We had a very difficult labor experience at CPMC. Our medical staff were far more concerned with their equipment and aggressive interventions than with the comfort and wishes of my wife. For example, when we requested an epidural, it didn't work, only blocking sensation to my wife's legs, but the nurses ignored this completely, and continued with extremely painful interventions, in spite of my wife's cries of pain.
Through it all, Dina was a rock of stability and calm, helping to manage my wife's pain with massage, position changes, and other therapeutic help, all the while helping to advocate for us. We wanted a very evidence-based approach to our care, and as a nurse, Dina was completely on board with this, and very knowledgeable. Still, it was clear that she would also have been very helpful if, for example, we were more spiritually-oriented people (we're really not).
Dina met with us many times before and after the birth, and helped us create a detailed birth plan. That plan went out the window when CPMC staff steamrolled us with their aggressive interventions and complete disregard for our wishes and comfort, but Dina was a strong advocate on our behalf, and some aspects of our plan were respected.
Expectant mothers, if you will indulge my mansplaining here, if you are going to labor at a hospital like CPMC, keep in mind that their primary concerns are the health of the mother and baby, the functioning of their janky equipment, and their own liability. Not on this list: your comfort, and your wishes. This is where a calm, knowledgeable, and empathetic doula like Dina quickly becomes the most valuable person in the room, managing your pain, advocating for your needs and wishes, and just being present and informed. As much as I tried to be a supportive partner, there's no substitute for experience and knowledge. For my part, I was happy that I could focus on emotional support while Dina focused on therapeutic help like massage.
If you're on the fence about hiring a doula, from our experience you will absolutely not regret it, and Dina is a fantastic doula.
Also, in case this wasn't clear, in my experience, CPMC is a dystopian baby factory. read more
