After the first walk through I called them to ask for the quote and instead of returning a call they sent someone out without an appointment and mindlessly measured the length of the sidewalk. This Christmas tree farm is absolutely amazing…read more The whole operation is well thought through. From the moment we walked up we were treated great!!! All the attendants and helpers were so kind and helpful. We followed the crowd to the spot where the tractor picks up customers (this is a very basic tractor wagon pull but it is slow so it didn't feel dangerous) dogs and humans alike piled up and we were on our way to the tree fields! We came with our two pups this year to help pick the perfect tree. We walked around for a litttle while examining allll the trees- white pine and blue spruce. Flat rate for each $100 for while pine which has longer needles that kind of fluff out at the ends and blue spruce that has smaller needles and looks like a "classic" tree. Last year around this time- we visited another Christmas tree farm and all the trees were gone and online younger smaller trees were left.....but here there was simply more space to grow trees and fields full still to pick from! We forgot to bring our own axe or electric chainsaw so we were able to borrow one from another guest. They did hang out simple band chainsaws but in our excitement we forgot to grab one before hopping on the wagon. We found 2 trees we really loved and opted for a shorter more robust white pine :) it was very healthy and sappy and we all loved it! Certainly requires some strong arms so please keep that in mind. We piled the tree on the wagon and hopped on to head back to the area where attendants helped us shake out the dry needles and wrap the tree to make it easily transportable. This whole experience was beyond a dream- so convenient with helpful hands to guide us through the process. BEAUTIFUL healthy trees, and complimentary hot mulled cider! This will be our new spot for our annual tradition from now on!! They also do pumpkins! I attached some pics of the website for more details- If you and your family are looking for a great Christmas tree farm, look no further. I noticed a lot of families with matching pjs so it's a perfect opportunity for a good photoshoot and family memories! We dressed up our puppies in onesies and got some great pics :) Be ready to spend a minimum of $100.

Last April we purchased four maple trees from the Meadows Farms Stafford, VA location and paid…read moreextra to have them professionally installed. Two of the trees showed failing limbs almost immediately. We brought photos to the Stafford store and were told to fertilize--no improvement. We were then told to "wait until next spring." This spring, the same two trees are still struggling. We returned with photos and even performed the "scratch test" they demanded. The staff agreed the trees were in trouble but told us we had to call HQ. After multiple calls, voicemails, and being bounced around departments, we were finally told someone might get back to us in 7-15 days. We paid more at Meadows Farms expecting professionalism and a real warranty. Instead, we got delays, dismissiveness, and a warranty process designed to wear customers down. If I had it to do again, I would have gone to Home Depot or Lowe's--there, you simply bring the receipt back within a year and get a replacement. No hassle, no runaround. Meadows Farms wasted my time, treated us poorly, and did not stand behind their product. I cannot recommend them.

I really like MF over the big box nurseries. They have a good selection of plants, and I've noticed…read morethey are expanding their selection of native plants which is really exciting. The staff is always friendly, helpful and loads my bags of mulch for me. The prices can be a little more than the big box stores, but that's to be expected. I will continue to come here because they know their plants and they are nice!

I called County Farm Service (CFS) to spray our trees for tent caterpillars. CFS sent a…read morerepresentative, Kenny, to look at the property and provide an estimate. I decided to also have him do a perimeter spray. Kenny said that our neighbors across the street would also need to spray, since their trees had caterpillars. I talked to my Home Owners Association and to my neighbor and arranged to have the spraying of the two properties on the same day. Kenny said that for some of the trees, he would not be able to use his truck but would have to carry the spray down the hill to the site because of the steepness of the hill. He did not give us a written estimate, but that is not unusual in this rural area. I arranged to take off work to supervise the spraying. The weather report for that morning said that there was a high likelihood of rain, and the skies had dark rainclouds. I called Kenny, who insisted that it was fine to spray. I refused. There was a substantial rainstorm an hour later. If Kenny had sprayed, it would have been wasted effort. We arranged the spraying for the next day. However, Kenny did not knock on the door or let me know that he was at the house, although I had told him via phone that I was there and my car was in the driveway. I watched some of the spraying from the windows and deck, specifically the spraying around the house. He told me he had already sprayed the trees. I asked if he had finished spraying the neighbor's trees. He then told me that the trees actually belonged to a different absentee neighbor who probably was not going to spray. I asked him why he hadn't told me that before he started work, since I probably would have cancelled the order. He repeated said that the trees did not need to be sprayed--that they always "come back." I asked him why--if the trees did not need to be sprayed--he had done the spraying and charged me for the work. Since he said he had done the spraying, I went ahead and paid him the $350 we had agreed upon. However, as he left, I noticed that there were no footprints or tire tracks going down to the trees with the tent caterpillars. I called Kenny and asked him about this. He admitted that he had NOT sprayed these trees--the whole purpose for my calling County Farm Services! He said the ground was too wet to get his truck down to the trees (although in the estimate, he said he was going to carry the pesticide because it was too steep for the truck). I asked him if he was going to come back to finish the job. He said yes. I called County Farm Services and talked with the branch manager, Don, who said he would look into the situation. I followed up with an email outlining the situation. I had not heard back by Monday mid-morning, so I cancelled the check and sent an email to Don saying that I would be happy to pay the full amount as soon as the work was completed. I asked him to schedule a new appointment to have someone come out and complete the spraying. Having another appointment to complete the work means that I or my husband must stay home from work. It is a considerable inconvenience.

Color Orchids was our second stop on this year's "Culpeper Harvest Days Farm Tour" Saturday. Who…read moreknew that there was a wholesale greenhouse orchid operation right here in Culpeper County? Not us. This was their first year on the tour. From the outside it just looks like your everyday large industrial building, but taking the tour (which ran every hour or so) & passing through the doors into the greenhouses - wow! Two acres of Phalaenopsis orchids in all stages of growth & bloom! The woman giving the tour was very knowledgeable & definitely seemed to enjoy her job/work. In just 7 years, Color Orchids is now one of the largest orchid growers in the United States. Their plants are sold in supermarkets, big-box stores, florists, & even on Amazon. The young plants are initially grown in Taiwan where the growing conditions are perfect for that stage of growth in quantity, then the young plants are shipped to Culpeper where they are grown on until bloom size. While we were there we got to see workers grading (& sometimes tossing) plants for quality along a large conveyor belt, & also got to see the workings of the climate-control system & a few of their patented Phalaenopsis varieties. The tour/talk was very interesting, & they also had a small display of miniature orchids for sale, as well as a raffle going on to win a large planter with around half a dozen Phalaenopsis. (Although I bought six tickets (6/$5), I haven't heard yet so someone else must've walked off with that prize - boo hoo!) Very unfortunately they do not sell to the public from the greenhouse - they are wholesale only except for during the tour. Bottom Line: This was a very interesting & new spot on the farm tour, & if they participate again in future years, we'll visit again.
