I've been going to this park for over 30 years and seen it go through a lot of changes. In some…read morerespect, this park is almost as picturesque as you can get, with scenic open spaces and verdant tees dotted along it's walking path for shade on sunny summer days. However, it wasn't until the last few years the Chicago Park District finally did some long overdue retrofits and renovations bringing the park back up to five star quality and looks.
It's and nice plark overall, relatively safe, no gunshots or particularly weird people. Occasionally there are creepy dudes hanging around the bleachers near SW corner (yeah, we're watching YOU) and sometimes groups of feral teens exploring their sexuality with each other near the playground: so still use your head and be mindful. Safety has changed subtly over the years but it has never been a dangerous or hazardous park ... but it's still a park. Be aware that at anytime day or night you are truly never alone here as there are usually people about most times of the day & night. There are also numerous dog owners walking their dogs, joggers, bicyclists, baseball, football and soccer players always in the park an. So between the residents living across the street looking at the park and the other residents with their backyards practically in the park, someone is pretty much right there all the time. Really, if someone were to cry out for help someone is always around and due to the request of many residents to the alderman's office, the CPD presence is noticeable as WE CARE about our neighborhood and park!
Come and enjoy this small beautiful park, but remember to be respectful to the park and it's neighbors.
Sports and Non-sports:
Field-house -. Decent bathrooms & facilities
There are 6 Baseball diamonds.
3 Tennis courts, but one is converted in to an inline-hockey ring.
Playground is decent and newly renovated
Asphalt walking/jogging path... ok for limited inline skating.
The Good: Neighborhood & park relatively safe, park is picturesque, clean, friendly, has decent facilities including playground.
The Bad: maybe limited field house options and lack of some larger parks educational options. Organized sports can interfere with general public / neighborhood use. Be aware of people "hanging around" the bleachers late at night.
Notes: If you walk your dog there, pick up the poop or you will catch hell from us locals. If dogs are aggressive with other dogs keep them leashed as there are a lot of other dogs using the park including mine. Please use the trash bins provided to help keep our park pristine. Alcohol is NOT permitted and you will be removed by police.
Secrets of the park:
- There are a bunch of trees (about 5) in the park that my family and I have planted for Arbor Day or something a long time ago, now they are taller than a 3-story buildings.
- Lots teenagers having sex: On the bleachers in the SW corner of the park. In the playground. In the field house. By the tennis courts. In the grass under the trees ... and more.
- There was once a giant single oak in the middle of the park that was struck by lightening and came down over twenty-five years ago.
- A long time ago some idiot tried to go off-roading with a regular car in the park only to have it sink in the soft muddy grass in the middle of the park. It was there for days because it sank so deep.
