It might be rather odd to visit a cemetery while you're on vacation, but this place is too magnificent to pass up. River View Cemetery can be found at the west end of the Sellwood Bridge and looks east with a panoramic view of east Portland and Milwaukie as well Mt. Hood in Oregon State, Mt. St. Helens in Washington State and on a clear day the tip of Mt. Adams also in Washington State. Steeped in over a century old history with rolling hills, gorgeous landscape and beautiful views is Portland's oldest, not-for-profit endowment care cemetery. You will see historical monuments, private mausoleums, many which were built in the 1900's, and can pay your respects to Virgil Earp (Brother of Wyatt Earp) as well as other historical figures. Walking tours are available. Call to find out more.

We often don't think about all of the meticulous details required to organize funerals and memorial services, but these folks handle everything with precision and grace. The facility is tucked away in a hidden corner of Portland on Taylor's Ferry Road, and rises out of the forrested hillside suddenly - making it very easy to miss! The building boasts a large parking lot that covers two levels, and there are accessibility features throughout the property for those in need of them. Though the mausoleaum is an expansive space filled with light, it feels quiet and intimate. I'm very impressed that a facility dating back to 1916 is able to sparkle and shine like it was built yesterday. I very much appreciate the management and staff's dedication to maintaining this important place that is special to so many families.

A special thank you to Tim and the Riverview Abbey team for your professionalism, tact and care in helping us through all of this!

My only complaint would be that my loved one died on a Saturday morning. I tried to contact them on Sunday during business hours and spoke with someone who said a funeral director would call me back, but no one did. However, once I called on Monday and spoke directly with a funeral director, everything proceeded smoothly from there. All the paperwork is done on-line. Their prices are good, a big part of this is likely because the office on Millikan (in the City Hall Building in the Beaverton Round) is apparently just a small office with low overhead. The cremation is done through Riverview Abbey. It was done quickly and I was able to pick them up at the Millikan office (you can also pick up at Riverview Abbey). They can mail them to you as well. Obtaining death certificates through them was also easy, as was getting an obituary posted to their website. They are very professional, responsive, and happy to help.

Those with loved ones entombed here can visit anytime. In 2022, it was open over Memorial Day weekend and I stopped by. (For those looking, they have a number of sales - 20-50% off!) If you told me there was a mausoleum in Portland that was eight stories tall with almost 100,000 deceased, I would never believe you first of all, and second of all I would never guess that it was in Sellwood. But once you drive up to this building, you'll be like, "oh yeah, that is obviously a gigantic mausoleum." We got to visit the chapel and head down the winding staircase to the oldest area. The RAE Room (lumber tycoon and his second wife) was also open. And the main part of the mausoleum, the eight story building (5-8 above ground and 1-4 below), with beautiful stained glass, very old elevators, lots of religious statues and scripture, and maze-like floors that you could definitely get lost in. It's a really cool, weird Portland place to visit. The buildings need some maintenance, which makes me wonder what the future of this mausoleum and other mausoleums will be. I'm not sure younger generations are interested in this style of burial anymore. But there's clearly people visiting here, with flowers in many of the receptacles. And it was a neat rainy place to walk around and reflect on a rainy Saturday. Of course, please be respectful if you choose to visit.

This visit (and my Shul service) also gave me the chance to catch up on the various Jewish burial and morning rituals. So for those interested in that, here's my related "Guide for the Perplexed": Chevra Kadisha - A sacred burial society (usually connected with the cemetery or synagogue) tasked with preparing a bode for burial, performing a ritual purification (tahara) and dressing the body in shrouds. Jewish funerals generally take place as soon after death as possible. Aninut - The period from the moment of death until the burial. Shiva - Meaning "seven" in Hebrew, is the week of mourning following the funeral. Shloshim - Meaning "thirty" in Hebrew, is the first month of mourning following the funeral. Visits to the Gravesite - Some family and friends find it meaningful and/or comforting to visit the graves of loved ones before the High Holidays and at other times during the year. Small stones are often placed on the gravestone to mark the visitor's presence. Unveiling/Memorial - A formal ceremony following the placement of the matzevah (gravestone) at the cemetery. Customs differ, but the unveiling is generally held any time after shloshim and up to a year after burial. Mourner's Kaddish - Version of the Kaddish, praising God, that mourners recite during the bereavement period and to mark the anniversary of a death of a loved one. Yahrzeit - The yearly anniversary of a loved one's death. Yizkor - As part of the synagogue service on the final day of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, and on Yom Kippur, special yizkor (memorial) prayers for deceased relatives are recited.

