I eat all over the country and this is just real, real, real. The Mexican rice has nopales chopped up in it. You can taste the lard in the beans (rich and wonderful, not greasy). My physique…read morehas been shaped by a multitude of amazing dishes and a plethora of calories from across the globe, but I hate a particular fondness for Mexican food. When I went to this restaurant, I knew right away I had found a treasure. Hidden deep on the west side of south bend, a few blocks off of western avenue, this restaurant is one you've got to set out to find. When you park and walk inside, the vibe goes from rustbelt west side hood, to familiar Mexican / Salvadoran charm. Clean tables fill two large dining areas and a cash register, just in front of the kitchen, is about all you see to realize you're in an actual restaurant. The servers are quick and attentive (and cute!) and when I ate there, rather than being handed a menu, I was told "here's what we've got.." which is typical of many of the more traditional Comida Corrida spots in Mexico. I ordered pozole and it was the best I've had in years. It came piping hot with all of the sides. My little kid got a simple quesadilla and it was enormous. As we ate a man set up a speaker and began singing karaoke style in Spanish and taking requests from the various tables. I ate on a Sunday and it was packed. I was the only gringo in sight. I could go on and on...but I'm gonna go try one of their pupusas to see how they fare. Eat here. It is amazing.

The place has a large interior but was pretty quiet when I visited. They also have an extensive menu of Mexican cuisine. I ordered the taco dinner which allows you to choose different types of taco meats. All of the meat was well seasoned and packed with incredible depth of flavor. I really enjoyed the Al pastor and steak. The plate of tacos was tremendous, and it came with a side of rice and beans. For the price, the meal was amazing value and very filling. Moreover, our waitress was attentive and gave my group some great recommendations on what to order. She was very friendly and checked on my table often. Los Humildes is an underrated Mexican restaurant and definitely worth visiting if you're in South Bend. They have generous portions, nice atmosphere, and flavorful food!

Let me just say... this place clears that bar with room to spare! Honestly, it might be the best Mexican food I've had outside of California. The salsa alone deserves its own review. Fresh, bold, just the right amount of kick it's the kind of salsa you keep dipping into even after you're "done eating." The carne asada? Perfectly seasoned, juicy, and full of flavor that takes me right back home. The chile relleno is everything it should be: cheesy, smoky, and comforting, while the enchiladas are packed with flavor and smothered in the kind of sauce that makes you want to lick the plate clean. On top of the food, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff makes you feel like family. This isn't just good "for the Midwest" it's genuinely amazing Mexican food, period. If you're craving the real deal, this is the spot.
