I did not know I needed... did not know I WANTED... a homebirth midwife. I had had a hospital birth with my first and a midwife/homebirth with my second. I was pregnant with my third and, since both my previous birthing experiences had been... ahem... rough, I didn't feel motivated to invest in another homebirth. I am so, so grateful that my doula kept urging me toward Alana and that she so gently invited me to reconsider a home birth. It is one thing for someone to say they support someone no matter what their decisions are. It is another to really feel that's true, that the whole of that other will support you, and believes in you. I felt that with Alana. As I made the many decisions on the path to birth, through birth, and in postpartum, I never worried that I would be judged about anything. There was a dicey mid-birthing decision to be made and Alana was with me fully. I had no idea all a midwife could and would do for me and my family to make birth and postpartum so much more sane, and kind. Alana's visits to our home put us all in a sort of womb space--a sacred space of really deep presence to how precious life is. These were once or twice in a lifetime moments that I will always treasure, and could easily have missed if I'd had hospital-only prenatal care. Alana will gently help you prepare for birth and postpartum so that you don't have to grapple with the things that can become major stressors when unprepared. (In my experiences, it was easy to slip through the cracks at the hospital, despite so many great people there.) Alana will also make sure that your preparation is paced such that you are ready to move on from preparation to savoring for a sweet space of time before your baby is due. Even as we prepare, so much can happen in the birthing journey, and we had some curves during ours. Alana was present, affirming, and Calm. After our baby was born, he needed some support. Alana was fully with us, masterful, and deeply attuned. Her support continued postpartum. I was repeatedly shocked at how loving and enthusiastically Alana responded to my every text, call or question. Postpartum care matters, and Alana was genuinely there. This was not "just" a profound birthing experience, it was a profound life experience. Alana is there for your baby, and she is there for you and your wellbeing. (If you have other family involved, she is there for them, too-she sees you in your wholeness.) She is also more broadly ethical, looking at midwifery within the context of our culture in addition to how midwifery can serve individuals and families, and she is, frankly, a badass, but not in the way that makes you feel like you can't be naked in front of her--literally and metaphorically! She is gentle, humble, and brings a deep joy... and sometimes pastries. :) ANY way that a woman births is "right", and, I would strongly encourage anyone I loved to consider what a homebirth has to offer and allow, that a hospital birth does not. I hope you have YOUR birth. I am so grateful that Alana helped us have ours.

I am so grateful to Alana for her amazingly compassionate and thoughtful care. I worked with her during my third pregnancy and birth. From the very beginning Alana was so open to hearing my experience and needs and rather than trying to fit my experience into a preconceived notion, she seemed totally dedicated to listening to and responding to what was happening for me without any judgement. I felt totally supported in both talking through the emotional aspects of pregnancy and birth and medical/scientific ones. I have worked with home birth midwives before and when things got complicated I felt a slight undertone of judgement like if I had just believed more in the beautiful possibilities of birth I wouldn't be facing the more complicated medical choices that I was. With Alana I felt that all aspects of my experience and thinking was respected. She really helped me feel good about a pregnancy that I had some challenges trusting in, given my age and previous experiences. I had planned from the beginning to have a hospital birth and was working with Alana for additional support. This arrangement turned out to be invaluable. Although I had a good experience at the hospital, there was nothing like having someone I trusted deeply and had more knowledge of me as a person and my pregnancy history. I felt like Alana was really there for me even when I was at the hospital and especially when I was facing some confusing and scary medical situations. I also had a strong sense from Alana through so many little things - from the structure of her forms to the way she talked about midwifery care and issues in society that she is deeply committed to justice and sees her midwifery practice as part of it. That perspective also meant a lot to me. I deeply recommend Alana as a midwife to anyone - especially anyone who may be dealing with a more complicated pregnancy or who may be combining midwifery care with hospital care.

When we were shopping for a midwife.. I said I wanted someone magical. Alana was magical. She was so genuinely caring, knowledgeable and able to connect with who we are and how we envision our pregnancy and birth journey. Having her after the birth was most helpful as we then navigated so many new parts of life in caring for a newborn. I love Alana and will forever be grateful for her support.

