might have been hit by a car and broken his pelvis and they said they wanted to do blood tests and glucose tests because he might be diabetic. I was not at all prepared to put my cat down and sat in that small room by myself trying to wrap my head around saying goodbye to my best friend. After looking over the $760-dollar estimate. They said he was walking and meowing but his foot still seemed tender and he still seemed like he was in complete pain. I told them I needed to think about the costs and talk to my parents as I couldn't pay $760 that instant. After I had talked to my mom and she had advised me to take him home and watch to see if he had gotten worse. I couldn't find my vet tech Tara (I don't actually know what her title was) I searched and then finally asked someone to find her. Once she joined me back in the room I told her I wanted to take Max home, I didn't want the x ray or the blood work. She informed me the x ray was already done. I was shocked. I had not given any sort of consent for treatment. She also went on to say that they were already working on a blood glucose test. This seemed crazy to me as I had not signed the estimate or consent form. I showed her the paperwork estimate where it said that each step of care would be consented to by the owner and it would be taken one step at a time. The paperwork also stated how important communication was. I told her I wanted to know what the x ray said and I wouldn't be consenting to anything else happening to my cat. She then said that I needed to fill out a credit care pay form for the billing basically putting me through a background check to see what kind of payment plan I would be put on. When I refused; she gave me a long lecture about how I had brought my cat in for care and care was given and needed to be a paid for. She stormed out mad at me taking the waiver (which was still unsigned but had my rights and estimate on it), with her and told me again that I needed to fill out the payment plan. At no point did I hint that I wasn't going to pay for the services rendered. When the doctor came into the room, I explain to her how I did not consent and felt completely bullied. She apologized for my "traumatic experience" The x rays showed nothing. The blood glucose test showed nothing. By 1:30 pm they were releasing Max to me and he was jumping off of the counter and standing on his hind legs to reach me. He was completely fine. I'm so grateful that nothing happened to him but I feel like this hospital completely took advantage of the fact that I was upset and tried to push tests on my poor cat quickly that he didn't need. 10 mins into walking into the place he was walking fine but it cost me $336 dollars (intake exam, x rays with 2 angles and pain medicine) to get my perfectly fine cat back today.
