You call because you need to speak with someone, and instead of being connected to a representative, you're forced to leave a voicemail and wait 24 to 48 hours for someone to contact you. Then, rather than actually calling you, they send a text. You respond to that text with a question or additional information and apparently you're now back at the beginning of the queue, waiting another 24 to 48 hours for a response. This is particularly unacceptable when the issue involves an active claim and legitimate safety concerns regarding your vehicle. Insurance claims are not casual customer service inquiries. People are relying on their insurer to communicate with them when there are potentially significant financial and safety implications. My experience with Melissa N. was especially atrocious. I attempted to communicate directly with her regarding my concerns about the safety of my vehicle and wanted an actual conversation about how those concerns were going to be addressed. Instead, I experienced the same frustrating pattern of limited communication and delayed responses. I was left feeling like my concerns were being filtered through a system designed to avoid actual conversations rather than resolve the underlying issue. Then there is the premium increase. American Family increased my premium by approximately 200%, and I was never given what I consider reasonable personal communication or advance notice regarding such a substantial financial change. A 200% increase is not some small increase it is a significant financial impact on a policyholder. At minimum, I would expect clear communication explaining what changed, why it changed, and what my options were. The cumulative experience has been incredibly disappointing. Between the lack of accessible representatives, 24-48 hour communication cycles, the handling of my vehicle safety concerns, and an enormous premium increase without what I consider adequate communication, I have essentially lost confidence in this company. I am documenting my interactions and looking into what legal and regulatory options may be available as these issues have not been resolved appropriately. I don't expect an insurance company to make every decision I want. I do expect them to communicate, explain significant changes to my policy, take legitimate safety concerns seriously, and provide reasonable access to someone who can actually discuss an active claim. They demanded proof that my roof was replaced. I gave them an invoice from the licensed contractor who did the work. That should have been more than enough--but no. They demanded photos, so I took photos from the ground. Still not good enough. Now they're demanding that I physically climb onto the roof to take pictures myself--even after I told them I am mobility-limited and cannot do that safely. This is outrageous, discriminatory, and feels like a direct violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. They know full well I cannot climb on a roof, yet they continue to threaten cancellation if I don't comply. Why is my contractor's invoice not sufficient? Why can they send inspectors when they want to penalize homeowners, but suddenly can't send one to confirm repairs? The answer is simple: it's about money. American Family's behavior is predatory, unsafe, and designed to trap and punish their customers. They don't care about protecting homeowners--they care about forcing people out of coverage so they can avoid paying claims. If you're considering American Family, don't. They will discriminate, harass, and bully you until you give up. I would never recommend them to anyone.