I just want to say that every pregnant mama needs Alana in their pregnancy journey to becoming a mother I just have no words to express my gratitude ... All I can say is that she has been such a blessing in my life I met her through one of my best friends back in 2021 when I found out I was pregnant for the first time Alana is one of a kind; she is one of the best human beings you will ever meet in your life. She is very wise, she holds space for you and your family in one of the most important days of your life. She is so knowledgeable, strong, bright, thoughtful, caring, nurturing, and knows how to advocate for you, baby's and pretty much for the whole family's wellbeing. She is one step ahead of the game and has great resources if something is not within her scope of practice. Back in 2021 I saw her for prenatal care for my first pregnancy because I wanted to have my husband be a part of the process since he was not able to go with me to the Dr appt due to COVID guidelines. Her appointment was so different from the Dr appt. A Plus is that she also speaks Spanish which is our preferred language and she was able to explain the prenatal care, delivery and postpartum process to my husband in Spanish in a very clear way. We were very excited to come for the prenatal appointment I was able to have my husband her appointment was very thorough and we were able to hear baby's heartbeat a moment that I will cherish forever. Sadly, I lost my baby boy at 4 months pregnant due to cervical insufficiency something I was not aware of and didn't have symptoms. The day I found out I was at the anatomy ultrasound appointment and found I was already 4 cm dilated and there was no way to save my pregnancy. Alana came to the hospital that day to be with me and my husband; I delivered my baby boy it was the worst day of my life filled with shock and trauma but Alana helped me and my husband to get through it she was the best support person we could have during that moment; she was light during that moment of darkness. She was so caring and advocated for the whole family that day. She came to the funeral ceremony we did for our son. It was needed for us so we could have closure and she checked on me constantly during the postpartum period; she did a beautiful ceremony which was healing to me emotionally and spiritually and she filled me with hope. I won't forget all they ways she cared for me as a first time mama who lost her first baby my baby angel boy. She was nurturing in so many ways and I can say she helped me overcome those dark days. I believe that the care I received from Alana after I lost my first baby helped me to not lose hope on becoming a mother in the future. Fast forward a year later I found out I was pregnant for a second time. Knowing my previous history of cervical insufficiency and having a high risk pregnancy I did not doubt for one second we needed Alana to be part of our journey again Her prenatal care, support during delivery and postpartum was top notch and amazing. I was seeing a perinatologist every two weeks after my cerclage procedure and Alana was always available and wanted to be updated of any changes. Any questions I had she was available to answer. Every time I asked her opinion she gave me all the information and if I needed to make a decision. I had to be induced at 37 weeks due to having IUGR (Intrauterine Growth restriction ) Alana was there for me during the induction process and really advocated for me when I encountered a Dr and RN who wanted to push procedures on their own time. Alana gave me the strength to advocate for myself. I ended up having emergency C- section due to baby not tolerating induction. But having Alana there right after delivery being attentive to do skin to skin, start breastfeeding right away and helping managing symptoms made a whole difference. After a high risk and stressful pregnancy we were able to deliver a healthy baby girl Post partum care was so important for me Alana was there again checking on me and my family. She made another beautiful ceremony after following my "cuarentena" she respected our culture and traditions. I can honestly say I was able to breastfeed thanks to her help at the beginning where I felt lost she was there for me and baby the first few days she also has great resources and recommendations she recommended a lactation consultant who found out baby had a tongue tie, she has made so many great recommendations along the way Alana has been such an important person in my life and my journey to becoming a mother She is a wonderful mom herself and she is an inspiration. Thank you Alana for everything you have done I already told my husband if we have another baby we have to have her by our side again. Alana May God Bless you and continue to give you wisdom, strength and love to keep caring for all the mamas out there the way you know to care for them We love you and appreciate you

We just had our six week postpartum visit with Alana, and we're so sad that our time with her has come to an end! I'm a midwife myself, and I loved how Alana seamlessly merges evidence based practice with years of experience and a kind, compassionate, caring approach that meets families where they're at. We felt cared for and supported throughout my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period, and even my 3 year old is attached to her. I felt well supported and safe during my labor and birth, and my husband also felt like we were in good hands, which allowed him to focus fully on supporting me. We got to have the beautiful home birth we had wanted, and we are so glad Alana was there to support us. You'll be in safe, supportive, compassionate and experienced hands with Alana, and I can't recommend her enough.

