What started out as a late lunch while discovering the hillside town of Peccioli. We had ducked in to pick a few pastries from the shining cold-case, and saw that there we tables open, so we said..."Wanna...?" We were so impressed with the food, the savory waffle, the steak tartar, the cheesecake and pastries. The atmosphere and loving family service made us feel like we were locals who had stopped into our regular place. We finished with a rich cup of coffee and Ferretti's famous Biscotti. Those biscotti are sooooo delicious that we had to buy a couple of containers of them for the road.... they traveled with us throughout Italy and we hoarded them for morning coffee each day. Our waiters were the sons of the owners, and they were so charming. They shared with us some of their own travels, especially in the U.S. (our home). Our advice; roam the farmers' market in the town square and, right there, stop into Pasticceria Ferretti. They even have a nice sidewalk seating area in that pedestrian only area. P.S. The town has a great parking garage with a famous modern-art foot bridge.... memorable, photogenic!

The windows open on the sea, on a nice cove with beautiful pines: this place is a small piece of paradise. And this is the perfect place to have lunch after a day at the beach or before catching a plane in Pisa. The food was excellent: for appetizer we had a calamari salad - calamari were served hot while the delicious salad, including spinach, was cold - which was amazing: i really liked the spinach and calamari together. Then I had the pasta alla vonghole which were delicately spicy and really delicious (and believe me I have developed an obsession for this dish for years now). My friend had some other type of pasta with seafood which were also excellent and a bit spicy: the sauce was completely different from mine (they know how to cook here!) but as delicious. So it will come as no surprise: I highly recommend. I cannot wait to take my car and go back there to escape the city for a day!

A quick yelp search and we found Osteria del Mare. The restaurant is small and quaint. The service is friendly and relatively quick. Some English spoken. We managed between our weak Italian and their weak English and good Spanish. It looked like every table had the mixed seafood salad as an appetizer. Check. Giant bowl of mussels, clams, langostines, and oysters. Just get it. The Shrimp gnocchi were awesome. Homemade gnocchi that were creamy with beautiful garlicy cream sauce and super fresh shrimp. The seafood stew was the show stopper though. I was expecting a whimsy bowl of soup. Instead I got no less than 3-4 lbs of super fresh mixed seafood in a spicy tomato based broth. I looked at the waiter and asked if he left anything in the ocean. He didn't speak English but laughed and handed me a bib. Haha! There may be better food in Livorno, but this town was one and done for us. In the end it was one of the best meals of our vacation.
