That, combined with the florists Miss Bloomsbury which also inhabits the station building mean that Lewes station is fairly well-equipped to provide you with some last minute presents - providing you need them before 5.30pm. The woman who runs the Station Bookshop is quite grumpy, but I'm not surprised because the low neon lighting in the shop is rather depressing. Basically, it's not lovely, but is useful if you want some water or a paper before you hop on a train.

Plus, I pulled out a shirt that I quite like the look of, to find that it was stained all down the front and still cost £6.50. What's more, there were a couple of dresses in there going for £25. In my opinion that is too much, even if they are quite nice.

It's a relatively small shop, but they have a very good concentration of lady's clothes, accessories and home ware. I had entered my mobile number incorrectly online and despite me providing a correction to this to the Southwick store just days before, the warning call went to someone else's voicemail! I paid to have my old appliance removed by them and their website states that the appliance must be empty and ready for removal. Hence my food was defrosting by the time I chased them. Instead of being offered help, I was told the correct model would be with me in 5-7 days and that I should never have taken my food out of the appliance! Due to my insistence I was loaned an emergency model. It was too big for my kitchen. The final insult was my laminate flooring being soaked as they took the old one away without checking the reservoir! Their leaflet and website states: "Shop at Carters and you are guaranteed to get a good deal" I was not offered any compensation for the poor experience and food that had to be discarded, and I could have got the appliance quicker and cheaper in the end through a local branch of a well known mail order store.

It's quite a large shop, and so has the floor space to stock equipment for a wide range of different sports, and not only that but to stock a wide range of equipment for each sport - there is an entire wall devoted to cricket bats for example. They even have a bike shop at the back. Alongside equipment such as racquets, balls, bats, and so on, they also stock sportswear and trainers, and a few kids items like toboggans and mini-scooters. The staff were very friendly, and it seem like if they didn't have anything in stock they would be happy to order it in for you. I'm not a sporty person, but this shop is a great resource for local sports enthusiasts of different stripes.

To my delight, they not only had pen and paper, but in a good deal of variety too, with a mix of pencils and large notebooks sitting alongside ball points and 100% recycled jotters. Fantastic! And the range of bits and pieces isn't limited to stationary either, with plenty of random goods on offer. They also have the standard array of soft drinks and snacks too, and a well stocked set of alcohol shelves. There's a good selection of corner shops on North Street, but this is the one for me, seeing as they saved me so royally that evening.