My kid is now 13 months and I miss seeing Alana for my midwife visits! I recommend 100%, no reservations. Alana provided me with the best healthcare I have ever received in my life: dignified and respectful, knowledgeable and humble, caring and nerdy. As someone with hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, I was nervous both about the ways that hEDS would affect my body, as well as how my care providers would treat me and manage that information and the challenges that may arise along the way of my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. Alana took all of my concerns seriously. She listened deeply, did more research when needed, supported me to pull in additional pelvic floor and PT support when she thought it was needed, and never once left me feeling minimized, brushed aside, or that anything I brought up was anything but of the highest importance to consider; it was truly a healing experience for me. I remember feeling bewildered in the birth class we took when they had a whole section (aimed mostly at people having hospital births) about how to stall if you wanted more time to assess if you felt comfortable with a particular intervention. We spent so much time together with Alana in prenatal appointments before the birth that I had total trust in her-- I knew she knew what my preferences and desires were for the birth, and my reasons why. I didn't have to worry about any of the things covered in that section of the class. This was such a gift for me-- I got to be in my body, focus on labor, and relax into the web of support around me. I felt safe, supported, and able to let go with no fears. The kind of care you get with Alana is whole: attending to the physical, but also the social and emotional aspects of the perinatal experience. And it's also caring: She went above and beyond to support us in the postpartum recovery period. I felt so supported in a time when I had so many questions and struggles, both with my body and with our baby, who took a good long while to figure out their latch. I wish we could get this kind of care for all of life, and I'm looking forward to working with Alana again if/when we have our second kid.

She listened with understanding and compassion and for the first time I truly felt like a care provider was really listening to me. For my first birth, I had a typical hospital birth with a typical OB. Although I did not have a traumatic experience, I wanted something different for my second time around. I found Shannon and it truly was a blessing. The level of care and attention to detail was above and beyond anything I had experienced before. When the day came to give birth, having her there made me feel so safe supported and empowered. From the very beginning, they gave us such a deep feeling of comfort and security, not only through their incredible knowledge but through their presence alone. During the birth, they created such a calm and steady presence in our home. I always felt supported and reassured, and their quiet confidence helped me stay grounded through the entire experience (and it was long). They knew exactly when to step in and when to simply hold space. Their care extended far beyond the clinical -- it was emotional, human, and deeply compassionate. Choosing a home birth for my first birth was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and having Shannon and A'maya as my midwives made it more beautiful than I could have imagined. And somehow, incredibly, alhamdulillah, I can honestly say I miss my birth. How many people can say that? It was such a powerful, peaceful, and empowering experience, one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. That is a testament to the environment they created and the care they provided. We Explained to her that we wanted something to where we could be the most hands-on during our birth, and that is exactly what we got. Throughout the entire pregnancy, she educated us. Answering all of my questions. She is so funny, but also extremely professional and truly just a joy to get to work with. When I went into labor, she was there a heartbeat more ready than we were we were taking our time we had two other kids lol. She always asked for permission before doing anything. I felt like I was being treated like a queen. After giving birth, she was so accommodating so attentive. She came to do checks on myself and the baby she always asked before even touching the baby. She respects everybody boundaries. I got the honor to become her friend and kept in contact giving her updates on our baby that she helped bring into this world. Then we got pregnant again and knew that we wanted to have a free birth. But we still knew that we wanted prenatal care and we only knew of one place we wanted to go to get that.. Charlee helped guide us to make sure that we got our blood work done during pregnancy, our anatomy scan, and even made sure that baby was headed down a few weeks before giving birth. Unfortunately, we were moving to Texas to give birth, so there was no way for her to be our midwife. But she helped us by making sure we had a healthy pregnancy the entire way. With our first, I had a long labor and the OB, midwife, and L&D nurse were not in agreement about how to manage it. The OB was pushing for a C-section, which I ended up not needing. The experience of being caught between providers was stressful and made me wonder if I might have ended up with an unnecessary surgery had I not happened to have that midwife and nurse advocating for me. With baby #2 I felt so much better being in Lindy's care. She is passionate about the mother's wellbeing alongside the health of the baby, so I felt genuinely cared for in every prenatal visit, during labor & delivery, and throughout my hospital stay. She provided holistic care at every check-up, focused not just on physical health but also on mental and emotional wellbeing. In between our visits, if issues came up I could (and did) call or email her with a whole range of questions -- from how to handle shortness of breath to medication safety during pregnancy, to how to think about postpartum support systems. As I approached my due date she also gave me a bunch of practical tips on how to get better sleep with a newborn and insisted that my partner join some of our visits so that we would all be on the same page. The labor and delivery experience with Lindy was in stark contrast to my first one. When I went into labor Lindy met us at the hospital and already had a room ready for us so we didn't have to wait around in triage. There was no back and forth between providers because it was clear that Lindy was in charge, which gave us a lot of comfort. The process was also a lot less restrictive and invasive -- no continuous monitoring, no dilation checks (which of course may vary depending on your situation). Lindy is a legend in the East Bay midwife world. She pioneered the model of private practice midwifery with hospital-based delivery in the East Bay, and she personally trained many of the private midwives in the area. She is a birth worker that truly loves what she does, is incredibly skilled in her work, and has a deep sense of care for the mothers, families, and babies she works with. We were so impressed by how supported we felt during the entire pregnancy, birth, and post partum period. I truly wish every mother could receive midwifery care as exceptional as east bay midwives. We also had excellent experience with Grace and Sophia- the team that Amanda works with are also amazing birth workers. I highly recommend east bay midwives to someone that wants a safe, supported home birth with experienced and loving help!

