The reserve is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. No bikes or equestrian use is allowed. Cabrillo High School is my old ala mater back when we had to strike 2 rocks together to make fire. I am surprised that no one has "Yelped" Burton Mesa Trailhead since the land was acquired in 1991 and has many trails leading into the chaparral and marshland. You can find some rare wildflowers there. It's a beautiful, serene walk in the middle of Vandenberg Village and also borders our local Air Force Base land. Nice hike while I was in California early May. Though, this time of year can be damp and cold, Vandenberg Village is a bit higher than the city of Lompoc, and most days, you are above the fog, and a bit dryer and warmer. The beach was beautiful and overall the experience was good but we were right next to the host and we felt like sardines , way too close to multiple neighbors . Our neighbors tent was probably 7 or 8 feet from our campfire ring ......Luckily everyone was friendly but not having any space or privacy is a pretty big deal, definitely not the kind of place I would stay for two or three nights, just one and done but a great pitstop to get you to Santa Barbara.

It's not typical of campgrounds I'm used to (like in Tahoe) where the sites are separate and there is some level of privacy. This is literally just a parking lot and there's some dirt behind the parking spot for you to pitch a tent. I can't really knock it because that's often typical of beach campgrounds. But just not my style. On the positive, it's like a 2 minute walk to the beach and it's nice to be next to the ocean. It does get a bit windy, so be aware of that. As an en route campground it's definitely not worth the $50 unless you need to shower. Probably should have just slept at a nearby vista point. But I can see it being great for families with kids who want to have beach time and then just walk back to the campsite.

Lavinia Campbell Park is named after Lavinia Campbell who purchased this property in 1947…read more In 2003, the nonprofit organization, Preservation of Los Olivos (POLO) purchased the property from Lavinia so that it could always be used as a park. I had really bad AT&T cell phone coverage in most of the adorable little town of Los Olivos, but I was able to get a little cell phone reception in this park. It is a great little park to escape the heat of a summer day, walk your dog or enjoy a nice picnic in the midst of numerous wine tasting rooms. It is located on the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue.

Barkin Park has both street parking and a small unpaved lot at the base of the hill. There's a part fenced off for small/shy dogs and a larger fenced section for the bigger ones. Both have ample amounts of room to let the dogs run and shade. As far as dog parks go (and I've been to quite a few) I'd rate this one above average. Each side had plenty of water stations, there wasn't any trash laying around, and pet waste wasn't visible anywhere. On the Saturday afternoon I visited it wasn't crowded at all. In fact, everyone but me and the two monsters I had with me happened to be on the small dog side. If I'm ever in the area again with a dog I'd definitely come back.
