I hope to improve my rating once the new playground equipment gets installed in the summer of 2014. Over the past 7 years of living in the area, I have been avoiding the park due to its very dated equipment and due to its uninspiring class offerings.
The park has no pool. It is surrounded with dated equipment and is poorly maintained. The small water spray area for kids can get hazardous when fungi grows on the concrete floor. The slides are simple, short and straight, made of metal, dirty at times, and lead to a ground hole, full of water, after the rain. There is a big hop for kids from the ground to the swings, given the deep present ground holes under the swings. The retention walls for the bark floor are falling apart. The benches are few and leaning backwards. So, our home uses suburban parks' equipment to play, like those found in Norridge.
However, I do enjoy the shade of trees throughout the park and the black metal fence, which keeps the kids safe, away from the moving street cars. The trees also make it pleasant to do laps around the park.
The class offerings are uninspiring. I took a toddler and mom gymnastics class that essentially involved going in circles with my toddler. The instruction was lacking. I was bored!!! My son took T-ball, basketball and floor hockey classes, which worked out primarily due to our tight schedule during the school week and due to some passion and dedication exhibited by the parent volunteer coaches. For the most part, we use suburban programs for their variety and quality, especially those found in the Park Ridge Park District, swimming, chess, engineering, etc.
I would like to see some beautification of the park with flowering bushes and flowering beds. I am told this cannot happen, because no staff or volunteer is "certified" to plant at the park. Nevertheless, about 2-3 years ago, I did donate some resilient Hostas, but they have eventually died out due to the lack of watering. I guess there is no sprinkler system at the park and nothing seems to be watered except for the concrete floor of the kid sprinkler system. read more
