Highly discourage anyone from going here. Heed the warnings from other reviews. I did not feel listened to, respected or cared for. Provider is argumentative, dismissive, condescending, poor communication from front desk, and the pap was way longer and way more uncomfortable than usual - I'm 44 and been having them since I was 13, so I'm aware. Need further procedures and too scared to go back to her. When feedback was given she was short and seemed to care less. I also felt just very uncomfortable with her style of examination. I left feeling not good about it and the feeling has lingered ever since. Dr Melkonian is the very best Gynecologist I have ever been to. She saved me a lot of suffering when she referred me to another Dr who operated on my bladder. YAY! I have been seeing Dr. Melkonian for almost 30 years. When I first came to her she was the first doctor to really listen and address my pain. She took the time to get to know me and each visit since she honestly listens to my concerns and ask probing questions to get the heart of the matter. Do not go to this woman. This was really the worst experience at a Dr. I have ever had. She was absolutely argumentative and condescending. She didn't agree with the treatment I was on for menopause and instead of providing me with alternatives which I asked for repeatedly, she accused me of podcast doctoring and got irate when I asked what her training was in menopause. Probably because she doesn't have any. Her information was outdated and in conflict with every other doctor I have seen in the last couple years. She kicked me out which was honestly a relief. She was mad I didn't bring copies of my tests with me - I had to remind her that she has access to all of them on the computer, which there weren't many of in the office. Dr. Melkonian is one of few doctors in Marin that have time for their patients and has the knowledge in many areas of health care, I have lived in Marin for years and most of my doctors have retired and left the area. I have been going to Dr. Rita Melkonian for probably 14 years now she is one of the best doctors I have ever known and I am so grateful to her in many aspects of my life not only for being the best urologist gynecologist ever I went to see her a little bit ago and she had me follow up somewhere else and thank God I did because if it wasn't for doctor Melkonian I would've been left with a load of polyps in my colon I didn't even know I had One of them, especially I'm dealing with right now, but God knows this doctor has got me out so much pain in my life with my interstitial cystitis and a lot more issues and I just want Dr. Melkonian to know. I don't normally yelp personal stuff, like my gyn, but when I saw she had one review, and it was negative, I wanted to make sure I rated Dr. Melkonian. I respect her training. She's a pelvic surgical specialist in addition to being a GYN. She knows her stuff. In the past, I did have to wait a bit before my scheduled appointment was ready, but that seems to be worked out now. My experience with her PA is that she goes by the book, didn't really listen to my concerns and just wanted to mete out standard treatment. But Dr. Melkonian seems to take a more holistic approach. I feel she really listens to me and I know she takes time during my appointment to talk things through with me. She's been an excellent doctor. I can only say good things. read more

I'm shocked. I used to go to Dr. Melkonian since I was a teen, and I didn't realize how terrible her bedside manner and judgement are. She initially put me on birth control that made me manic depressive, and gave me a hard time when I tried to switch off it. As I got older, she hassled me about my sex life and if I had lost my virginity yet. Completely unprofessional and unnecessary. I also thought that annuals were always painful and terrifying. I was basically traumatized based on my experiences at this office. I went somewhere new this year where I left the office completely floored. There was no pain or discomfort. My first appointment (normal checkup) with Dr. Melkonian went fine. Then a few months later, I had a miscarriage and was so disappointed with the way she handled it. She told me I should have documented my cycles in a different format (even though I had written down every one to the day), was short with me on the phone when I was going through the actual miscarriage wondering if what I was feeling was normal, and then they lost my paperwork more than once when I was supposed to be getting my blood drawn. Instead of treating me with respect and sympathy, I felt like I had done something wrong -- something no one should feel when they are going through that. I would not recommend her. read more

I love Dr. Melkonian very much and she has been my Dr. since 2001. She is attentive, welcoming, and she is direct, straight to the point. Love her! I don't give 5 stars due to her office staff. Not cool. The disregard attitude is not okay at all. Women that goes there may have some bad health issue or be in pain, so be welcoming and sweet. Dr. Melkonian is welcoming and sweet, how come the office staff is not? I know when I need to go to the doctor. So, when I call to refill a prescription, do not say that I need to set up a visit in order to get it. Even if you say that, say it nicely. I am a patient for many, many years and I am not open to get this kind of treatment. Also, when I needed badly to talk to Dr. Melkonian but couldn't go physically to the office (only once in all those years), the staff did not give her the message to call me (since I called repeatedly and she was always busy). I am a former patient of Dr. Mekonian's. I really loved her for more than a decade, but then something went wrong. She was never the most punctual of doctors, and there was always this weird vibe with the side business of cosmetic surgery/dermatology stuff going on. But I overlooked it because she was really good and took time with her patients. However, about three years ago her mom stopped working in her office, and I think she was a moderating force in Dr. Melkonian's life. My 15 to 20 minute waits in the waiting room were turning into 60 to 90 minute waits. Getting hold of her office by phone was dicey at best. Finally, she started shoving me off to a nurse practitioner who has the tact and people skills of an automated telephone system. And the final straw came when, after waiting almost two hours for an appointment, I walked out (this was my THIRD attempt to see the doctor), and they looked to charge me for a missed appointment. Yeah, pretty much she's a great doctor, and she's an OKAY female urologist (a rarity, which gives her the "okay" classification). But as for the business and office management skills, just don't even bother. read more

