Those of you that personally know me already know I love writing reviews. However, I rarely write…read morereviews on schools and universities. However, for many reading this have probably watched (let alone heard of) the hit FOX TV drama "Beverly Hills 90210" that aired from 1990-2000. This takes me to "Torrance High School"; you heard that right, the school grounds were actually filmed in Torrance and not in Beverly Hills. And for those wondering, this was also the filming location of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" amongst other various TV shows and movies due to its close proximity to Hollywood. Since I was in this area for a private family event, this was not out of the way for my lady and I. The actual location of this school is at 2200 W. Carson St. in Torrance that happens to be in a relatively quiet and less congested area. It is tucked in between Crenshaw Blvd. and Western Ave. while the major freeways (the 405 and 110) are about a 5-7 minute drive away. Since we visited the school campus in the summer (on Friday 7/26/2024) as well as after hours (at around 6:30pm), there were no classes in session. I must confess, after watching the show, the campus has not changed much over the years and am guessing that the entire structure of the buildings have remain intact ever since being constructed back in the mid-late 1940's. I also had the opportunity to peek through the windows of some of the classrooms and I can tell they've kept a lot of the same desks intact for several decades. Finally, the outside courtyard area looks exactly the same as where the kids from 90210 once stood during their recess. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with checking out "Torrance High School". The layout of the entire campus is quite large as the school can accommodate an average of 2,000 students during a normal school year (grades 9-12). And to all of you Gen-X'ers that were obsessed with this show, you will definitely not be disappointed. Just don't visit during when school is in session. Otherwise, I highly recommend checking this place out. My rating, an above average four stars.

Review #980 2026-046…read more Let me preface that this review is for an event that was held at J.H. Hull Middle School... J.H. Hull Middle School is 1 of 8 middle schools serving students in grades 6 - 8 in Torrance Unified School District. It's named after the 1st TUSD superintendent, Dr. John Henrich Hull, who served as superintendent from 1947 - 1970... at which time TUSD grew from 4 to 41 schools. Opened in 1970, JHHMS was originally built using steel portables from defunct Madison School, which closed in 1969; the school was later rebuilt & reopened in Fall of 2011, & is currently the district's most technologically wired & environmentally efficient campus. For 2025 - 2026, the school is helmed by Principal Jackie Ryan & supported by Assistant Principal Kimberly Lee. The 2026 TUSD "Math Field Day" was held at J.H. Hull Middle School, hosting the past 3 years. It's an annual competition that focuses on computational skills, conceptual understanding, & complex problem-solving while encouraging teamwork amongst elementary (starting from 4th grade), middle, & high schools students. Winners received medals & trophies for their school, & top winners from each quadrant advance to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Math Field Day, usually held in April. My son competed for 1 of 4 spots representing Hickory Elementary's 4th Grade Team. It's a 2-part competition that consisted of an individual 10 question quiz (20-mins.), followed by a break, then a series of questions for the team (30-mins.), ending with an hour break while the scores are tabulated. The students loved the "trail mix" snacks that they got during breaks... my son says it was candy galore with trail mix, gummy bears, popcorn, M&Ms, chocolate chips, goldfish crackers, etc.!! And totally worth the after school hours to enjoy these treats (can you feel the eyes rolling?) & wants to come back next year. O_o 2026 Math Field Day Winners 4th Grade: 1st: Victor ES 2nd: Hickory ES (so proud of my l'il guy & his teammates!) 3rd: Riviera ES 5th Grade: 1st: Hickory ES (back-to-back win!) 2nd: Walteria ES 3rd: Towers ES 6th Grade: 1st: Richardson MS 2nd: Madrona MS 3rd: Calle Mayor MS 7th Grade: 1st: Magruder MS 2nd: Bert Lynn MS 3rd: Madrona MS 8th Grade: 1st: Magruder MS 2nd: Madrona MS 3rd: Calle Mayor MS High School: 1st: West HS 2nd: North HS 4th: Victor ES, 5th: Hickory ES, 6th: Richardson MS, 7th: Magruder MS, 8th: Magruder MS, & West HS will move onto LACOE Math Field Day. Review #995 2026-065…read more Let me preface that this review is for an event that was held at/hosted by South High School. Opened (3rd) in 1957, South High School is 1 of 4 high schools serving students in grades 9 - 12 in Torrance Unified School District; according to their website, they're the #1 ranked high school in TUSD. The school also rents its space to Asahi Gakuen, a weekend non-profit Japanese language school. Did you know "American Beauty" was filmed at South High School during 1998 - 1999 winter break? For 2025 - 2026, the school is helmed by Principal Jim Evans & supported by Assistant Principal Dr. Tera Black. The 2026 TUSD "Academic Pentathlon" was held at South High School, hosting since post pandemic. It's an annual academic competition for 4th - 5th grade students that tests their knowledge on multiple (5) subjects: math, science, social science, art, literature. Winners receive medals & trophies for their school. Unlike Math Field Day, there's no county (LACOE) competition since it's primarily for middle school students. My son competed for 1 of 4 spots representing Hickory Elementary's 4th Grade Team. The hour-long competition consisted of 2 teams of 4 (comprised of 2 4th grade & 5th grade students) for their school to answer 50 questions; it was announced at the end that there were 49 questions due to an error. There was a short break at the midpoint of the competition, & another at the end while the scores are tabulated. The school's score is the calculated mean of their 2 teams. Unlike Math Field Day, there's no "trail mix" snacks offered during breaks so we gave M a quickie snack at home before the competition, & added a granola bar in case he needed a little lift. The auditorium wasn't as packed with competitors... I think maybe 1/2 of TUSD's elementary schools participated? Though it was standing room only with all the parents & families out to support their children. 2026 Academic Pentathlon Winners 1st: Victor ES (40.5 points) 2nd: Hickory ES (38 points; so proud of my l'il guy & his teammates!) 3rd: Towers ES (35 points) No back-to-back wins for Hickory ES (placed 1st in 2025)... M plans to come back next year to help regain the honors before he graduates. =D Congrats to all the lifelong learners... great job!!

