We took a beautiful afternoon tour along the Housatonic River our first day at the Berkshires for the week and what a great start it was. We got to learn and see how the beavers create their dams and mud piles, as well as see turtles that were hanging out on the tree limbs along our way. Hillary was also gracious enough to provide cold bottled waters and while apples to snack on, which was a nice pick me up! Though the tour was only supposed to be 2hrs it went a little over about 45min and we didn't feel rushed at all as the current was sort of strong and since my husband and I had shared a canoe, we had to coordinate quite a bit - especially going back to shore. Overall I would recommend this tour to my family and friends and really appreciate the kindness and bubbly attitude these two ladies had I share. Thank you!

Gave us waterproof packs for our phones and valuables, cold water bottles, and apples (which are great snack on the river). You can tailor the tour for the length you prefer, and Hilary gives you basics and tips for rowing. This is a long historic slow flowing river and perfect for our first kyack tour. Lots of interesting habitats, flowering plant life, and animals (fish, painted turtles basking, beavers on shore). Went in July and no mosquitos or blackflies. I would like to go back for the evening tour to observe the beaver families in action.

This was EASILY the best thing I've ever done!…read more Same thing I did in Puerto Rico, I couldn't decide which company to go with so I called several and first one who answered got my business. I'm glad it was Costa Sol Rafting. Make sure you book at least a day in advance, a week or 2 during busy season. They will pick you up so don't bother driving. We were at a Hostel in San Jose. First of all. I don't care what anyone says. Our guides Jorge and Ronnie kept us alive. 3 out of the 6 of us fell out of the boat during our 1st class 4 rapids. I was lucky enough to have stayed on the boat so I was privileged to see Jorge and Ronnie work under pressure. They were absolute experts while shouting commands at those in the water and at us in the boat. We all made it out! Sounds scary? Look people. You're white water rafting class 1 to 4 rapids. So don't complain how dangerous it is. Go to the rivers that offer only cute class ones if class 4 is not your thing. If my rescue story isn't enough reason to choose Costa Sol Rafting, not sure what you're looking for. All the companies raft the same Pacuare River. BUY THE DISK!!! Check out my pics. Your camera or Gopro will not duplicate the skills of Ronnie. He was an amazing camera man! He also did barrel rolls in his kayak. Such a beast. Oh and they feed you before AND after! Yay! Both restaurants were delish. Thank you Jorge! Thank you Ronnie! Thank you Costa Sol Rafting! PURA VIDA!

Zoar Outdoor…read moreis located on route 2 in Western MA directly across the street from the Deerfield River. Very beautiful area. After a brief safety video and briefing, we were given our rafting kit, loaded on buses, and brought up river to the raft slip, this was about a 30 minute trip north west. The raft trip ended across the street from where we started. An easy exit, we got out of the boat, returned our kit, and walked across the road to watch the video, and purchase souvenir photographs. We had an excellent day on the river during our 10 mile trip. My 14 year old son and I did the Zoar Gap trip which took most of the day with an hour break for lunch at a nice riverside picnic ground in the mountains. You can bring your own food( appropriately packaged) if you would like. They store it in a water proof bag and stow it on the raft. If there is even a hint of rain or you just don't want to get completely soaked, bring a three season jacket or rain coat. Also, you will be out on a river dress accordingly. NO open toed shoes! This includes flip- flops. You can rent shoes and wetsuits. If you have any medical issues like allergic reactions etc. I would either bring your own Epi Pen kit and medications with you, and stow it in the water proof bag, or possibly think about finding a less isolated outdoor experience. Be warned, white water rafting can be physically strenuous. The only issue I had was the lunch that was provided. Not that it was bad, it was well packaged and pre-made( not to order). If you have food allergies or don't like mayonnaise bring your own food. Zoar Outdoor is not really able to accommodate food allergies or pickey eaters. Mayonnaise was on every sandwich. I don't know why. They could just have provided packets on the side but they there were none available. My son hates mayonnaise so he only ate the chips, pickle, and cookies provided which got him through the remainder of the trip but not exactly a great lunch. One man we were with had a dairy allergy. I'm pretty sure he was not able to eat any of the food. I'm not sure why he didn't make sure a head of time if he could eat the food.I wish I had known the sandwiches had mayonnaise on them a head of time. Not a huge deal, we got over it. The trip was super fun! I would love to go again and will definitely choose Zoar Outdoor again.

Easily more than five stars. Ten stars. A billion stars. A galaxy of stars and supernovas and quasars rotating in a vast and endless universe. You get the idea. This company is awesome. Jennifer the owner has staffed her company with the most incredibly friendly, down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. Our guide, Charlotte, was fantastic. Wise beyond her years, professional, knowledgeable, easy to talk to on the stretches of lazy river in between rapids, and an inspiring, true leader. We did the Deerfield River Fife Brook section in Massachusetts, which was about ten miles (normally 7) and two hours. The minimum age is 8 with most rapids being class 2 and one class 3, so it's good for beginners and/or kids. All of the staff are great with kids. My son is 9 and had a great time. They also offer the Monroe Bridge section with mostly class 3 and 4's which has a minimum age 15. The cost also includes a meal afterwards, and I had the salmon with salad, noodles and cornbread. Delicious and the perfect way to end the day. Can't recommend this place enough, and hope to see their other locations someday as well.