Quite Shocking. I'm not one to usually write a bad review but this is unacceptable. Dr Rita was rude, blunt on her call back to me, and called me back three and a half months later with my pap result - which was an incorrect result on top of it all. I went to another doctor for confirmation, as I did not trust a three and a half month late result, and my new results were completely contradictory to Dr Rita's. She spoke condescendingly to me, and abashedly threw her opinion on sensitive topics around (opinions on the horrors of an IUD, when she herself promotes them in her office!). She was impersonal with me and did not even remember my basic, important information when she called me back. It was a joke. This is unprofessional. And I will quite frankly refuse to pay for a service like that. read more

The doctor refused to refund me co-pays she owed me, hung up on my insurance company when they tried to call her on my behalf, then had her receptionist call and lie to me, saying that the insurance company had told her I did indeed owe the co-pays! In order to get my money, I literally had to have the insurance company do a conference call with me and the doctor's receptionist, then fax the same claims I had already sent her to prove that she needed to refund me. I would never waste my time over so little money if I didn't feel so strongly that what she is doing is wrong and unethical. Doctors should never treat patients this way, case closed. read more

I respect her tremendously and she has never been anything but patient, caring, kind, and easy to talk to. She is an excellent listener, takes time to really find out how I'm doing, and what's going on in my life. I've had nothing but positive experiences. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Melkonian as a doctor. I don't even live in San Francisco anymore- actually I'm out of state- but still see her annually because I trust her completely. This is the "right choice";) if you don't want to see the doctor at all! Instead your appointment will be completed by the "assistant" (same copay). Very kind but unprofessional. She can even try to send you for a test to the wrong place, where your issuance doesn't cover, and even ask you to do unnecessary blood test!!! The follow up was a disaster. Impossible to reach anybody to set up and appointment. After trying several time I gave up... and after three months I had to go to the emergency room been diagnosed with something that was reported when my tests were done back then. read more

I felt I should go out of my way to write a review so that other people don't have to go through such an awful experience. Her medical billing agency, staff as well as Rita herself are not in dialogue with each other and each person I talk to says something different. Mind you this is all in regards to a three year old bill for $200.00 that they are just telling me about now. I call to try to sort through what's going on and I talk to a lady in billing who says that the bill has been dropped because it was so long ago and that I was all set. Then a few days after that I get a call on my voicemail from someone else saying that they revised my bill after talking to my insurance (mind you I have full coverage and zero copay) and that I now owed $67.00. I was pretty shocked at this point so I call the main office and the receptionist has no idea what I'm talking about but is able to actually get Rita herself on the phone so I try to tell her my experience so far and she literally tells me that everyone in the office is new and that no one knows what's going on and that I owe the full $200.00. She then becomes really rude and says they've called me before (I never got a call in 3 years) and that I didn't pay etc. I've never dealt with a more incompetent staff where there was so much confusion that no one knew what was going on. It was pretty sad because I remember she was a good doctor when I used to see her three years ago. I just think that she can't keep up with the billing side of things or she needs to hire better staff to do it; preferably people who talk to each other. read more

I visited Dr. Melkonian for an annual exam and had a horrible experience. I was very apprehensive about getting my pap test - it's an unpleasant experience for any woman. Initially, I thought the procedure went fine, but then horror ensued. Dr. Melkonian's office gave me the wrong results and claimed they did not collect enough cells. They told me I had to come in again to repeat the exam. I went to another doctor and decided to repeat the exam. However, Dr. Melkonian's office billed me for the procedure nonetheless. For months, I have been hounded by LabCorp to pay the bill for the lab tests. It turns out the test was fine but because Dr. Melkonian's office gave me the wrong results, I had to repeat the exam, experience distress and end up paying twice. I have left countless voicemails for Dr. Melkonian's office and they have been unresponsive. Please do not go to this doctor. The fact that they gave me the wrong results shows a lack of professionalism and client care. read more

I have been going to Dr. Melkonian since 1994. I have left San Francisco several times and currently do not live there. Even when I did not live in SF and to this day, I STILL go back to her for my annuals and anything else I need help with. She is my main Dr. I use Yelp often and noticed she was on here. I read the reviews. I was compelled to write one myself. Many of my friends go to Dr Melkonian also, and every one of us LOVE her. She has helped me with more than my physical health and enabled me to be proactive, and not fearful, is always caring and present during our appointments, and gives all the time one needs. Dr. Melkonian is the best. She has been my physician since 1995, including a hysterectomy and bladder surgery as well. She is extremely intelligent, up-to-date on the latest medical findings, and research and incorporates some homeopathic medicine as well. For instance, she suggested Evening Primrose oil for my daughter's issue. She always gives good counsel when I need it and helps me remember to take care of myself first. I have never had any problems with her staff - professional and hardworking. I will stay with her for as long as she is in practice! I much prefer her over other medical groups my insurance company would rather I go with. read more

