We took our two children there for the first photo session after purchasing a Groupon. The location was easy to find, there was plenty of parking, and the studio was quiet and comfortable. Rick was very friendly, easy-going and accommodating from the very beginning, and made the children feel right at home. He has a great sense of humor and really knows how to work with and talk with children. He struck the right tone and pace for the kids to feel relaxed and comfortable, and most importantly, to be themselves; all this was evident in the beautiful photographs he took! He took about 110 poses for our two kids in 35 minutes and was able to catch our children in numerous natural shots. Afterward we spent more than an hour choosing and editing the pictures. He was really good in helping us choose the right pictures with the right digital effects. One example was when he was able to take two beautiful photos of the kids, and then with the right cropping and black and white composition, made them into something even more beautiful and artsy. While we were choosing the photos we liked best, he offered his honest and professional opinion but did not impose them upon us. We ended up buying some BEAUTIFUL photos from him that we are excited and proud to display in our home for all to see. My fiance and I needed some engagement photos and decided to purchase a Groupon. This Groupon deal included two 1-hour sessions and two 11X14 photos. I've purchased a few Groupon deals in the past and typically, when you're using a deal as good as the ones you find on Groupon, you're treated like a second-class citizen who is using a coupon...not in the case of working with Rick Bern. His personality was very relaxed (even being patient with our small dog, Simba, that we brought along with us for some "family" portraits). Rick wasn't rushed, allowed us to choose different pairings for photos, me and my fiance, me and Simba, Simba alone...it was great. I've never seen anyone so patient while trying to photograph a 4-lb dog that refuses to pay attention or react to any kind of squeaky sound or dog treat, and believe it or not, Rick got some amazing photos, even while Simba was being so difficult! By the time it came to reviewing the photos of the day and deciding which ones to purchase, we were amazed with all of the photos we had to take quite a few with us! We hired Rick to shoot our wedding in Middletown this summer. He was immediately really pleasant to interact with via email. After seeing the photos from his website we were sold, we were not disappointed. Rick's photos are incredible. He is a star. We have been over them three times now and each time we discover something new and marvelous. It's quite something how well he managed to capture people's essence, you have to see it to believe it. For too long our company (CloudLock) got by with whatever we could crop from a cell phone photo. But when we started doing high-profile speaking gigs and events, we decided we needed something a lot more professional when it came to headshots. I went in to get my model/headshot picture done and am more than pleased that I chose Rick Bern. From beginning to end I felt 100% comfortable and loved the overall atmosphere he had in there. He is also very good at connecting with his subjects. Throughout the shoot there was not one dull moment or any point in time that we weren't diligently trying to improve on our techniques or simply joking around to stay loose and relaxed. He gave me great direction throughout the shoot so I had a good sense of what would look best on camera and as a finished product. We were first exposed to Rick's work when our friends showed us their engagement photos. We were so impressed that when Rick shot our friend's wedding on the Cape, we asked him to do our engagement pictures. We met on a beach at 7am to catch the morning sunlight. Ever since I took my wedding photos, I was a life-long photo phobic. My very first words to Rick were a myriad of excuses: "I hate having pictures taken! I never look good! My eyes are usually closed! I don't know how to smile! Rick assured me that I would be an excellent subject and I should trust in him. Within just a few minutes he began snapping away. We have had two sessions with Rick and could not be more pleased with our experiences. During our first session, our then 17 month old daughter was irritable and elusive. Rick was amazing! Just got my daughters Bat-mitzvah album. Wow!!!! It absolutely blew away my expectations.