My baby boy is now 4 years old and absolutely thriving--and a huge part of that is because of the knowledge, skill, and calm presence they brought to one of the most important days of my life. From the beginning, Morgan and Evaly were patient, attentive, and incredibly supportive. They took the time to truly listen to me, explain everything clearly, and make sure I felt informed and empowered throughout my pregnancy and birth. Their confidence never felt rushed or arrogant--it was grounded, reassuring, and deeply professional. After I pushed my son out, I experienced a situation that could have quickly turned into a serious medical emergency. Morgan and Evaly handled it with remarkable skill and composure. They recognized what was happening immediately, acted decisively, and supported me through it with such calm and competence that I felt safe the entire time. Their ability to manage that moment made all the difference, and I truly believe their expertise prevented a much worse outcome. They are extraordinary midwives and incredible humans.

They listened deeply, answered every question, made space for all feelings--from "I hate being pregnant" to "I feel like a goddess"! Appointments were unhurried, thoughtful, and deeply personal. They were always available by text, email, or phone, and quickly understood how best to support me. They cared not only about my physical well-being, but also about the emotional journey my partner and I were on. No matter what your intentions or hopes are for your birth, they will meet you there and support you fully, without judgment. On the day of our daughter Aurora's birth, Aimée and Jas brought an incredible combination of patience, expertise, and calm. They turned every possible stone to support a vaginal birth and saved me and my baby from a C-section. My partner was able to receive our baby himself, an experience we will cherish forever. I will never forget their genuine joy when Aurora finally arrived after a long and challenging labor. In one of the most vulnerable moments of our lives, they made us feel safe, supported, and deeply cared for. By the end of our journey, they felt like family. We left every appointment grateful we had chosen them, and we miss our visits dearly. I cannot imagine having gone through pregnancy and birth with anyone else, and I would choose them again without hesitation. I would wholeheartedly recommend Collective Birth to first-time parents, seasoned parents, and anyone looking for deeply personalized, compassionate, and empowering care. --Cami, Zach, and Aurora

We credit so much of that to the care we received from Flo, Jasmine, and Aimée. I can not recommend them highly enough. For context, I delivered at 44 years old with an IVF pregnancy. From the get go we felt in such good hands. In approaching the care of mom, they make space for the whole person (and the the partner/family experience). At each appointment my husband and I felt heard and seen as we moved through the process. They ask questions and listen deeply. They tend to not just your physical state but your emotions - your head, heart, and soul. This was critical in healing from the trauma of our second birthing experience and making space for a different kind of experience. Their care is based in expertise, research, data, and professional experience and they also leave room for our primal knowledge and intuition. This allowed us to trust my body while also having medical experts alongside us. A month before our child was due, my father died. This was an unexpected emotional wave at an already emotional time, and they held space for me to process and integrate this grief into the final weeks of pregnancy and labor. Our delivery experience was exactly what we hoped for - and I know how rare that is having had two previous experiences that did no go as we had hoped. Flo, Jasmine, and Aimée are an incredible team who helped us manifest a safe and healing delivery. (Some background: Our second child was born during the depths of the pandemic. We had a stressful pregnancy and a traumatic birthing and immediate postnatal experience, during which we received subpar care from a team of doctors. Coming into this third pregnancy we were intent on having a different experience, hence choosing midwifery care. After interviewing two different teams of midwifes we chose Collective Birth.)