Lovely doctor but ABSOLUTELY THE WORST OFFICE STAFF EVER. Forget customer service and follow up. I had to chase her "office lady" Nicole down for days, she dropped the ball constantly, and in the end when I decided to cancel the surgery and called to cancel she just said "eh ok" and didn't even bother to ask any thing further. Dr. Melkonian is a well-qualified, savvy doctor with a strong research interest, which is good. However, he should not be operating as a lone physician. Her office lacks organization and she needs to be part of a larger operation that will provide the organization she needs to run a good office. To give you an example, I was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of May of 2012. She contacted a surgeon she had worked with previously and he agreed to operate. Then, nothing. I waited two weeks to get a call saying an appointment to see him was in the works. I then called his office asking if I should make an appt. with him myself and was told that Dr. Melkonian's office had to first send a variety of materials. According to the surgeon's office, they hadn't received anything. I then called her office to ask if the materials had been sent, had to wait to hear back from them, and was told they had been sent but said they would resend them. The other office never received anything. So began the saga of the famous fax machine that supposedly worked but almost never got something where it was supposed to go. Over and over in the course of my presurgery and surgery, faxes were not received for all kinds of procedures including PT scans and CAT scans. I even watched the doctor putting the material in the machine myself. But I was assured that the machine worked! On two occasions I picked up material and drove it to where it was supposed to go. I would say that her front office would rate an "F" if being graded. Not reliable at all. No patient should have to be her own general contractor and organize her cancer surgery. Dr. Melkonian has three different offices and files are carried from one to the other. read more

Dr. Rita Melkonian may be an adequate OB/GYN however she is the most unpleasant, rude and argumentative doctor/businesswoman I have experienced. She is part of the PPO of my insurance which is why I went to her for an annual PAP checkup. Warning, she also offers urological services (as well as cosmetic) and may do unnecessary tests and bill you for them which will not be covered as an annual GYN checkup. When I called to inquire about the bill and if this was standard and covered, she became angry, said I should be grateful she did the test as she has diagnosed some women with bladder cancer (although this is not part of a standard PAP smear) and said most insurance policies don't cover urinalysis and she didn't think it was her office's duty to inform patients. The most objectionable part of my experience with Dr. Melkonian was not an unnecessary test, but rather her aggressive, rude demeanour and tone of voice yelling in response to a reasonable inquiry and stating it was the patient's ethical responsibility to make themselves aware of what insurance covers, not her responsibility. Yikes. I informed her I did not appreciate her rudeness and would not be back as a patient. read more

I couldn't disagree more with the reviews below. Dr. Melkonian is the MOST RUDE AND ARROGANT DOCTOR I HAVE EVER MET. This attitude permeates her practice and is reflected in her front office staff (especially Cynthia) who bark at patients and tells them "they are free to leave" if they don't like how long they are being made to wait. I was horrified by what I witnessed in her waiting room recently: as I was sitting in Dr. Melkonian's office (for an hour usually prior to appointments since she has zero regard for the patients' time) everyone can over-hear Dr. Melkonian talking loudly and making snarky comments about her patients in the hallway. I left after I heard this and after watching how her front office staff treated people. There are so many talented, wonderful, and respectful female GYN's in Marin, nobody should waste their time on old-shool, bad attitude practitioners like Dr. Melkonian. She has clearly been in practice way too long and has become jaded and self-righteous along the way...or more likely, it's just a reflection of her bad character and she's always been that way. read more

This doctor is hit or miss. They lost two of my urine samples (and insisted I had not left them instead of apologizing for collecting my biological material and then somehow misplacing it), and they do not stay on top of the labs for getting testing results back. Even when I call to check, there is no sense of urgency on their part. They are also not HIPAA compliant, with the receptionists providing test results over the phone with people in the waiting area while using your name. They also do not keep track of your appointments or medications, and the doctor does not communicate with the front desk, so it is your responsibility to remember everything she says (take notes!), because you will not get another opportunity to ask or clarify, and she will not remember when she sees you again (she does not look over your chart before the appointment). She also won't tell you what she is going to do before she does it. The lack of communication at this place is incredibly bad. Otherwise, the doctor is fine; she seems smart and seems to largely care about her patients, hence the two stars instead of one. read more

I have been going to Dr. Rita Melkonian for nearly 20 years. I have the absolute highest regard for her. I have not experienced a lot of "waiting" but if you must wait once you enter the waiting room, have some patience. She is very busy and, from my experience, takes as much time with a patient as is needed. And perhaps that is why you may have to wait a few minutes. She has performed two surgeries on me and both with exceptional results. Rita Melkonaian cares about her patients, and she is compassionate. She follows up and she does not take shortcuts. I recommend her without hesitation. If you're in a big rush and don't have time to wait, then see someone else who gets you in and out and just cares about the numbers who come and leave in a day's work. But if you want someone who will there for you when problems arise, then see Rita Melkonian. She will be there for you. And we are all not young forever. When I started with Dr. Melkonian all I needed was an RX for birth control. Other things happen....and you'll be happy she's there for you when they do. read more
