The tortellini in brodo was very very good. Their bavarese al nocino was a world class desert.

A great restaurant in Modena for delicious homemade pasta and regional food. We shared an anti-pasto appetizer with delicious salami, prosciutto, and cheese, the Tortelloni Vecchia Modena (spinach and ricotta filled pasta) with a tomato sauce and veal milanese in a parmesean cream. All of these dishes were fresh and light and delicious. Wine list was fine. Ambiance is excellent; service is great. A much better restaurant then Osteria Francescana. Highly recommended.

Da Danilo is one of my fondest travel/meal experiences ever! We'd read a little about the restaurant online, and decide to swing by in the afternoon to make a reservation for that evening. When my friend Georgia gave her name for the reservation, a friendly woman in the restaurant exclaimed "my name is Giorgia too!" She assured us that she'd be our waitress that night. Thank goodness she was! Giorgia took our meal at Da Danilo from a normal (delicious) meal in Italy to an evening that we all remember still. She explained everything on the menú super thoroughly, making sure to let us know what the most traditional dishes from Modena were. For wine, she recommended us a local Lambrusco that she and her girlfriends used to drink when they were younger. After some delicious pumpkin tortelloni with meat sauce (it sounded like a strange combination at the time, but the flavors were a perfect balance for each other), Giorgia brought us two typical desserts to share. They were just as delicious as the rest of the meal. We topped it off with a photo with our favorite person in Modena-- and a promise to come back to visit someday. Thank you Giorgia and everyone at Da Danilo for an unforgettable evening!

Tortellini en brodo (a Modena specialty)

Not many restaurants were open for dinner in Modena on a Monday night, but da Danilo was, and it was filled with customers. We had read that this restaurant specializes in Modenese homestyle cooking and one of the restaurants in the city worth checking out. That evening, we arrived at the restaurant without a reservation but our waitress assured us it wasn't an issue and seated us pretty promptly. We started off with half a bottle of lambrusco as that is the wine of the region and it was nice and light. Our waitress also brought us some bread which was dry and broke into little pieces as I tried to tear it apart but this seemed like this is just how Modena bread is supposed to be like from what I've seen and read in other pictures and reviews of other local restaurants. For our meal though, we ordered the tortellini en brodo to start, which was a bowl of clear broth of many pieces of little tortellini filled with minced meat, a local dish of Modena. The tortellini en brodo was tasty and perfect on this cold night. Our next dishes were the ossobucco in vegetable sauce with a side of mashed potatoes and the veal with mushrooms, ham, and asparagus. Both were deliciously made, the ossobucco was very tender but the sauce was okay. My husband enjoyed his veal but we were still hungry after all this food, as we had really worked up an appetite from our travels that day, so we got the tiramisu and chocolate cake for dessert. Overall we came to experience Modenese cuisine and got what we came for. Service was great - it was like eating at a good friend's house and the waitress was like your friend's mom. After everything we've ordered: water, half a bottle of wine, an antipasti, 2 main courses and 2 desserts, the bill only came out to 57 euros which was very, very reasonable.

We had a lovely dinner here with exceptional service. Our waitress was both efficient and entertaining. We had a carafe of the house wine which was pleasant and as expected for the price! My husband had the traditional tortellini en Brodo which was excellent! So much flavor in those little pasta packets! I had the Osso Buco with mashed potatoes which was also excellent. The meat was so tender no knife was needed. We finished with Trimasu, which was a more frozen but still delicious presentation, and local liqueur made of walnuts and "secret spices" - very strong but very good. Overall a wonderful experience.

Great local favorite. Quaint, cozy and comfortable. Very accommodating staff. We arrived way late (11:00 pm) and they went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful evening and meal. The steak was prepared just like we requested, served with an interesting balsamic vinaigrette. Get ready to enjoy a lot of vinegar if you visit this area. The Osso Bucco was excellent. The portions were perfect. But like every good restaurant in Modena in the old town, not the easiest to find.

This is a very popular restaurant in Modena which we found via yelp. There was quite a wait even for a Monday lunch in October. The waitstaff was friendly yet very busy servicing multiple tables each. We sat in the outdoor patio which was very pleasant. We each got a first and second course and dessert with wine and espresso. Our pastas were both excellent - mine was the lasagna. Both our meat dishes were ok. I wouldn't order again. Grilled fillets. Wished I had ordered something else. For dessert I had a local dessert (I can't remember the name) but it was delicious and highlight of my meal. This is a very popular place and I would also suggest asking the waiter for recommendations which I wish I had done. Would revisit and recommend.

We sat outside in the Piazza Guiseppe Mazzini. The end of May weather was perfect for outdoor dining. We tried to call and make reservations in advance but could not get through for whatever reason. So we arrived when they opened at 7:30 pm, and I'm glad we did because the restaurant filled up quite quickly. From beginning to end, the service was incredibly efficient. This restaurant operates like a well-oiled machine. To start with, I had a glass of Ferrari sparkling wine and my dining companions went with the St. Germain Spritz. All our drinks were very good. We started with the large board as an appetizer, which came with a variety of cured meats and fried gnocchi. We thought the large board was going be too much for our group of four, but we ate it quite quickly. It was the perfect amount, so don't be shy and order the bigger size if you are on the fence. The fried gnocchi was light and was such a different accompaniment for charcuterie. And the cured meats were high quality. The board was the star of the show. My dining companions ordered the lasagna, the bolognese, tortellini la crema. When I asked my dining partners how they'd rate their meals, the tortellini and the bolognese rated 8 out of 10 and the lasagna a 7. Everyone finished their plates, which speaks for itself. I ordered the Argentine filet with grilled vegetables. It was excellent -- perfectly cooked and well seasoned. We finished our meals off with some of the strongest, most concentrated espresso I've had in my life. Our visit to Una D'Oro was fabulous. I'd recommend a visit if you are looking for a dinner spot in Modena.

