The Elephant On The Tyne

There were no staff on Reception, so we meandered our own way through to the back dining room where lunch was being served. It was a shame that lunch was being served in this back room as it is the least attractive of the two rooms; the first room has a wonderful view of the Tyne, with a polished floor, whereas the back room is charmless if functional. The Carvey is set out at one side. A member of staff showed us to a small square table set for two which was wedged in rather too close to other tables for my liking and certainly would not have been where I would have chosen to sit myself. The table was also too high for the chairs and was higher than the 'proper' other dining tables. The food was good. The meat tender, though hubby disappointed that I got the last of the lamb and we were told no more was forthcoming! Oh dear...and it was only 2.15pm...the veg was nicely cooked and the gravy all proper and tasty! It would have been a five star rating if they had only thought more about creating a better ambiance and comfort for their diners...this was by no means the cheapest Sunday lunch to be found and such lovely food really does deserve a nicer setting. Don't spoil the boat for a ha'porth of tar as any of the boating folk next door would have said...

I've stayed at this hotel once, but I've frequented their bar and spa quite a few times. The room…read moreis excellent, lovely furnished with a great flatscreen lcd on the wall; although, I did have trouble with their shoddy remote control. The bathroom was sweet with a lovely shower; but, I did miss having body lotion. Frankly, with an amazing Spa in the hotel, I think more luxury products would be given to entice guests to the Spa. This hotel would get FIVE STARS if not for a few mistakes, that can only be chalked up to mediocre hotel management, excluding their elevator that makes a horrible noise as if it's going to detach and plunge me to my death (please fix that). First of all, there is no access to ice machines, or ice bucket in your room. You must visit the bar for both. You could probably call it up, but that is always a hassle. People at the bar seem like they're forced to be nice to you, but if could have been a bad day. I'd stay at this hotel again and again. I highly recommend it, if not for the tiny fixes to make it a FIVE STAR. The towel warming rack in the bathroom is a nice touch. Please fix the elevator. Lastly, the worst trait of this hotel is the waiter staff during breakfast in the restaurant. My girlfriend and I waited so long for our coffee, tea, and toast that it had to be reordered. Suddenly the reorder comes to our table with black tea instead of green tea. Within seconds later, after a half hour of waiting our original order comes. The waitress is completely confused. In this time, we already ate the self-serve part of our breakfast. Completely and utterly ruined. Still, I would return.

There are loads of bars and restaurants nearby, and it's a 15 minute walk to the city centre (there is also a Quayside electric bus which takes you to the centre, or you can take a taxi from outside the hotel). Now on to the interior...I just love it! It's dark and sensual with a lot of purples. The rooms are spacious, and the suites are fantastic: luxurious comfort is how I would describe it. And those beds?! Amazing night's sleep. My husband is American and it's traditional to host a Rehearsal Dinner before your wedding. We held this is a private dining area in the brasserie and from all the planning to the actual event, I could not have had better service. The food is all made on site by the chef and his/her team, and it was delicious. The spa is really adorable, and a lovely place to come and relax. We had a couple's massage. The staff were extremely professional and I loved chilling out in the relaxation room. 5/5 for everything about this place. We had such a great experience from start to finish.

The owner, Stan, has placed love and hard work into this hotel that he has run for 30yrs and it shows!!! Upon entering, you are greeted by him and his adorable dog, Georgia. He gives you the rundown and introduces you to any friends that may be visiting (once a guest, always a friend). This is the epitome of Newcastles charm. The rooms are named after trees, which being a hippie lover myself, I embraced wholly. Spacious and well stocked with not only the warm-cup essentials, but basics also like toothbrushes and shampoos. Breakfast is included in the price, which is fabulous. Even though we ran out the door quickly the first morning, Stan made sure we took time to eat something that was freshly prepared. How very wonderful this place is. Like a warm hug and ale kisses!! I look forward to many more visits in the future if this is our college of choice. (Crossing fingers)

Come out of the station, turn right and you'll see it. - The rooms were really big, with decent sized bathrooms - The breakfast was included in the room rate and wasn't bad (the croissant wasn't fresh but at least they provided lots of fruit, and lots of tea!!) - They do nice things like leave you complimentary water, juice and a kitkat - The staff were really friendly and helpful I heard a few people mention that their room were noisy when trains arrived/departed, but my room was fine... If I need to stay in Newcastle again I'll definitely come back here.

I sojourned in one of their aptly named "chic-rooms" and could not have been happier. For starters, the location. If you're interested in a Newcastle stay, this hotel will place you in the middle of the action. Situated at the end (beginning?) of Grey Street, you will be only a quick walk from the coach station and near wonderful shops, restaurants, and general action. I actually never made it to the hotel's restaurant, as I was too tempted by what I could see from my window. The rooms' decor is also quite charming, and in keeping with the Georgian sensibilities of the building itself. High ceilings, ensuites, deliciously-comfortable linens and impeccable standards for cleanliness round out the equation. As an added bonus, the in-room radio was delightful. I think it was BBC4 that aired an hour or so of very sweet alternative folk rock with some nice liner notes. Yet another reason to curse Clear Channel for buying up all of our US airways.

LOVELY STAFF. GREAT ROOM…read more I asked for a quiet room and boy did I get one (415). I stayed for three nights and slept like a log each one. Best three nights sleep in ages. Every single member of staff I dealt with was warm, friendly, gracious and super helpful. Everything was excellent but there were a few things missing that, if available, would've made my stay super excellent. -No Room Service: I was staying alone for three nights and didn't like the idea of sitting by myself in the restaurant to eat my meals so room service would've been preferable for me. Because of this, I was spending money elsewhere and bringing food to my room so you lost revenue there. I'm sure a lot of solo travellers probably do this. -No Fridge: I also brought some small snacks and drinks for my stay and there was nowhere to store the things that were required to keep chilled. Real milk (not a fan of hotel UHT milk), pop, wine, salsa, yoghurts, etc. -No Safe: I had to carry my laptop everywhere with me as there was nowhere in the room to secure my high value belongings.

Each room is named for a vintage of wine, which was really cute. The rooms were beautifully appointed and comfortable. We didn't set up for the breakfasts in advance, but we opted for them anyway on the fly. The bar and lounge area are particularly comfortable. After spending the day walking around Newcastle, we brought our party of 6 into the lounge, rearranged the overstuffed leather chairs and coffee tables for our group (the couches were all occupied by couples taking up way more space than they needed) - but put everything back in its proper spot afterward - for a nice nightcap before retiring. The staff was great, the young man tending bar obviously had several duties, but he was there when we went to sleep, and helping out with the breakfast service when we woke up. Even the woman on chamber-maid duties was cheery and friendly. It was a great stay and we highly recommend Hotel du Vin to any staying in the Newcastle area. We'll definitely be back again in the future. One side note to the hotel - you might want to find someplace less prominent to park the big blue cherrypicker.....it kinda detracts from the ambiance of the place.
