I met Dr. Chang at the Hoboken Wellness Crawl back in April 2018. At that time, I had just started medical leave from work due to a severe concussion I got in the summer of 2017 from a nasty fall. The concussion caused temporary paralysis, TMJ, epilepsy, headaches, severe mood swings, sensitivity to light and noise, and difficulty focusing. I was seeing the best neurologists and specialists in New Jersey, and had been prescribed various medications, however, my symptoms were only getting worse. The week before meeting Dr. Chang, my dentist told me that seizures were leading to teeth clenching and I had fractured 2 teeth. I knew something was wrong because I would often say it hurt to talk (my jaw would get tired). When I was told I had TMJ, I saw a PT but with no results. When I met Brian on the Crawl, he did a quick reading and within seconds told me that I clenched. All I could think was woah how did he know?! I had tried acupuncture once before for headaches, but with no results. I thought to give Dr. Chang a try. I was getting desperate to find any relief for my numerous symptoms. After the first visit I stopped clenching immediately! 10 months after the fall and I had no clue how much I was clenching my jaw and the pain it caused. I was on a daily dose of 800 mg Duexis (ibuprofen and famotidine) to battle, or more accurately, hide pain. I stopped taking it that day. I continued to see Dr. Chang who helped with headaches and my ability to focus. When I returned to work, I was shocked at how much easier it was to think! He literally helped my come back from a horrific bicycle crash; took 2 1/2 years of mixed treatments and boy did he work hard with me and put in the time and effort that made the difference for me. The challenge in my case as presented to Dr Chang was not just in treating the physical injuries including head, neck, back, and shoulder, but also the psychological impact of the crash; emotional treatments coupled on top of the physical injuries. For months I saw Dr Chang 2-3x a week then 2x and eventually 1x then a few times monthly to the point now where I'll back for maintenance or other unrelated reasons. Even my wife who was a non-believer and afraid of needles is a true believer and patient. Overall, he is so understanding, caring, and personable as is his spouse. My wife and I through my treatments actually become friends with Dr Chang outside the practice. He really means well and continues to amaze me when I present a different request to address. Acupuncture is not necessarily for everyone, at the very least give it a try and stay away from questionable "quacks". Acupuncture DOES WORK, you might be surprised. If anyone had ever recommended me to see an acupuncturist, I always thought there was no way I would ever try. I had surgery on my left shoulder and bicep then began physical therapy and continued physical therapy for 6 months. I still had chronic pain which limited my performance and affected my daily tasks. So I obtained bunion surgery 2.5 weeks ago. The stitches are out but the pin is still in and sticks out of my skin. The pain from putting the boot on and it pushing the pin constantly into my skin had me walking around in just an ace bandage. I started physical therapy, pure pain, on Monday. Then I decided to see Dr Chang later that day for acu and heat therapy solely on my foot. As a result, about fifteen minutes after the session I DID NOT AT ALL feel the pin in my boot. Over the past year I've suffered with terrible eczema mainly over my hands + fingers. I saw 2 different dermatologists as well as an allergist with no answers or relief. I tried multiple prescription and OTC ointments but was never able to get it under control. Here's the scoop on acupuncture from my personal experience... it totally works. I think it works for some and it doesn't for others but for me, it's so great for stress, my lower back pain and the dreaded allergies!!!! I have a VERY high stress job and getting treated twice a week keeps me sane and it helps me sleep like a baby. The dreaded needles: I hate needles, always have and always will. But, when I finally decided to take the leap and try out acupuncture, it wasn't that bad. I was desperate bc my allergies were terrible a few years ago so I found someone in NYC and it worked! But consistency is key. Who to go see: Here's the thing... there are so many acupuncturists out there. I've tried a few. Some have been pretty good but either their place was just disgusting or their location wasn't convenient for me to go on a regular basis. Then I found Dr. Chang in Hoboken. He's awesome! Classically trained from an 88th generation Daoist priest, which is kinda cool. Apparently, acupuncturists are trained differently. Most are traditional acupuncturists and very few are classically trained, which unfortunately is a dying breed. I don't know the details behind the technique and why classical acupuncture is dying but all I know is from all the ones I've tried, Dr. Chang is great. He's got that healing gift. The office space: His office is right by the path! AWESOME. It's really clean, peaceful and serene, he's really nice and very thoughtful. Listens well and attentive to detail, which I like. And he's ok that I hate needles so he'll take his time when I freak out sometimes. I have had problem for a while with my plantar fasciitis that seems to flare up every now and then. Hi my name is Dee, I'm from Chicago, Illinois, I met Dr. Chang while visiting my sister and brother-in-law in New Jersey. I decided to go with them on a visit for their appointments. Little did I know I would also be seen that day by Dr. Chang. First, I must say one word describes my results. MIRACLE. While treating my sister she asked him did he work with patients that had a torn meniscus? Yes was his response thinking she needed