Determined, I returned to the city in 2017, and HG was my first call (in fact, I confirmed they were opened before booking the hotel). I love all the intrigue in entering through a secret door from inside a high-end meet and cheese shop. There are just 4 tables, so it's very intimate too. The menu is concise, and offered in English. But the food didn't "wow" me. The "dried cod cream with toast" appetizer was like hot fish dip. It was, I can't believe I'm saying this, a little gross. And it was 18€! My table of 4 was playing "hot potato" with it. The 12€ fried dumplings with cold cuts was one of the better items. Both pastas (macaroni with duck and linguini with pork cheek sauce) were enjoyed by all, but at 18€ each, were also a little shocking. The 26€ main courses were mostly fine, but again, way too expensive and too small. Nothing even worth describing in my usual exhaustive detail. Oh wait: the "fried cotechino with zabiglione sauce" was also gross. So another big strike out in the secondi to go with the hot cod dip. For a place with such a fanatical foodie following (FFF), I would have much preferred the weekday lunch at Strada Facendo (a multi course lunch for the price of a single dish here).

I was now a single girl ready to mingle, in hopes of living the life the way Aziz Ansari did in the show. Hosteria Giusti happens to be Mario Batali's favorite restaurant. It also happens to only be open for lunch and caters to the lucky diners who manage to snag one of the four tables available. Yes, you read it right; there are only a total of four tables! I booked months in advance for this lunch and couldn't wait to try it. The restaurant itself was situated below my AirBnB (if you need recommendations, just ask me!) and luckily, I didn't have to dine alone. Upon arrival, you walk into the salumeria and check in with the staff to let them know you have a lunch reservation. The place itself is magnificent, with cured meats hanging from the ceiling and condiments after condiments all situated throughout the 4oo year old store. The hostess takes you through the store to the back, walking you through the kitchen until you reach your destination. The tables are rustic and you feel you're sitting in the dining room of a cute little European cottage. You're offered water and a wine list and the menu. Then the food comes.... MY FAVORITE DISH. FRIED DUMPLING WITH COLD CUTS (€12.00). Can I just tell you how freakin amazing this dish is? The bread aka the fried dumpling was light and airy and wasn't greasy for being fried. It was easy to eat and the cold cuts were delicious! It wasn't heavy and can be shared amongst your other party. I have yet to find something similar to this dish in LA. MACARONI WITH "ZAMPONE" SAUCE AND POTATO MUSH (€18.00). I never had pasta that is paired with potato. The zampone sauce usually consists of shoulder and thigh meat as well as the pork cheek and skin. It is common and Modena and I can see why! It is delicious and flavorful. The whole pasta was cooked al dente (now I really know what al dente means). The flavor was delicious, light, and slightly rich without being overpowering. I actually enjoyed the potato at the bottom of the dish. It absorbed the sauce. I liked this dish a lot. Get it cause I have yet to find a dish similar to this in the States. PUMPKIN RAVIOLI (€18.00). I mean, how can you go wrong with ravioli? It was light and the filling was smooth. It wasn't too sweet which can often happen with pumpkin. It was filling and yet, you find yourself wanting more. This dish was a good dish and fresh for the season. SUCKLING PIG IN ROOM TEMPERATURE WITH ONION SAUCE AND AGED BALSAMIC VINEGAR (€18.00-HALF PORTION). This was my least favorite dish. I felt the suckling pig was a bit too dry for my liking. I didn't love the onion sauce. It was a tad bit overwhelming in terms of acidity. Together, the onion sauce and the suckling pig were well-balanced but it still fell short of moistness and texture. FRIED "COTECHINO" WITH ZABAGLIONE AND LAMBRUSCO (€18.00-HALF PORTION). This was my favorite main amongst the two. It wasn't what I expected. It was basically a deliciously, ground up, moist sausage that was fried and topped with a well-balanced sauce. It was crisp and the perfect size being the half portion. It wasn't overly heavy, so I appreciated that. COOKED PEARS WITH MOSCATO ZABAIONE AND TOASTED ALMONDS (€18.00). I picked this dish cause I thought it was something different. The pears were delicious and not too sweet. The portion size was a good size to be shared. I just felt that the dish wasn't amazing. It wasn't what I expected. It was a little sour and I just was hoping for something more. Overall, I can see why Hosteria Giusti is Mario Batali's favorite restaurant. It is unique and pays homage to authentic food of Modena. This was the first time I tasted what true "al dente" pasta meant. It was definitely something to get used to, but I now much prefer this mode of cooking pasta. I thought all the flavors were quite prominent at this restaurant and I loved the fact that it was intimate. They cater to you as though you're one of the family. Although I didn't love every dish at this restaurant, I thought it was a unique experience and I wouldn't mind eating at this place again. For more pics, check out thefoodseeker dot com

For our mains, we had the gnocchi with sausage and the cheese and spinach tortilini with balsamic dressing - two awesome dishes. Perfectly sized, great flavors, not overly salty. Water was only 1 euro per bottle, and coperto was 2 euro each. Our waiter spoke great English, and even put up with my dad's sad attempt to speak Italian (by attempting to pronounce the names of the dishes). I prefer the "point to the menu" method myself. Really really pleased with the quality, price, and level of service. It's a little bit hidden down a small street, but keep searching it's worth it I promise!
