If you glance away momentarily - you'll miss the sign and entrance for his place. It's the same entrance for "Framing by Cyndy." You go through the door and descend a stairway - Black Horse Gallery is to the left right before the entrance to "Framing by Cyndy." I met the gentleman running the place - very nice man. I probably never would have found INés if it weren't for the sign pointing down an alley telling us to "follow the yellow brick road," so, of course, we did! At the end was this quaint, eclectic little shop filled with all kinds of interesting finds. They also had real gold and silver jewelry, including 14k gold pieces. I found a few amethyst rings I liked, including one where the stone hadn't even been set yet. I loved the ring itself, and INés, who I believe is the owner, took it upon herself to set the stone for me right then and there! She clearly knows her way around jewelry and has a little workshop area with different stones and settings. Watching her put my ring together right in front of me made it feel even more special, and I really appreciated the personal touch. Before I left, she even wrote her number on a card for me in case I ever needed to reach out or found myself back in town, which was such a thoughtful gesture. They also take cards and tap-to-pay, which was convenient. I was only in Culpeper for the day, but this was such a pleasant surprise. Inés made me feel very welcome, and I would absolutely stop in again if I'm ever back in town. Thank you, INés, for the beautiful ring and your wonderful little shop. This place is truly a hidden gem, literally and figuratively!

Although not big, it is stuffed with very intrinsic, different, and distinctive items. If it were not for their sidewalk sign on the street, one would not even think of walking down this 19th century, narrow and somewhat foreboding alleyway! But once entering their door at the very end, fascinating!

Claims she had several people wanting to purchase this bracelet but she would sell it to me because I lived close by and she wouldn't want the people lined up on the streets waiting to get in. I bought the bracelet from her. Upon taking the bracelet from Lynn into another jewelry store I was told that they could feel it wasn't real gold as soon as they picked up. Upon doing several test on the bracelet, it turned out to be fake. My understanding is that any time a piece of jewelry is stamped, that means it is the real deal and it is the responsibility of the person selling it next to determine its true quality. The value would have been great, had the chain been made of the true metal as stamped.

When we went inside, there was a lot to see. There are booths where different vendors sell their treasures. We didn't really see much that we were interested in unfortunately. That's pretty unusual for us. The staff also wasn't particularly friendly. No one said anything to us when we walked in and the desk is at the door. That's also unusual. I felt a little underwhelmed but hopefully a visit in will be more promising for someone else.

Varying caliber of art, but that's also maybe to be expected and somewhat in the eye of the beholder. We spent two-day getaway in Sperryville, which we normally visit with the kids, as a couple and thus we got a chance to visit some of the art galleries that we normally don't even really try to visit with kids. This one is where we wound up actually buying something. The space is small, but interesting with a variety of different art ranging from carved gourds, to ceramics, to photos, to furniture, to paintings. When it comes to paintings, Haley Fine Art, which is closer to downtown actually did a better overall job, but we wound up falling in love with a photo/painting of a crow staring into an old SLR on a pile of books. It just had a ton of character, was edgy enough to be interesting, but plain enough to be able to go with almost anything else. For better or for worse, some of the art here just didn't inspire. We came in part because we love birds and woodpeckers and there were some ceramics with woodpeckers on them that looked interesting online, but they weren't as impressive in person. They didn't quite match the real woodpeckers either in a photo-realistic or abstract way. It's possible some art just isn't for us, but it's also possible that some art just isn't that great. Still there was clearly enough that we wound up finding and liking some things.
