So pretty when the blue sky is the backdrop of cloud art.
Kim G.

Everywhere you look, there are gorgeous views! Face north up river and see the Hawthorne, Morrison & Steal Bridges with the Moda Center shining red during Blazer games. Look towards the south and Mt. Hood stands proud especially on a blue sky day, and depending how far you down the river you are, it's framed by the Tilikum Bridge. In warmer weather, the Williamette is bustling with boats, kayaks, jet skis, sailboats, paddle boarders, and of course The Spirit of Portland cruises by several times a day/night. In the rainy season, I've seen so many rainbows and double rainbows arching over the boats and river. Nights bring spectacular sunsets, especially on evenings where the sky is dotted with clouds. In the morning, the sky is filled with shades of yellow and orange from the rising sun. The grounds are well kept with hanging baskets of colorful flowers in spring and summer. There are lots of benches welcoming people to sit and just enjoy the beauty. McCormick & Schmick's anchors the south end of the "boardwalk" area with King Tide Fish and Shell (previously Three Degrees) on the north end. Several small shops and restaurants pepper the path - coffee, ice cream, candy, Sushi, Italian food, women's clothing - with many of the restaurants offering outside seating. Personally I wish there were more shops and restaurants on this strip! I've never understood the lack of development. This is such great piece of real estate yet it still leaves a lot to be desired. People have said it's lack of parking, but there are two public spots nearby, some on-street parking, and the street car stops just a block away. This area really comes alive in the summer or on a warm spring / fall day with people flocking the restaurants and walking along the River. Beware the skateboarders, scooters and bikes that ride the path even though there are clearly marked signs directing them to the bike path. Watching the dragon boats practice is one of my favorite pastimes. They are out there mornings and evenings for 3 months before the dragonboat races occur, which is usually the 2nd weekend in June. The boats are so colorful and it's fun to watch these teams compete after practicing so long. On July 4th this is the place to be! The barge for the Portland Fireworks is placed south of the Hawthorne Bridge turning Riverside Marina into front row seats to a spectacular show! The viewing is just fabulous. Spread a blanket or bring your chairs and enjoy! Blues Festival kicks off or ends with the July 4th Fireworks. Even if you don't attend the festival, you can enjoy the music from this area, and not have to fight the crowds. And for two weeks in December, watching the Christmas Ship parade is magical! For several nights the boats meet at Riverplace Marina and sail in a circle around the harbor, twice, before heading up or down the Williamette. Each boat decorated by the owner with colorful lights - there is a fire truck, Santa, Christmas trees, stocking, Jack-in-the-box, old fashioned riverboat, and so much more! This fleet of volunteers bring so much joy and have created a must see holiday tradition for Portland. Look for the schedule and go during this time! For me, Riverside Marina is a special place. There is so much beauty throughout the seasons and a plethora of activity to keep you amused. Even though I wish there were more restaurants and shops, I give it a solid 5 stars.

I miss the days when there were a lot more shops down here. There are still a few and some great restaurants but I do miss the variety of fun little stores. This is a great little boardwalk to walk up and down and usually there are boats out and about. You can walk down to the boats themselves and one of the docks has an actual park bench you can sit on which is pretty far out on the water.

Write about something you love. One year ago, I was filled with nervous anticipation. After ten years of talking about it, luck and timing finally came together and I joined a dragon boat team. The eight boats you see docked at the marina are shared by a hundred teams made up of a fun and sometimes odd assortment of friends, coworkers, high school students and serious paddlers. So starting at the end of March through the Rose Festival in June, you'll see a thousand folks with life vests and paddles heading to the marina from sunrise until sunset. It takes time, dedication and a really strong back. A sense of humor is an absolute must. We'll go out in the blistering sun and pouring rain. Only one practice was canceled last year during a lightning storm. Even then, paddlers showed up only to be turned away. We'll be swamped by powerboats and my arch nemesis, the Willamette Jet Boat, later in the season. I will paddle until it feels like my arms are ready to fall off. Then I'll take a quick break and do it all again. This past Saturday as a collection of teams moved the boats from their winter home at Willamette Park to the marina, all the excitement and nerves flooded back. Initially I was on a boat with paddlers from the Golden Dragons. Every member is over 50 and they have one paddler who is 92. 92!!! And they still had their sense of humor firmly intact. During the spring, the marina feels like my home away from home. It is always fun to have people at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Riverplace Promenade cheer us on as we practice. It would be even better if they bought us a beer afterwards. Hint, hint.

Fred's Marina - Father n law taking me fishing

Wow! Talk about hometown customer service - these folks saved us from what could have been an…read moreabsolutely miserable day! Our guide that I had booked several weeks in advance had a case of the "I'm a wuss and don't want to fish in the rain"-itis and cancelled our trip at 10pm the night BEFORE we were supposed to meet at 6:30am!! To be fair, totalfisherman.com refunded our deposit and fishing licenses. This was no consolation considering my boyfriend and I flew out from Virginia largely to take this fishing trip. I called Fred's Marina around 9am the next morning after fuming and sleeping poorly the night before, and told them our tale of woe. Within five minutes, Tom Burgess of Bigulp Guide services called and said he'd meet us at the Marina in two hours!! We arrived at Fred's - unpretentious and stocked with the basics. The service and people there earn them the 5 plus stars. We were wholly unprepared for the downpour that was awaiting us, so Dave let us borrow two of his rubber rain suits - truly a lifesaver. They bent over backwards to help us negotiate the licensing debacle that had started the tension with the first fishing guide. (you can buy one-day licenses and tags at Fred's...don't bother buying them online prior to fishing!!) Stephanie called ODFW directly and went to bat for us, trying to help with a refund for non-printed but purchased licenses. Anyway, really had a great experience with Fred's service and all-around helpfulness. Wish I had a boat that I could moor there :-) Happy Fishing!

"Fred's Marina Your Gateway to Fun on the Multnomah Channel"…read more This marina has a lot going for it. The location is perfect - on the head of the Multnomah Channel directly off the Willamette River and only 3 miles to Kelly Point on the Columbia River. The Marina is unpretentious filled with fishing boats, sailboats and power boats. It has a little store stocked with the basic necessities from soda pop to hot dogs and maps to bait and is staffed by the nicest family. The bathrooms are spotless! I repeat the bathrooms are SPOTLESS. The gas prices are also more reasonable than some other on the water pumps. Summer moorage and trailer storage is affordable and makes getting out and spending time on the boat so much easier. This is not the place to tie up your yacht or luxury performance boat and expect everyone on the dock to be impressed or even care for that matter. Fred's Marina is simple and feels like old Portland. Well, considering they opened in 1946 and have in been operation by the same family since, it truly is old Portland. My grandparents first brought me to Fred's in the mid 1970's. We would pull up to the dock, chat with the folks about what's biting and who caught what, buy a candy bar and then push off. It's pretty much the same today. Thanks Fred's for keeping it real.