treatment on her knee. She proceeded to inform him that it was her sister. He told her I will take a look at her and help her with the knee problem. To make a long story short, he asked a few questions about my injury and my level of pain. He explained how acupuncture technique works and how he would address my pain . My pain at the time was at a level of 5 on a scale from 1-10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being intolerable. However during the night hours is when I experience my highest level of pain ranging from 10 and no lower than 5. I have been going to physical therapy for 3 months. I have had two injections within one year to help with pain management. Doctors suggest surgery as a final solution with only a guarantee to develop arthritis. Within 5 minutes Dr. Chang began acupuncture and I began walking up and down a flight of stairs in the hallway of his office miraculously experiencing zero pain. Wow, where do I start? After almost a year of failed physical therapy that only made my back pain and spasms worse, I went to Dr. Chang as a last resort. The physical therapy made me lose neck and back mobility and was a complete waste of time and money. I decided I wanted to try another route to fix my problem when I noticed that all the physical therapists were using tools and needles acupuncturists use. I found out about Dr. Chang through Yelp and immediately set up an appointment after reading through his really great reviews. When I first saw Dr. Chang I was in lot of physical and emotional pain from all the back problems I was dealing with for over a year from a workout injury. During our consultation he was very kind and attentive while listening to my whole story. I honestly think he's a miracle worker. He's helped me not only physically, but mentally and spiritually. He's helped me recover from a progressed injury that lasted over a year in a few sessions. Give the healing process some time and go to a few appointments to really see great results. He has a bunch of methods for recovery at his disposal and it's just a matter of seeing what your body needs to heal optimally. If you're scared of the needles, don't be. I came to Dr. Chang after being in a fairly serious car accident, suffering from whiplash and a concussion. He took me in, treated me (suggested I come in 3x/week) and manipulated/took advantage of my fragile mind/body in a time of great vulnerability. Dr. Chang called my personal cell phone 1-2x/week when there was pushback from the car insurance for coverage, desperate to be paid. Instead of being patient and waiting to be rightfully paid through the car insurance claim, he needed the payout *immediately*. His impatience for being paid and need for personal gain casts a great shadow over his potential knowledge of eastern medicine. In addition, his office is not nearly as welcoming as that of other acupuncturists' offices - it is hardly a place to relax. I actually called Sports Acupuncture & Family Wellness seeking a Chinese medication for my dog who was recently diagnosed with cancer (I'm considering all options to help her). I knew it was a long shot as this place is for humans, but with nothing to lose, I called anyhow. Left a voicemail explaining what I was looking for. A day later I received a phone call from Dr. Chang, who unfortunately would not be able to supply what I was looking for, but instead he gave me some very useful names and places I could go to to help my dog (he has 2 dogs himself so clearly understood how important our pets are)! He also provided some helpful info on holistic treatment for her which I greatly appreciated. Needless to say, I would never expect such kindness from a complete stranger. I've never stepped foot into this place, yet Dr. Chang took the time to call and give me valuable information for my pet. He is clearly a compassionate person. After reading all of the reviews I visited Dr Chang. The session started off nicely - very informative. Downhill from there. The walls are so thin - I could hear the session next door as if it was the same room. Not relaxing at all. When the session was over, he started giving me religiously charged advice. Da fuq? And then he threw in some cupping which was way too agressively done and I couldn't turn my head for a week afterward. It was my first time having an acupuncture treatment. Dr. Chang put me at ease, examined me and immediately knew several things about my medical condition that I didn't tell him. Where do I begin...Dr. Chang is the gold standard of patient care and bedside manner. I began seeing Dr. Chang a few weeks ago for general stress relief/relaxation to assist with fertility. I hadn't attempted acupuncture prior to seeing Dr. Chang, and from the moment I walked into his office, I felt completely at ease. My very first appointment began at 5:30pm, and I did not walk out of the office until 8pm - he truly makes you feel like you are the only patient in the office, and sits with you to understand your areas of concern and the things you hope to gain from treatment. He also recommended a few supplements to begin taking, and wrote down the names of several books that he thought I would benefit from reading. Quite honestly, I felt like the appointment was so much more than "acupuncture" - it was so spiritually therapeutic, that it also felt like a mini therapy session! Not only is Dr. Chang such a great listener, but he also provides truly sound and actionable advice. Just after my first appointment with Dr. Chang, I discovered that I have a complex cyst on one of my ovaries (which had been causing me persistent pain for quite a few months), in addition to finding out that my thyroid had become underactive. When I informed Dr. Chang, he went straight into action mode and tailored my acupuncture treatment to help with these issues.
