I rarely write reviews, even though I should, and I am quicker to write bad reviews than I am to write good ones (I'm lazy and I procrastinate). But I promised myself that I would definitely write one for Mark and Rivard's Earthworks. he truly deserves a five-star rating. I am actually disappointed that I will not be able to work with Mark again (I do not foresee another large demolition project in my future). I was more than happy with the experience and I was 100% satisfied with Mark's work. I highly recommend him and his work and I would call him again if I ever had a need for his services. Mark was the BEST contractor I have ever worked with. From start to finish, Mark was professional, friendly, and helpful. We decided to abandon our 30,000 gallon pool and due to the size of the job, we expected this job to be a difficult process filled with headaches. Despite the size and complexity, this job was, literally, the easiest I have had done in 17 years. I hired Mark primarily because of the reviews that stated his handling of city building permits and inspections. I have dealt with several contractors, including a few of the larger and popular companies in our area who promised to obtain permits and never did. Mark lived up to the reputation, obtaining permits before starting work and attending both city inspections...without having any issues or problems. I would have been happy with just knowing the work had been done to code, but Mark's attitude and work ethic blew me away! Mark arrived everyday by 8:00 AM and put in a solid 9+ hours on site. A few issues came up during the work but, unlike most contractors I've dealt with, Mark's attitude was always, "No problem. I can take care of that." We own an "odd-shaped" property lot with some access areas barely over 7'. Mark was a real master operating his equipment during setup and the job process. It is obvious he has been doing this for many years when you see his ability at maneuvering large equipment. I was shocked on the first day when Mark arrived by himself...no crew. Aside from his son coming out the last day to help with cleanup, Mark performed the ENTIRE job by himself. I have to say that it was nice not having a 5-6 member crew walking back and forth across my property for an entire week but, considering how well the job was done, I would have tolerated it. Mark talked to me throughout out the job to find out what my plans were after the job was done. In doing so, he saved us a couple thousand dollars. Mark brought over fill dirt from a previous job, which saved us in hauling and backfill costs. And, since we were not putting in grass, we didn't need special top soil for growing. Mark did a residential pool demo for us that was smooth and thoughtful. He used a multi-use excavator that was easy on the ears and on the environment. Obtained the permit, scheduled all inspections and obtained permission to use private property to gain entry for the project, then proceeded to skillfully step through each phase to a very (for us) satisfying completion, one day sooner than scheduled at a competitive rate. Our home will be going on the market soon and the backyard now appears twice the size it was. He graded it to blend nicely with the existing landscape and even leveled a large unwanted dirt mound as well!! He evenly applied four or five inches of 30/70 topsoil for the finish and recommended a grass seed. He also took down a large, rusty old metal tool shed and helped improve property value by opening a lot of space in a side yard. Initially we got three additional bids and Mark's background, broad range of experience and knowledge, including soil types, compaction and shrinkage patterns convinced us he was our best choice! We felt confident our project would be in good hands. Best decision ever! He was always responsive, stayed in touch throughout the project, was flexible, easy to work with, punctual and explained aspects of the project that helped us feel like we were "in on it"; so much more fun when you know what's going on!! He offers a wide range of other services, including pool digging, sidewalks and driveways; and a couple we hope to use on our next property: fire breaks and building trails! I had a relatively small job in Lincoln, CA, to remove 8-10 yards of dirt and grade for RV parking in my backyard. Mark arranged for a in-person estimate, showed up on time, and we agreed on a schedule and price. He suggested some enhancements that I had not considered that maximized the space I was working with. You might not think that someone who does excavation and land clearing would be passionate about their work, but then you haven't met Mark Rivard. We had 6 acres of brush and poison oak, and Mark turned into into a paradise. He spent the time up front to talk through the project and really get a grasp of my vision, then he artistically executed, keeping a canopy of oaks over our (now-usable) property. Mark works like a demon and he prices out less than others we talked to. His effort and his results are those of someone who obviously cares a great deal about their work. There is a reason you hire a professional. You want the job done right (the first time), you want a "can do" attitude, and most of all you don't want to regret your decision in 6 months. If you need a true professional to do serious excavation work, I strongly recommend Rivards Earth Works. Mark (the owner) shows up with professional clean equipment and a clear understanding of how to accomplish the task. In my case, I needed large holes dug for trees I intend to plant. some of these holes were in tight spaces. Mark had the expertise to extract the dirt (and rock) with minimum implact on surrounding landscape and hard scape. he loaded the dirt into his trailer and when he was done, swept any residue off the side walk. Mark understands how to do business the old fashioned way: make an agreement and live up to it. When I have my pool dug, I am only going to call one contractor. I was referred to rivard's earth works from a friend. We live on a slope at the base of a mountain, and have had major issues of erosion and flood damage to our property. I can't say enough about Mark's work. He excavated 4" of soil from a large area in our backyard and then filled it in with 3" of topsoil so we could lay new sod in the area. Not only is he friendly and very hard working, but he also gave us some terrific advice on installing a drain system in another part of our yard. I called Mark based on the other review. We needed a hole dug in the backyard for a small lap pool. Mark was quick to return my initial call. He set up an appointment that had to be changed because of a problem at the out of town site he was at (not his problem, but required he stay there). He was apologetic and didn't try to blow us off. The day of our appointment he was on time and very professional. After reviewing our needs and the location of the site he recommended an alternative method using another company. He even spoke to the other company and explained our needs! The second company will save us money with less risk to property. This was unexpected and really helped.
