I've had to take a beat (read: several months) before writing this because I wanted to make sure I…read moresaid everything I needed to (and I'll probably still miss something). Don't walk. Run. Literally anywhere else with your money. Don't trust this man with anything of import in your life. I made that mistake and his failure to do his job in court and self-stated "tactical error" altered the course of my family's lives and those of four kids. We spent countless hours *ourselves* compiling and organizing evidence against the opposing party, which we dropped off to Derek's office on a flash drive with labeled files in labeled folders. Amanda (one of his paralegals) is so nice, helpful, and seems to be really good at her job. She prepared those files and made an annotated packet/spreadsheet thing for Derek to refer to during the hearing while, you know, *presenting* said evidence. Not that Derek capitalized on any of that in court...as literally none of it was presented, causing our entire case to be dismissed. Not to mention the absurd amount of money wasted. Of course, he then tries to blame it on the "high burden of proof, blah blah" which is irrelevant when you present no evidence to begin with. I saw that he just raised his rates, which is pure insanity because he wasn't worth what he was charging before. Likely needs it to cover the gaps from all the former clients he's suing (go ahead and look that up). Save yourself the money and grief and find anyone else. Hell, you'd probably get better results if you did some Google research, watched a couple episodes of Law & Order, and represented yourself.

Based on what I have read, it looks like I'm not the only one. Do NOT hire this attorney! After…read morebeing served by my ex with divorce papers and a protection order I was desperate to find help. I obviously did not do my research first! My ex cleaned out my accounts so I had no money to put down as a retainer, however, Mr. Van Gilder did accept my case and tell me that I could make payments...That's where everything went downhill and I quickly realized that I had made a huge mistake! Since I was served with a protection order, I wasn't allowed to have fire arms in my home. I told Mr. Van Gilder that I had a friend coming over THAT day to get my guns from me. He stated that "we have a large safe here in the office if you'd like to store them here." Since the protection order was about to go to court, I figured that it would look better on me if that was the case and the guns were with my lawyer. Fast forward to when the order was dropped, I emailed one of the ladies who worked there and told them I was going to stop by and pick up my guns. Come to find out, they were being held as "collateral." Once that happened, I realized that the law office of Mr. Van Gilder was only looking out for themselves and trying to make as much possible money as they could. To validate my assumption, I decided to look him up and discovered that he was given a letter of reprimand by the Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2017 for assigning himself as a recipient to a mentally ill woman's trust (https://foiadocuments.uspto.gov/oed/0924_dis_2017-08-01.pdf). After my ex had filed for divorce, the law office sent a response and then they calculated how much my child support would be. And that is the extent of what they accomplished! I ended up communicating more with my ex's attorney just to get stuff accomplished! After giving Mr. Van Gilder $500, I shortly received a bill in the mail for $7300! Needless to say, I did not pay that and am now being sued by them. So, if you want a lawyer who is all about money and doesn't care what so ever about his clients, then this is the one for you...However, I'd suggest you look elsewhere for a more ethical lawyer who actually does something for his "hard earned money"

All of them kept telling us it'll take 24-48 hours and we'd wait and get no call backs. We'd even offer to pay for consultation services if we could just talk to someone to figure out what we should do. We were having issues with our GC and needed clarification and advice on what we needed to do to resolve our conflicts. Our GC demanded we pay extra costs on our new home build (which we've never talked about, nor agreed to). We're at the 95% finish rate. We've paid all our drawers on time and basically the exterior of the home is almost done, but the GC wants to charge us another $12,000 for labor and supply we've never talked about. Throwing out fees/dues right as we are literally at the end game! So much so that they're threatening us if we don't pay, they're walking off job! Pathetic and so unfair on so many levels! Although, I wasn't able to hire Roberto to work on my case, because after talking to him and explaining what had happened and the legal avenues we could take, in the end, we'd end up paying so much more than $12,000. It's sad that we have to pay our hard earned money to a pathetic -and conniving General Contractor. I will say, for Roberto to pick up and actually spend 20 mins to advise to us about what we should and shouldn't, do, is just awesome. He didn't hesitate to help , listen to our issues, and the key thing is, he actually cared enough to help and advise. I can tell his customer service is great, because he picked up his phone automatically and actually wants to help people! I believe he would make a great lawyer and his number is stored in my phone if and when I do need one. Or if someone needs recommendations for a good lawyer! Thank you Roberto for taking the time to talk to my husband and I today! We truly appreciate your kindness!

Roberto was extremely helpful in bringing us up to speed on the legal process. He also provided excellent legal advice assessing the merits of both sides of the case, which helped us a lot in understanding the probability of a favorable outcome if things went to mediation or to court. Ultimately, his advice was critical in us having confidence in standing our ground and reaching a favorable outcome. The legal advice was worth 5 stars, and his fees are very reasonable. Unfortunately, I also have to deduct 1 star because Roberto missed a couple of calls that I had scheduled with him, so it wasn't a flawless experience working with him. Perhaps it was a crazy busy week, and sometimes busy attorneys do get stuck in court or some other higher priority meeting. In those cases, it would have been better to get a text message or some communication from his office. However, I had to call his office both times to find out what was going on and reschedule. That being said, I would absolutely recommend Roberto to others and would definitely turn to him for legal advice in the future if needed.
