Of the dishes I've had: champurrado (yum, except not securely packaged for delivery); chips & salsa (the salsa did not agree with my tummy); sopes carnitas (pork chunks were more fat than meat); tacos fritos de pollo (super dry despite the salad that's lauered on top -- needs sauce!), and the baleadas, my favourite is the baleadas sencillas (good portion, nice flavour, perfect texture).

Freezing, I walked along 11th street on a Tuesday evening searching for Benito's Place. An old…read morefriend had suggested it but..I couldn't find it. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.

El Rancho (that occupied this…read morelocation previously) was one of my favorite spots for Peruvian and Latin American food, so I was saddened when it closed. Well, I'm happy to say that Hundu Pollo is a worthy replacement...at least with this first visit. Reviewing the diverse menu of Honduran and Peruvian items, at first I was going to play it safe, but I decided, let's see what they can do. I'm picky with Yuca as it is usually too dry, and I'm even pickier with Chicharron as it tends to be too dry, overfried, cold, or some mix of the three. That was not the case here. Although not obvious at first, there was a LOT of large, chunky Chicharron under the slaw and sauce. And, the sauce soaked into the Yuca just enough to be perfectly balanced and not dry at all. This place is not only delicious, it is a bargain for the amount of food that you get. I could barely finish half of the platter myself, and there's no way I have room for the chicken empanada I got with my order. I will be back...many times! Check them out!

Inside the restaurant it is very tight so we got lucky that it wasn't busy when we went. I love that they do play Spanish Cristian music. I do admire that the wall was filled with pictures of places in Honduras so I took it all in. It is quite a long wait to order food even when the place is half empty. We asked the young lady to have the meal in the restaurant but 25 min later she came with our meals in a to go box. She offered to put in on a plate but then went around the cash register and placed the bagged food on the table where we were sitting, not what we were expecting. Absolutely no complaints on the food as they were generous portions of the carne asada, so much that I even had my friend help me finish it , but not enough of the "adereso" sauce that they put on the tajadas so it was dry, however the tajadas were soft, blandito. It came with avocado, two big blocks of queso blando, two tortillas, and refried beans (those were super dry so I did not enjoy it). My friend said he enjoyed the pollo con tajadas because it was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

I've only been past 10PM though (I went around 8pm on a Sunday - this scenario still applies!), I'm sure sunny hours have a calmer atmosphere! Anyways! Enter the spot that has bachata blasting and laser lights tripping you out, then make your way towards the bar to order your food. I alwaysssssss get the carne asada tacos. The beef is always juicy and mouth watering! I tried some of my friend's chicken tacos - they were great too. The food always takes about 15-20 minutes to be ready and we always order to go, but the takeout box still comes with a scoop of (buttery) white rice and generous portions of guac, sour cream, and pico de gallo. I will seriously not talk when eating their tacos, it's that serious. They're so perf. I will always come here for late night tacos if I'm around the way. Next time I'll be ordering their horchata...

The margaritas are so good, you need to be careful not to drink them too fast haha. My favorites were the peach margarita and the tamarindo one. However, the mint and cucumber one was super refreshing, and if you're feeling adventurous I recommend trying one of the jalapeño ones! It is spicy though. My friend couldn't handle it and that's why I ended up drinking it. It was really good! The ambience is great too. The owner personally greats everyone when he's there, the waiters are really friendly and make sure to check in regularly to make sure you have everything you need! Overall, the place is great for a laid back lunch or evening, with yummy food and drinks! I hear they have karaoke nights too. Not sure when... I'll definitely have to try it out. Fully recommend!