The people working there were so nice and patient with all 4 showings. It was put on by Anchorless Productions and the Friendship foundation. First, parking is so easy right in front to the theater. The theater itself is beautiful and spotless. It is comfortable and seating is easy. They are great with disabled people and are just super nice. They have it all, from the cool curtain to a super sound system. We were so lucky to be able to use this venue for the play. Before the play we walked around just a little bit, a lot of it was locked as it was a weekend, but the football field is so pretty and there is a tennis area. I think this school does a lot of performing arts. I wish all schools looked like this.

She would tell students to raise their hand if they needed help, but when I actually did and asked questions, she would get irritated and tell me to "figure it out myself." There was even a time I got frustrated and quietly said to classmates, "What's the point of asking for help if she won't help me?" and she came up to me and embarrassed me in front of the entire class. That situation made me feel humiliated and genuinely affected me emotionally. No student should feel scared to ask for help in a classroom. A teacher should support students who are struggling, not shame them for it. I'm also still in contact with staff from West High, and I've heard similar concerns over the years about her behavior and lack of patience. It's disappointing that this seems to be an ongoing issue.

From the moment we stepped onto the Ambassador campus it felt like home with a caring family like atmosphere. The entire staff are all engaging and helpful. Our student did a tour and liked it, then did a shadow day and decided it was the right school for him. Ambassador has so much to offer. Firstly, a Christ centered approach to education with patience and mentorship. Many opportunities to be a servent of God in the community to help others. Second, outstanding academic classes with teachers who really care and support the students. AP and College prep is included in the affordable tuition fee with a wide variety of subject matter to choose from. Wonderful Guidance Counselors who truly walks the students entirely through the College application process from freshman year to senior year. Third, competitive sports in CIF leagues are offered with compassionate coaching that really guides the student to excel in their sport. Ambassador has been a dream come true for our student and our family. With smaller class sizes and more personalized attention by the teachers and staff, each student truly finds their way and earns the confidence to excel in their studies. The students also all seem so happy and they all are so welcoming and kind. Ambassador is truly a great Christ centered culture and wonderful family atmosphere that welcomes family involvment. Ambassador has been the answer to our prayers for our student. We cannot reccommend them enough.

However, where SBCS leaves other schools in the dust is what they manage to achieve OUTSIDE the classroom. Class size allows the faculty to focus on EVERY student and their needs. No one gets lost in the crowd. That means if your child is dealing with any issues, they'll be noticed and get the attention they should get. This school is all about teaching to the whole individual. Learning to handle responsibilities, conflict, impulse control--the faculty have it under control. If you don't just want your child to grow up a competent math student, then this is where they should go to school. They'll learn how to be moral, caring, thoughtful, and self-aware people (who are also good at math or English or ...!). They've also had a new principal for two years now, Kirstin Born, who taught for twenty-five years before assuming the top position. You couldn't ask for a more savvy, sensitive, experienced person to guide the school. She bends over backwards to meet the needs and requests of her students' families. You won't complain about crickets if you approach Mrs. Born with any concerns. SBCS is great for any student, but it is a gift to students who need extra attention and personalized care in the hands of loving, experienced teachers and administrators.

Staff there including the principal at the time useless and did nothing and even said my daughter being physically pushed "is not bullying." We did everything to get help contacted school police and all they did was come down and talk to the same culprits over and over and it continued. They even had video proof of the student that started physical altercation towards my child during PE and also outside of school this group having "fight meet ups". NOTHING EVER DONE. Some of those same students went onto Torrance high and continued their actions and the school their had issues with them. The best thing I did for my daughter was remove her form this juvenile hall and got her a real education (online is the way to go!) She not only received better help with her education (she has an IEP) both elementary school Fern, and Madrona didn't help her at all even with their iep programs) why? Simple many teachers there general ed teachers don't have the professional qualifications to understand how to work with children like this instead they get angry and put down a child (yes it happened many times to my daughter throughout her time at both schools) And they are lazy. Teacher at elementary Fern would hand her a book put her in a corner and have her stare at a book for the entire class session. Madrona just blamed her for having dyslexia! My daughter beautiful and now well accomplished all A's and B's online high school, went onto college and professors adore her and will be recommending her to universities that specialize in History academics her major. She reads beautifully and way above her grade level and would love to be a professor or museum curator or librarian. She also hopes to help other children that struggle with learning difficulties. She firsthand knows what to look for and how to address it properly and kindly in a positive manner. She's a wonderful mannered and hard working young lady and guess what? The other group hmm well guess but you know the saying some things never leave a small town or achieve much.