VBAC/HBAC success story!…read more As a second-time mom, I knew I wanted my birth experience to be drastically different than my first. I lived in New Jersey when we found out we were pregnant, so I started looking for midwives and OBs out there. I could not find someone who felt right for me. Some wouldn't listen/validate my concerns, others were asking over $10K out-of-pocket up front. As a result, I didn't feel comfortable having any prenatal care at all for the first 30 weeks. Fast forward, my husband got a job in the Bay Area. We were eager to find prenatal care that I felt right about upon moving here. I researched midwives and found Gingi's website. I reached out. We chatted on the phone so she could get an idea of my previous birth and I could ask her some initial questions, and we agreed to meet. I kept researching other midwives, but as soon as I met Gingi, I knew she was the one. The search was over and I had finally found a care provider that I felt confident with. This is so key for an expecting mother. Confidence and trust in your care provider is crucial to obtaining the birth you desire. I could not have had the natural home birth I desired if Gingi Allen wasn't my midwife. God led me to her. She was attentive, caring, and so wise. When my labs showed low iron, she recommended natural ways of increasing my levels. It worked. When we found out my son was breech at 36 weeks, she recommended ways we could flip him. He flipped naturally. My husband was working nights 80 hours a week, I was chasing my 18-month old toddler around, working from home full-time, and unpacking from the move. She reminded me to slow down, reflect, meditate, pause. She really looked at my health from a holistic perspective. Because of her recommendations, I have a fantastic acupuncturist, osteopath and massage therapist. The team she assembled for me was amazing. She was approaching maternity leave herself, and made sure that Grace Bender, her fellow CNM, was there to attend to me postpartum. She was amazing and also at my birth. Kai, her apprentice, was fantastic, and conducted my bone closing ceremony postpartum. During my birth, Gingi really encouraged me to listen to my body. I asked her questions, like "should I push now?" LOL and she would say, "What is your body telling you to do?" She was so patient with me. Listen, my birth, from prodromal labor in the beginning to pushing at the end, was literally a total of 48 hours. She never wavered. She never said, "Well, if x, y or z doesn't happen in this timeframe, then we'll have to.....blah blah blah" That's usually what a woman hears before their care provider deviates from the birth plan. That never happened with Gingi. I loved that she didn't tell me how dilated I was. That was something triggering for me, since I stalled at 9 cm with my first son before I had the C-section. That's not even something I asked Gingi to refrain from doing. She just KNEW that dilating to 10cm was something I was concerned wouldn't happen, so she didn't allow me to worry about it during birth. I'm telling you, this woman's instincts are SUPERB. Trust me when I say, Gingi is the midwife YOU WANT AND NEED. I could not have birthed my beautiful 9lb, 11 oz son at home , after a previous C-section, if I didn't have Gingi. A comment my last midwife made (with my first son), was that my son was "big" which is why I stalled. He was 8 lbs, 12 oz. So literally my second son was almost a FULL POUND LARGER, and I had him at home, COMPLETELY NATURAL. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT WITHOUT GINGI! She is amazing. Just hire her already. You'll be thrilled you did. I was only under her care from weeks 30-40 and still had the most amazing prenatal care experience. My postpartum care, first with her and then, Grace, was crucial to my recovery. I had PPD the first time, but not this time! Gingi Allen will do everything she can to ensure all women in her care have an amazing prenatal care and birth experience. As you can tell, I highly recommend.

She also speaks fluent Spanish which is great! Throughout our prenatal care Eva was competent, available and understanding. She was a source of great resources (chiropractics, homebirth classes, birth tub etc). She also helped me tremendously with nutrition and supplements. Even as a midwife, she taught me many things I did not know myself. My water released a LONG 66 hours before my baby was born and Eva came over every morning and evening with not only a plan, but herbs and homeopathy and a bunch of tricks in her bag to get things going. Anytime I needed to reach her she was available. And when things finally got going everything went SO quickly my labor was probably 2-3 hours total and between contractions I definitely was impressed with how quickly she set up all of her equipment, including her emergency gear, but also attended to me with her lovely calm and caring manner that I so admire. The birth was the most amazing experience, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. I truly felt my protected, attended to, and respected in the deepest sense. We all had such a wonderful time complete with champagne toast to the birthday boy! We didn't anticipate that we would also come to love Eva for her amazing postpartum care. Compared to the birth breastfeeding was extremely challenging for me. Eva helped me so much through this and the postpartum process. Compared to the one 6 week visit you have with a hospital based clinic, you have many many visits postpartum with Eva. This was amazing, because as new parents, we truly trusted her advice and guidance and really NEEDED support more than ever at this time. I also had the wonderful opportunity to watch Eva attend a good friend's homebirth and again she was calm and collected, knowledgeable and caring, quick and steady, alert yet sensitive - all qualities very important for her work! Eva pours her heart and soul into her work which shines through in the caring and committed relationships she forms with her clients. She is one of the most positive people I've ever met and was definitely "called" to the field of midwifery.

Please note that my review is based not as a mother laboring for the birth of her child, but as a support person, guiding the laboring mother. Eva demonstrated the most gentle, comprehensive, and trusting care you need in order to trust a midwife with the delivery of your baby. Throughout the entire birthing process, way before the delivery date, Eva continued to prepare and mentor both my friend, her husband, and I on what to expect. During delivery, Eva was calm and proved to be one of the driving forces for my friend's perfect delivery. She is absoultely what I envision an excellent midwife to be.