We had just lost my granddaughter unexpectedly, and he was so wonderful in walking us through the grief to determine next steps and get through a truly difficult time. We had never buried a child before and felt overwhelmed and unsure of what we needed to do. Dennis helped us make a checklist so that we could accomplish everything they needed us to do, as well as knowing what we had to do over at Lincoln Memorial where she would be buried. He was super respectful. He even took the time to wrap the baby and bring her to a room so that I could see her (it was necessary for the Service to be closed casket, but I lived out of State, so this was my only chance to see my newborn grandchild that died unexpectedly at birth). Going that extra mile meant so much to me. We were able to navigate through the tears and sadness, pick out a casket that Jade could be buried in (without needing an additional vault), and receive the help we needed with putting together the Graveside Service and the programs. I designed the inside and back of the programs, and sent them as individual jpgs, and Andrea was kind enough to place them properly so they would print out. They turned out beautifully. We delivered a handmade dress, hat, tights, booties and a blanket and pillow for her to be buried with, along with a note to go inside her little casket. While we never saw her in it, I am sure they provided great care in dressing her tiny little body and placing her little head to rest on the soft satin pillow. On the day of the Service, Andrea arrived with baby Jade, set up the podium and guest book, along with the casket stand. She was helpful in directing the pallbearers and was very kind. We appreciated not only the compassion and helpfulness that was shown during this very unexpected time of grief, but also that Mt. Scott Funeral Home provides all of their services at their Cost for babies that die at birth, which really helped to $ave us money, and that was so helpful. This included all expenses -- the casket as well. What a kind and tremendous difference this made. We highly recommend Mt. Scott Funeral Home and are very, very grateful to Dennis and Andrea! Maleah Wraith was our family's funeral director and she was amazing. She was kind, compassionate, and prepared. Prior to our arrangement conference, I was talking to her that my Mom, who was legally next-of-kin to Dad, has many health issues, was in no shape to come to Portland from Lincoln City to sign all the forms and is not good with technology. Maleah suggested a form where my mom could give me the authority to sign any papers that were related with Dad's disposition. That was such a relief, because we did not want Mom to have to make the trip twice within a few weeks. When we went to arrange our dad's graveside service, she had all the paperwork done ahead of time. We just had to sign it. She helped us design a funeral folder for him and it turned out great and reflected perfectly who he was. Because my dad had not really eaten in four and 1/2 months, he was looking very thin when he died. I cannot tell you what a beautiful job Maleah did preparing Dad for viewing. One can tell that Maleah really is knowledgeable of how to make a deceased person look good. He no longer looked sick, and was as handsome as he had been in life. She gave us privacy but was available if we needed her. The day of the graveside, again, Maleah was calm and collected and because of her, we knew what to expect and what each step of the process was going to be before it happened. She was early to the cemetery so she could set up the flowers and guest book. She was discreet while setting casket spray on after the pall bearers had set Dad's casket over the grave. The graveside was fun, sad, and beautiful. The highlight was when the priest was finishing his blessing, the sprinklers at St. Matthew Cemetery came on and started spraying him. He said "Was your dad a jokester?" we laughed and said yes. Instead of panicking, Maleah was resourceful and collected buckets from the tool shed and used extra parasols we had, and put them over the sprinklers and wiped the casket's lid dry so we could finish our service. I cannot express how highly I would recommend Maleah at River View Cemetery Funeral Home. She takes great pride in her work, is prepared, compassionate, and was a wonderful guide in our journey to lay our dad to rest.

I had absolutely no way to finance a funeral on my own at 21. They would not cremate my father until they received their payment in full. Kept him in a freezer for a month harassing me with calls saying "We don't do payment plans." Didn't even want to cremate him but wasn't given a choice financially. I'll never forget being put in that conference room while being shown a slideshow of coffins just for the funeral director to scroll to the bottom and show me the "Cheapest Option" which was quite literally a cardboard box with a makeshift pillow for $500 and tell me "This is the most cost efficient option if you want to give him a little bit of dignity." If I want to give him a little bit of dignity? Are you serious? 1 year later and I'm desperately trying to enter trauma therapy that I still can't afford because I am haunted by the guilt that I couldn't give him a proper end of life ceremony and that he had to rot in a freezer because I couldn't pay the funeral home in full. On top of it, my funeral director quit halfway through. Edit: Update: See their response, the caring facade ends once they speak to you in private. She (Zoe) most likely meant to forward my email and responded directly to me instead given my name isn't Angela. Again, I wasn't "expecting" anything, I posted my experience because it clearly still affects me till this day. What do I have to "gain" from posting a negative review. And I never said they held his remains, I picked them up! But that doesn't negate the fact that he could have been cremated SOONER and not held in that freezer, I could've been sent the bill and paid in full later. They aren't compassionate in private. Why even respond to my review if this is your response when doing what you asked of me?
