Checking in at a friends church
Brett J.

We came with some friends... It is a beautiful setting... a big sprawling campus of a church... with a lot of interest. From play grounds, basketball courts, indoor play scapes and more this church caters to the children. My boys loved it. The church its self has a beautiful amphitheater feel. You come in at the top level and go in and down. Every seat is a good seat. The sound was great and the view at the back was awesome! It is a lovely location that I am sure we will attend again.

Some girlfriends had been to Riverbend once or twice before and I decided to join them the next time they went. I had been looking for a church since I moved to Austin in 2009 but honestly hadn't tried very hard. This past year I started writing a bunch down and went to a few but wasn't crazy about any of them. I was skeptical about Riverbend because it is a big church but when we got there I had an amazing feeling about it and started attending just about every Sunday since. I filled out a guest card on my first day and got contacted within a week about joining AveNew - their young adult singles group. Everyone in it is really welcoming. About a month or so later the pastor, Dr. Haney, began talking about the importance of joining groups to be involved with the church. I filled out the form and expressed interest in choir, another singles group - Untitled, and their women's professional group. I didn't end up joining the choir because it's for the middle service and I prefer the last service. Untitled is also during the middle service and I've really enjoyed being part of that group as well. I have people to sit with during the service now and have made some new friendships. I became a member at the Membership dinner on August 21st and have been really happy with all of the experiences I've had so far and can't wait to see where my relationship with God goes while attending Riverbend. Also in September I joined the women's weekly Bible study and have met some wonderful women through that as well. We finished a Beth Moore study in November and started a Jennie Allen study a few weeks ago. The Christmas Eve service was magical. I really enjoyed it but wish it had been longer! I don't want to spoil the surprises so you'll just have to come check it out for yourself :o) Overall Riverbend has been a great experience and I'm glad I found my church home.

There is not an urgency to get people prepared. Not properly equipping people with a timely message.

We wanted to get more involved so we went a small group in Cedar Park for a while. I also worked with a young fellow who attended the church. Then we interacted with members on Facebook . The common thread is that they HATE. Not brown people , not poor people but Republicans. I don't remember any of them calling attention to Jesus . No room for anyone of different viewpoints. It's an "us" versus "them" hotbed. . So much for "no perfect people ... emphasis on the word ALLOWED since they no doubt run everyone else off. One of their "members" Nancy even said on FB that NO Christian SHOULD honor Charlie Kirk. I'm sure it's a wonderful place if you believe there should be only one political party in the US. .... Something about the culture there since it's the common denominator , Right ? If it's a root level ground swell of members so be it ... but if it's a top down thing : James 3:1-12 Amplified Bible (AMP) Not many [of you] should become teachers [serving in an official teaching capacity], my brothers and sisters, for you know that we [who are teachers] will be judged by a higher standard [because we have assumed greater accountability and more condemnation if we teach incorrectly].

But during the service, something felt off. The pastor kept pushing the idea of "planting a seed," and he tied it almost entirely to giving money to the church. He didn't acknowledge that planting seeds in Scripture can also mean serving, loving others, or growing spiritually. The message made it feel like if you weren't giving financially, you weren't planting seeds at all. At one point an older woman gave over $2,000, and instead of feeling inspiring, it felt like the pastor was emotionally pressuring the room. The whole moment had an almost staged quality, like he was trying to create dramatic emotion rather than letting anything genuine happen on its own. The atmosphere reminded me of those scenes in movies where the preacher is overly theatrical and everything feels a little too rehearsed. I still appreciate the kindness of the congregation and the sincerity of the man who baptized me, but the sermon itself didn't feel aligned with the gospel or with authentic faith.

Grateful for Pastor Brad who reflects Jesus so naturally. His leadership is 1 of the reasons the…read morechurch has grown so beautifully. I love how he stands by the entrance both at the beginning and at the end of the service, making time for people in such a personal way. Today after 12:15pm service, my father and I were waiting to greet him. I dreamed about him last night, so it felt important to at least shake his hand, introduce him to my dad who is visiting from out of country. Pastor Brad was in conversation with someone else, and because of his kindness and desire not to be rude, he continued to give them his full attention. My dad grew a little impatient, and we were about to leave, but just as we were walking away, Pastor Brad noticed us and called out with such warmth: "Hey!" He greeted us so genuinely, as though he had been aware of us the whole time. That moment carried such light, humility, & thoughtfulness- it reminded me of how Jesus notices people, even in the smallest details. It may seem simple, but it meant a lot to me and my father. Pastor Brad's example is a true reflection of Christ's heart. The worship here is my fav. It's powerful, uplifting, Spirit-filled. I've also been deeply blessed by the Freedom Group. Although I haven't quite found close community yet, I still love attending service because of the worship, the Word, and Pastor Brad's Christ-centered leadership. Such a great welcoming team and praise God for the parking team.

I was deeply skeptical, guarded, and unsure if a healthy church community even existed. The Vine changed that for me. From the beginning, it felt different in the best way. There's a genuine warmth, authenticity, and openness here that made me feel safe to just show up as I am. No pressure to pretend, no feeling like I had to fit into a mold, and space to ask honest questions and grow at my own pace. The teaching is thoughtful and grounded, the community is incredibly welcoming, and my kids genuinely love being part of it too. What I appreciate most is that The Vine feels deeply human. It's a place centered around love, connection, growth, and grace rather than performance. I never expected to find myself back in church, much less writing a review like this, but I'm really grateful I found The Vine.

If you've been a part of a church that misrepresented Jesus and left you damaged in some way, The Vine might be the place that restores your hope that the church can actually be a safe, healthy place.

The vision is clear and biblically aligned with the Great Commission. It is written everywhere, spoken about consistently, and lives in the hearts of the people. The name of Jesus is magnified and there is excellence in everything that is done no matter how big or small. The presence of the Holy Spirit is evident and powerful every service. If you are looking for a church home, do not skip over City Reach without carving out time for a visit.

Thankfully, a good friend of ours recommended City Reach; and after checking out the church over a couple of Sundays, we made our choice. We enjoyed and continue to be delighted by the friendliness of the church member community here. The parking team does a wonderful job each Sunday to make sure we find a parking spot, and they have a shuttle that brings us to the entrance. Drip coffee and hot tea are provided if you'd like to enjoy a hot beverage while worshipping and listening to the sermon. The worship teams are truly in the spirit and sing in the name of Jesus. The worship sets are powerful and we can feel the Holy Spirit moving within us, and we see how others around us have been impacted as well. The pastor is unapologetic in preaching what is written in the Bible. He doesn't add fluff but stays true to the Word. His expository style is appreciated as he highlights the main ideas while calling out key points. They also have a children's program, from infants through high school. Their new campus is beautiful and has several parking lots to choose from. There is also overflow parking available with a shuttle provided. City Reach Church isn't charismatic nor is it traditional (we've been to both kinds in the past), it's actually fun and we look forward to going each Sunday! The style here is unique, though it's not necessarily for everyone. If you're curious to learn what a relationship with Jesus looks like, are new in your walk with Jesus, or if you're looking for a new church home, we highly recommend giving City Reach a try!
